"Progress" is a very dangerous term in a social, political and cultural context. Just because the winners say they are instituting progress doesn't necessarily mean they are improving a situation. Not all technology is beneficial, in the long run.

In my inherent and unending hypocrisy, I am often labeled a "pacifist hippy" by my roommates, but am still fascinated by war history and war games. Oh well.

I beg to differ. Whilst true of the 20th century not true of earlier centuries. And definitely not true of medical advances.

The effects of warfare have always killed more people than the actual military action itself. Just because it happens over several years thereafter does not mean it is not occuring.
