The Black Rose Annul

Today I begin the record of the Black Rose Company of Mercenaries. I am Ashalley, and it should be known to you by now if you can read this script that I am I’tel’gothrim, a wandering one.

Let me tell you a little something about being a mercenary.

No titles, no songs, and no stupid stories or false accolades. We’re what every knight order is, at the core; in short, we kill people for a living, win wars, trade blood for gold. The difference is that we make no apologies, and offer no rationality except the sound of coin on coin, which is, over the eons, what seems to motivate the entire human race and most other, lesser races.

Not something I agree with, personally; To believe the Rianians, whom I here refer to and distinguish as separate from my own people, but must acknowledge as misguided cousins at the very least, is to believe that power can be held through the facade of righteousness. It seems to be the case that, if you seem to be right, people follow you out of some sense of duty. If you ask my opinion, it’s a fool’s notion, else why would it be so easy to manipulate them into foolery? I am telling you now that to believe that the glimmer of righteousness will foster and grow on its own, isolated, without the nurturing and constant care of those sold upon the very lie is nothing short of idiocy. Isn’t the world, itself, as created, a place of the most base and uncompromising harshness? People - all beings, it seems - act initially from selfishness.

Your benevolent rulers will change the world? You could work for free, but it will still benefit you in the end. To cast in with them is to gamble and weigh the benefit, for you or yours, against the risk. Swallow that, for a moment. The difference between you, and us, is that we prefer to count our coins instead of betting them, like idiots.

I tend to think power is more ephemeral in nature, but whether the rich become rich through power, or the powerful, powerful through riches, is not a debate likely to end in my immortal lifetime.

It exists, that correlation – money’s power enough. Wasting time arguing the morality of immutable, observable fact most commonly ends in death.

I make no apologies. Neither should you. But, then, that is why I am writing this introduction; it is a forewarning.

Sometimes in this accord I will lie – blatantly – but then again, I cheat at many things. Cards. Love. Trust. In my many years I’ve killed, stolen, lied, whored, committed forgery, libel, slander, pimped, slaved, raped, and been raped, and been born again in blood and fire in steel. Therefore I shan’t mince words. This may never be read, and should it be read, perhaps you fools will sneer your noses some more and claim it heresy or worse. See if we care! You scholars. Ratty bastards.

But I have your attention, at least.

It has been some time since I picked up the quill and wrote in our annul, far too long. I am Kenyon McBain Executor of the Black Roses . In olden times the outfit consisted entirely of black soldiers . Thus the name. Its slow drift northwards has seen not only its diminution but a shift in its make up .

We are the last of the true free companies of the south. We have out-endured the others by more then a half century. But I fear we are into our twilight days. I fear this might be our last commission . A page of history is about to be turned . Once it does the great warrior brotherhood will be gone and forgotten. I pray to the gods and hope this does not come true . I hope the decisions I make are the right choices for the companies sake.

The Black Roses have grown in size since we came to Cear . seems everyone is looking for work these days , and I cant blame them there is plenty to be had if you know where to look. The company started out with just me , Ralin our wizard plus enchanter and then Maliker a master of the shadows. Ralin is the best I have seen so far in his craft but I suppose with age comes experience . I believe he is the oldest of us all at least sixty winters. Then there is Keelin a lovely young lass and a wizard as well but not as experienced as Ralin but she is just as deadly. There is also our newest members Ashalley a I’tel’gothrim not much is known about her but I am sure we all will get to know her soon enough. And finally the loud Dwarf Glimi he is the newest of us all and the roughest.

I have secured a few jobs for the Roses in hope to raise enough coin to make pay call and to find us a place to hold up in while we are here in the north. Revalis whom is a druid of some sacred grove of standing stones has hired us to keep an eye on the place . Its a start and she pays well and that's all that matters in this profession. Secondly commander Allers of the Talon forces has ordered us to stand guard in Two Bridges , a city north of Cear . We are to protect the small town from the forces of an evil witch called the Mistress . I will need to meet with Allers to discuss the terms of some sort of pay and supplies. Its not much but it is a start and a foot hold in the war. Hopefully we can make a name for ourselves and line our pockets with gold as we do so. . . I will write more in our annul when I have more to say and can find the time .

The Captain not being very verbose, I elaborate;

There are two jobs the company presently takes.

The first is guarding the ‘town’ known as “Two Bridges.” It is as dour as its name suggests. There are four or perhaps five buildings that have not been razed to the ground, and one of them is where most of the company has posted up, now including myself. The room is on the second floor, the roof is too low even for me, and the whole tavern, at all times of day and night, is too damnedable loud and smells like piss.

Dwarves call it ale; I suspect that dwarves often kill their tastebuds at young ages.

This commission has come from some Talon Commander whose name I forget. No doubt some other account has been posted.

The second job is the guarding of a druid grove, somewhere nearer the coast. There is a forest nearby. When Ralin took me there, I noted that the place is more or less indefensible. There are no palisades, no defensive placements. He states that the druids are extremely potent, but if that were true, why would they hire us? And what for? There are only six in the company, at present, though our pay is coming regularly. A thin black line that’s liable to become a thin black smear.

At the moment, the only thing we’re really required to do is light the watch-fires, and bunker down for garrison reinforcements. Good pay for little work. The rain is annoying.

Browsing the company records, which are kept in a large cedarwood chest, I find that there was a proposal to hire us on retainer - but from the several, further letters, it becomes obvious that we would have had our teeth pulled and more or less been enlisted representatives of this country exclusively. The pay would have been little consolation for selling our souls. From what I have seen of the order that issued it, this doesn't surprise me very much.

I'm not sure I'd bother standing the line for them. Especially after seeing how strategically they handled the previous situation. Hard on one's health to be the only people fighting a horde in the middle of a field without any reinforcements from the very-close-nearby keep. Even archery support, or ballistae, would have been of assistance. Instead, two or three knights attempted to hold a broad pathway in the town while being assaulted from two sides, on the principle of saving the town. Fat lot of good it did. I nearly bought it, along with several others.

So far I do not mind this company, but then again, I have known them very little. From what I can see, Ralin is canny; Kenyon, the captain, too quiet by far. A serious man.

At least they don't argue with each other.

Commander Allers finally visited Two Bridges last eve . I found him and the Captain Cato wandering about the town inspecting the ruined buildings and the wall . I had sent a request for aid for this small hovel to help rebuild especially the defenses. He had informed me that I was given the go ahead to rebuild the city but there is a catch , there is always a catch . He could offer little aid in supplies and money and the best he could do for now was for the gate I requested for the wall. The Black Roses would have to fund and find the supplies for everything else that was needed. But first the defenses are to be built then the rest can follow , easy enough ? Lets hope so .

I have saved enough coin in our coffers to get this project started and will need to find some skilled masons and carpenters. Myself and the other Roses can help pitch in with the labor intensive jobs , Im not afraid of hard work and a little dirt. I pray and keep my fingers crossed that all goes well . I will continue to post updates here in the Annuls as needed .

It finally happened , the Koalisk attacked Two Bridges with a thunderous boom sections of the wall and grave yard gate came down. The Koalisks poured into the town like another river , screams of horror came from the fleeing town folks as myself and Allirae made are way through the fleeing crowd. Another young warrior wearing a turban and wielding a sabre joined us . I believe his name was Samael . We waded into the wave of Koalisks cutting them down one by one . Brother Uriah and a few other of the town guards joined us as flames rose up from the walls , cries of terror and pain filled the air from those caught in the fires.

The battle seemed to last forever and it seemed all would be lost . There was hope , Scarlet and Argus the half orc came running over the bridge leading a charge right into the heart of the battle. Scarlet with her heavy war mace , swinging it into a wall of Koalisks . The sounds of the beasts cries could be heard as their skulls and bones were being smashed beneath her flurry of blows. Argus smashed into another wall of Koalisks wielding his hammer and axe , crushing bones and severing limbs as he did so. This charge was enough to finally push back the beasts and force them to retreat back to where they came from. The damage was mostly done to the walls and gates , luckily no one died from this attack. The repairs a be expensive but in the long run it will be worth it for us . I will be sending a formal report to Commander Allers to let him know how dire the situation is here in Two Bridges....

Today its a very sunny and hot day as I stand in one of the rivers with boots and pants on . I wouldn't want to distract the women folk if I stripped down to my under garment as I help collect river rock to help repair the damage to the town wall . I'm not one to shy away from hard work , besides its good for ones soul so they say. I can't say the same for Maliker , I have walked passed him several times now carrying a heavy load as he just sat in front of the Red Leaf Inn with a bottle of ale . Some folks are not cut out for such work but it might do them some good if they did it once in awhile. He says he is trying to recall the list of names and the information on them that we had taken from the Kor orcs .

Our supplies have been rerouted through Morrel and hopefully will arrive with in a few days time . Captain Cato did this so we can find the spy in Lendose which we did find him but he was very much dead . So Alleria followed what tracks she could find which lead us outside of Lendose to a cave filled with Kor orcs and Canites. As we made our way inside the cave we had several skirmishes with sentries but nothing we couldn't handle . We came to a huge room deep inside the cave system it had an altar at one end and a large table with maps and such in front of it . there was also plenty of beds and weapon racks on the other far side of the room . As we made our way into the center of the room the Kor and Canites seemed to just appear from out of thin air and attacked . This caught us a bit off guard but luckily we had Sir Phelan with us . He was a great help in turning the tide of the battle in our favor as the Kor and Canites began to fall one by one . After the battle is when we searched the room and found the list of names and information on those on the list. Sir Phelan quickly used his magic to get us out of there and back to Lendose . We made our way back to the inn and caught up with Captain Cato briefed her on what happened and handed over the list to her . And that is why Maliker says he is sitting there on his arse trying to remember the information from said list.
