I thought about posting a long, in depth account here, but I decided against it. There's really not much to say on this topic aside from this, I think:

The DM's, builders, and other admin staff are busting their tails as hard as they could to improve Das2... often in ways most of us can't see (i.e. not all updates add new content, for those of us who might forget that (myself included)). I appreciate this dedication to a game that I thoroughly enjoy, and I think most people here feel the same way. Do we want more? Of course! But, we have to be understanding and respect the time constraints of everyone who's contributing to this project's development.

I am thrilled just to be back in Dasaria (after my involuntary hiatus), in an environment where I know there is quality content, and more importantly, quality PEOPLE behind the project that I love so much. I'd like to personally thank EVERYONE who's working to make Das 2 into the world that it is and is becoming.

I had been playing for about a month when I was informed that our most generous Dev team and DM's do this in their free time and unfinancally paid which was most surprising. I've said it plenty of times before and I'm sure I'll say it plenty more; Big Thanks for all the time and effort you have been putting into ours and yours "playground" Dasaria II. :D

I greatly enjoyed going through each of the areas with my three characters, Maraks majic spoon quest still gives me a laugh when I see players running buy with spoons. I am sure I'll enjoy it all again when I decide what I'd like to try for my next character. (Gone off the Noble thief Idea because I am sure I will get bored of him within a week)

I have been learning how to Rp and enjoy it as I was a total newbie to PW's when I first logged on, frequently my character stops talking when talking with a few of their IC friends because I'm RL LMAO. I think I'm doing okay at it and other members of the awesome Dasaria community help me out when needed.

I absolutely loved the DM events I have been honoured to be a part of so again big thanks for those pleasurable memories, I look forward to more of them when you have the time and the urge to start them :D

We are all aware of the regular current; :evil: , :x , :cry: , :? and finally the :roll: problems but we shouldn't forget they are being worked on which I believe is where we members of the community need to;
1; remain patient
2; add our own little and/or big input to the game
3; maybe even work collectively on a short term project to give the Dev team and DM's a break from us?? (maybe thats a bad idea but heh I never said I have all the answers)
4; Don't forget the is a tournament to look forward to and prepare for
- I think that will do, my main points are big thanks to the DEV's and DM's and when they aren't around we the awesome community make our own fun.

Cheers to that! Well spoken.

I'm all for stirring up a mini-story line or sideplot between our PC's without the DM's. That's what role-playing's all about!

In defense of the DMs…

Post by blackheart »

In defense of the DMs… (and not just because I have a long list of favors to ask as per usual)

Well, I didn't catch the original post, but in following this thread yeah, more DM involvement is better; Unfortunately while the demand for this is probably infinite (at least mine is, LOL), supply, for all the reasons cited here, isn't.

Also IMHO the Namregs and related fiascoes have been a huge drain on energy and attention that could otherwise have been positively directed to events, building, and/or the campaign.

Anyway, please recognize that the DMs are not only a) volunteers, b) people with lives, but c) they’re also other players, just like their PnP counterparts. Like the players they will weave in and out of the game over time, assuming various characters, but foremost they’re also there to play at the same game as you, albeit in the control seat. They aren’t there to serve us, even though they’ll often lend a helping hand (if you strike the right balance between begging and pestering). Besides, it can't be fun for them if we make them feel it's a job to come by on some regular schedule and perform for us.

With respect to DM involvement, I guess I have just been fortunate (or on the server too much); I've been in one scheduled faction event (thank you Wyv, if you're reading this), and several unscheduled (at least from my perspective, who knows?) DM events (thank you Sabre, Falcon) since I've become part of this community, and all have, in one way or another, not only been a blast, but have helped keep my excitement about this place alive. Heck, one time I was even in something I thought was a DM event but turned out to be driven by a high-level caster.*

I can’t speak for the DMs I haven’t (knowingly) encountered, but we all eagerly kept our ears to the ground after several successive nights of Sabre's undead attacks; we chattered about them for days, putting forth various theories and what have you; and you'd see the server just fill up about the same time each night with characters gathered in hope and anticipation about the coming of "the master." Likewise, with the opening of Aucklorn Mill; Falcon's been on quite a bit, no doubt surveying and adjusting his creation, and providing good fun and hordes of undead to the players that will surely coalesce around the Mill ever time he comes on. Heck, the events surrounding the discovery of Aucklorn even got me back into a higher-level char I had nearly diversified out of. And both DMs have been pretty good about sending Shouts when they're in the mood to play as well, giving those with the appetite the opportunity to participate.

I dunno, try to keep up the enthusiasm. Maybe you don't need to be constantly served and entertained by the DMs, but it'd be a shame to lose a good player to frustration. I know there's a lot of good player submitted stuff out there just waiting to get in game. A magic window will come when a lot of this stuff can finally work its way in. Then we'll have an even larger playground and scope for both DM and player-initiated quest, as well as more areas to knock around and keep the novelty fresh.

* While I know the summoning of dangerous creatures is frowned upon, I don't see any reason why a high-level char in the course of RP might not engage willing lower-level char on a quest of his or her own imagining. Of course you can't grant XP, but you can surely pay gold, rare items, or crafting services in exchange for a little fun.

I had been told that the DMs were discouraged. The intent of my post was to start a dialogue regarding the functionality of the DM client, Obsidian, and the challenges presented to DM interaction by NwN multiplayer. I thought it would be encouraging to hear the view points of those who are spending so much time endorsing this game - the staff. I (mistakenly) thought I was informing the DMs that thier presence was longed for. I found Falcon's post profoundly uplifting. That was the direction I was hoping the conversation would go.

Anyone who thinks I don't appreciate the Staff's efforts is mistaken. 'The inadequesies of the DMs' was not the point of my post, which is obviously how it came off to some. I must have expressed my concern very poorly.

I love the dm interactions i've had thus far, so im ussally on the lookout for any "events" (as i classify such occurences) that may be going on, think i might have to go try and jump off a cliff if i missed one that was going on while i was online.....cept the game doesnt seem to keen on letting me fall of em, so might be easier to pick a fight with a dozen guards...or some trolls or somthing

anyway, I for one think it is a truely great thing, the world that all the builders and dms have created, that they are creating, and i am honored to be a part of it

So id just like to thank all the dms, and the builders for the time and dedication, and passion, that they have poured into dasaria
The Queen of air and darkness
Begins to shrill and cry,
`O young man, O my slayer,
To-morrow you shall die.'
O Queen of air and darkness,
I think 'tis truth you say,
And I shall die to-morrow;
But you will die to-day.

To the DMs: I really enjoy the quests, the world, the DM interaction, and the other players here. The bozo quotient here is remarkably low and the fun factor is very high. I've also had a blast with the live DM events that I've been fortunate enough to be a part of.

To Rhode: I'm probably the player you got pissed at for sending you a tell regarding not joining a other characters participating in a DM event way back when. I apologize if it rubbed you the wrong way. That was my first DM event ever and I wasn't really sure what the etiquette was. Overall, the reaction was based on the IC notion that your character was not trustworthy. However, I see now that I should have handled it more IC and I didn't, so I apologize. I respect you as a player and am saddened that I've managed to upset you OOC.

It's the way of some people to see the negative things first and therefore completely miss the positive ones. A good example is how people reacted to my post here, where i just stated that we shouldn't take RP'ing too seriously, because we shouldn't wait too much from an unfinished product, and they got all defensive. At least they sounded like that or something. This is common human behaviour, so we need to get used to it. The fact that you can't hear the tone of voice of the poster only adds to the confusion, and we just have to prepare to explain our points over and over again until they're seen in a correct light.

And now that i've gotten to it, i'll clarify my statements about role playing:

The product isn't finished, and the world is still a bit lacking in every single aspect, so give it time. Taking roleplaying too seriously now leads to things that the server isn't ready to face yet, like a certain EOS farce in the recent past. And i wasn't saying you shouldn't roleplay, you just have to be aware of the limits of an unfinished product.

And my statement about the DM events:

The DM's are doing this for their own amusement, and they should only do DM events when they feel like it, and build new content when they feel like it. The point about the DM events not being necessary was meant to tell you that the DMs don't have to make any events if they don't feel like it.
Insanity has been kind to me, but no longer.

Grayle: Hey buddy, I don't think anyone thinks that you don't appreciate the staff's efforts. I think there was just some confusion regarding what your post said. Nothing more than that. We all know how difficult it is to communicate via text only, without inflection behind it. I know I've come off as downiright attacking people on this (and other) forums without intending too... it's bound to happen. Regardless, you've apologized, and hopefully everyone's cool now... so... LET'S GET IN THE GAME AND HAVE SOME F***ING FUN!!! :D :D :D :D  :D

(That last little bit goes for EVERYONE.)

If I were a religious man I would say "God bless the Dev's and DM's".
If I were better and faster at typing English, then I would apply to become a DM.

But I can say that I'm impressed and enjoying myself when I play Dasaria. I had a good friend nearly knocking my door down yesterday. I couldn't hear my phone or his shouting or the door bell.. I was playing Dasaria.

I can also say that I have been peeking around the toolset now.. and hope to be able to give just a little fun area back to be shared with those who gave me many. I have been in a couple of DM events so far and I liked them all very much. Be it the hack n' slash at the graveyard because of the foul deeds done by Aswaith, the Marshall and his undead lovers, the great battle of the bards at the Buck, the occasional npc acting out of character. Which reminds me of one time where I stood firm as my dwarf and watched the grass grow(was afk).. right when I came back with a fresh load of coffee a npc guard approached him and demanded to know if my dwarf had just used Marcus and Donkey in the same sentence. I had no idea what was going on but knocked him down on the spot in one hit.. of course the guard began to weep and say how he had always wanted to be a dwarf, or called Mandrake. Well some of the above might not be true, but it is all good fun. So thank you Dev's and DM's! :) And always remember that you bring joy into this world. Far from everyone can say that.

And its just plain fun to see Dasaria develop. Not only the areas, but also the player interactions. When I log in, I usually browse the in game character list and get a feeling of anticipation because of all the great RP possible or the potential for new encounters. Heck, sometimes even just a good time hack n' slash with a cigarette and a cup coffee. But many times I have had a good laugh because of the RP between players. Thank you community! :)

And if anybody spots anyone pull the plug on any kind of plugged luxury liner, then come ask if I have a spare.

See you later ingame :)

PS. Sometimes so many things are happening at once ingame or I am afk, so I might have missed some DM'ing going on. You guys could just put a note in the inventory of the player saying something like "Report to the gaol at once you see this note. You did not act when you were approached in this matter, and now you must pay!"

PPS. Maybe just say that the campaign begins in half a years time? That way, no one gets their hopes up too soon? Also you high level players, instead of getting restless go make a new great char... flood Dasaria with gnomes or something :)
