Questions on Varana (the city) and Varanites

If possible would like a few pointers as to the nature of Varana and the personality of Varanites. Any links to previous discussions would be great too.

My main character Rose Thorn is a native of the city of Varana.

I am roleplaying that she grew to hate the city as it made her both physically and also mentally ill (depressed). I am presuming it might be quite a bustling and hectic place and perhaps not a generous or entirely pleasant metropolis? (it being a LE society mostly?) These are the reasons for her coming east - to escape her own city and country...

I have a read a little that Varanites tend to be arrogant. I am playing her as being quite 'posh'. any other conventions on Varanites would be welcome

Good to see more players working toward that kind of character concept!
I found the comparison of a slightly narrow sighted Fascist to be handy at times. Not always good to get friends, but it was helpful to remember that one’s character was indoctrinated with all kind of propaganda when coming from Varanite heart lands. It sure offered some good RP moments…

It's been awhile since I've been IG, or in a timezone where I can get in on a lot of the storyline action. But, on the most updated version of the Campaign So Far Thread, we have

The heart of the Empire has fallen to Canas, after its Emperor is corrupted by 'Azai,' one of Canas' Knights who was smuggled into the Summer Palace by high-ranking clergymen of Culnul and Coloth. Marcus lives and breathes still, but his will is no longer his own. He, along with leading members of the conclave of the the faith, proclaims the divinity of Canas, and he leads his own Legions against Old Varana in the name of Canas.

The Kingdom of Dasaria is declared, leaving the Varanites who remain refugees. So that's something to keep in mind. You might have mixed feelings about fighting alongside people you once considered traitors and rebels. Plus, you will probably have family back home who are in danger. Also, you'd have to be aware that if you have just left Varana, it would be good to have a story to explain how you got away. It gives you a lot to work with.

Among the men of the empire the citizens of Old Varana have a deserved reputation for arrogance. To a true citizen of Old Varana although the other provinces of Varana are part of the empire, they are also, to varying degrees, inferior to Old Varana, the cradle of civilization itself. The best families, wisest academies, finest craftsmen and cleverest politians are all to be found in Old Varana.

Old Varana is also a hotbed of intrigue and betrayal. It is not uncommon for men of good, or not so good, standing to rapidly need to go in to exile. Those with friends in power might hope one day to return, while those without face a life dwelling on the lost splendors of the old country.

It's an attempt to capture what has actually transpired in-game over the years, either through 'campaign events' or by things groups of players have done that have changed/shaped the group story, and is by no means comprehensive or approaching the 'truth' any more than your nightly news is.

The information in the Campaign Background section is just as true (or false) as it was on the day it was written -- Though one must remember that ALL narrators are unreliable here.

The tale is told by the participants in the story. The power is in your hands still to shape it further and to imbue it with new import.
