Hi!
Hi!
Hi, I'm SirMalice. Or Zak, that works too.
I haven't roleplayed - online or otherwise - before, so I'm not sure how well this has been going. I'm sure someone will tell me at some point. I've been on for a day or two and enjoying myself a lot, but my timezone (New Zealand) really seems to be a bit of a disadvantage. Oh well. At this stage I think the quality of the server is high enough to warrant staying regardless. Speaking of which, I'm really impressed with the friendliness and competency of the people I've met so far. Which is three people. That's still 3/3, though.
A couple of questions, though. One of which involves me breaking town in tears because I can't play. That was hyperbole, by the way, I wouldn't really break down in tears.
a. How many liberties can one take in choosing character history? Can one decide they're from a fallen Noble House in some city in the distance, or is that too presumptous? I'm thinking the former, but I'd like to make sure.
b. As for liberties, how many can one take in a roleplay? If, say, one wanted to build a Golem to stand watch at a faction base, would one simply go and start doing what they think would make sense, or is that too far and in actual fact, golems aren't okay?
c. "cear-tc-styleos-tmp.trx has been downloaded successfully, but it can't be verified. Please contact the server administrator at..." That's what happens when I try to join, starting last night. I did plenty of Googling and forum searching. It's clearly not the server's fault because other people are playing. If this information is already on the forum, please ignore this question so I can sit here feeling silly for a while.

Re: Hi!
Welcome to the Server!
a. it's best to avoid claiming nobility, although it's been done. but do not grant your character any sort of title or honorific, those that have them have been earned in-game. every player only roleplays their own character and every character starts at level one with the same (which is to say, zero) resources, so it'd be best to avoid a background that would imply off-character-sheet powers or resources (connections to the royal family, fabulous wealth, NPCs under your command, etc.). a 'fallen' house would work better under that premise, but some research on varanite and dasarian fictional history would help, even if you intend to create something new.
b. actually, golems can be created... perhaps a good way to engage existing players and to introduce your character might be inquiring of them what might be involved in such a feat.
i think the answer to your question the way it was asked is probably embedded in my response to a) above though, it's really not sporting to pretend you have resources to which you don't actually have access. you are however, free to say anything you want in RP, including claims to golem ownership, however other characters might think you're crazy. the thing about RP is you can't real force anything on another player, everybody always has the freedom to dictate what their own character does, thinks, or feels about what another player's (nonhostile) character is doing. if you were to say something like that, you might even wish to throw in a bluff roll against them, to give them a chance to decide whether their character is convinced of the story or not and to play along with you.
c. try restarting your client before re-connecting. terrain and custom content files update from time to time but they can't do so properly if the client has a filesystem lock on them, which can happen.

I think maybe I phrased the question badly: wasn't trying to imply a character might just have a golem from the get-go, merely whether or not adopting such a goal was okay. Doesn't matter, though, since you answered what I needed anyway. : )
As for the client, I still can't get in. I guess I'll list the things I've tried so far:
- Restarted client
- Turned off/restarted system
- Deleting offending files (Result is they are redownloaded and still won't verify)
- Ensured both override folders are empty
If anyone has any ideas for how I might fix these, please give me a shout. I seem to be the only person on this plane of existence who has the problem so Google is still fresh out of ideas.
Edit: Turns out that the file 'cear-tc-styleos-tmp.trx.lzma' is being downloaded from the server, but the file 'cear-tc-styleos-tmp.trx' is now being unpacked. I tried unpacking it manually into the appropriate folder using 7Zip, but the autodownloader deleted that for me and put back the unpacked version. This website (http://nwnhaven.com/forums/problem-loading-haven) has someone with a similar (identical) problem on a different server. Apparantly recieving the file from somebody else would fix my problem, but possibly only temporarily and possibly only for one file. Obviously it isn't feasible for anyone to send me huge amounts of files regularly. There is a possibility that the file is being cached somewhere and it's mine or my ISP's fault. I hope this isn't the case.
That's about all the information I can give. Help please? : (
Edit: On the other hand, another source suggests it's all good and I just have to wait a bit. I'm having a nap.
Edit: It works now. I don't know if it's because the server restarted, I did a full reboot or because I cleared my cache. Alas.
