"Guardsman Jewel?"

The Captain's voice tears her away from the frustrated focus on what apparently passes for an income and expenditures record around here - a handful of hastily scribbled notes, with such detailed entries as "Pay K. 200" and "S. needs 94 as per L."

"Sir?"

"Good news on one of the applicants. The Ministry approval just came in"

She frowns, looking at the document waved at her, attempting to spot a name.

"Which applicant, sir?"

The document finally lands on her desk with a smile from the Captain.

"One more person to do the work. Good job, that might ease up the patrol rotation a bit."

Her eyes take in the official writing, quickly moving toward the name written on the form. She frowns, glaring at the characters as if the power of her will was enough to change the situation.

"Jalaem, sir? Sir, as I indicated in my report, there is quite a good chance he will cause quite a bit of unrest among, sir!"

The face of the man standing in front of her desks takes on an official expression, his words likewise pronounced in a way to curtail any further comments.

"You know very well how short-staffed we are, Guardsman. The application was approved by the Ministry, and I personally am looking forward to have some more man at our disposal. Your concern is noted and appreciated, but I am certain it is misguided."

He nods curtly.

"Take care of all the arrangements, if you please. I want this man out in the street patrolling starting tomorrow"

"Sir, but the uniform procurement alone"

Her outburst is cut short by a wave of his hand.

"Take care of it, Guardsman. That's an order."

She is left to gaze gloomily at the confirmation of the appointment left on her desk for the brief moment before she turns back to the never-ending paperwork seemingly dumped on her desk just as it is about to become critical.

Just another day at work.

Rumor in the city barracks and gaol spreads among the guards about how some Talon Captain marched a half-orc and half-elf into separate cells one hour, then had them running about with five or six others on errands the next. The third or fourth cell on the east wall of the first level is still strewn with empty bottles and has a discarded ruined spoon next to a stone block with the words "Nrungg Wuz Heer" dug into it. Others talk about how they happened to see Holly the Gaoler tipping back a bottle full of green sludge in her off-hours with a dreamy look on her face.

Guardsman Jewel's desk sat covered in stacks of paper, unused since her transfer to Cuhanna.
But within the last few hours the papers have been filed, inkwells filled, and a fresh stack of writs delivered.
Placed prominently in the middle of the desk is a book marked Notable Laws of the Varanite Empire, next to which is a new uniform requisition form.

Myriah walked into the barracks and presented herself to Captain Waters, her facial expression stoic. After the drill she had come to expect being who and what she was, he escorted her to her desk and left her among the whispers of the rest of the guards.

As Myriah pushed her hair out of her eyes and begun filling out the uniform requistions, the jests started flying.

"Such a little bitty thing, think they will have a uniform to fit her?"

"Nahhhh, it will have to be special made, but hey, she is built almost like a boy. No where near as curvy as the other female that tried to play as a guard."

"Her hair is prettier though, and I bet she has curves enough under those clothes."

Myriah kept her facial expression neutral, not responding to any of the verbal taunts. She was very aware of the position of each guard and she was also aware that her reactions would determine how she would be treated in the future.

One of the guards quickly grew irritated at her lack of response. He approached the slip of a female who had the gall to assume she could do his job. His voice was smug as he reached out to caress her cheek, "Bet she will be a treat in the Barracks at night."

Quick as a snake, Myriah's booted leg caught him behind the knees, sending him to the floor with a loud crash. He didn't even have time to catch his breath before her booted heel was crushing his windpipe and her blades were drawn. For the first time she spoke, her voice icy cold. "Ya can say what you wish, ya can make what remarks about me body, me lack of femininity and my race, but ya touch me and the next time ya move yer bowls ya will be wiping yer arse with a hook."

Captain Waters chuckled heartily from the doorway, the sounds making Myriah step back, and the guards scrambling into military position. The captain had heard that in spite of her size, the female could handle herself well, and the scene he had witnessed satisfied him. He left the area still chuckling, as the guards returned to their duties.

A few of the men eyed the female elf with a new respect. At least she would not shrink from the violence their work will sometimes entail. But a few guards still looked at her with scorn, especially the one she just knocked on his arse. Myriah merely continued reading the required manuals. Her face maintained that same, neutral expression, her jaw was set stubbornly. However, hidden beneath her desk, her hands were shaking with suppressed nerves and rage.

An opened letter bearing the official seal of the church of Lochwar has been left on the captain's desk along with a short note.

________________________________________________________________

The Church of Lochwar formally charges the following crimes against the Namreg Family, enclosed with our charges you will find two SIGNED confessions by two other Members of the Namreg family, who The Church has forgiven for their heresy;

The crimes the Church Charges against one "Nell Namreg"" are as follows:

3 accounts of Major Heresy for assaulting and putting into near death conditions 3 followers of Lochwar. In addition, standard assault charges will be asked of by the Guard.

1 account of Major heresy for assault of a Church representative.

1 account of Major Heresy for proclaiming her Patron deity as one of the Banished gods - Known only as "The Destroyer of Gods".

1 account High Heresy for attempting to convert Citizens to a false god, known only as "The Destroyer of Gods" .

1 account High Heresy for Claiming Lochwar as a False God.

1 account of High Heresy for wearing holy symbols, and carrying an Ankh of a banished god - Known only as "The Destroyer of Gods".

1 account of High Heresy for laying down deadly and destructive traps on the path to the Church of Lochwar - to prevent followers from attending Church, with the intent to kill.

1 account of Minor Heresy for her disrespect to the True Faith.

1 account of Minor Heresy for her willful disobedience of the True Faith.

The Church humbly requests that Death be the only punishment for this Citizen.
______________________________________________________________

This just arrived from Father Minuvas. It looks like the church is still using a different system than we are but it should translate into the following.

5 Counts of Assault, 4 Counts of Heresy, 2 Counts of Civil Disobedience

All guardsmen need to be looking for this fugitive. Her capture and execution should be a top priority.

*A letter arrives at the City Jail, addressed to Guardsman Myriah Snapwyre. The letter is written on golden papyrus, which is rarely used outside of the Imperial Court. It bears the seal of House Vaine, one of the minor nobles houses of the Empire. In perfect, flowing Varanian script the letter reads*

My dearest Myriah,

I was overjoyed to see you in your guard uniform. Finally you have overcome the dual barrier of race and gender and have joined the ranks of the Emepror's Finest.

I recognise, that because of your recent enlistment, that you have been very busy lately. However I do miss our little chats in the cool night air. In fact I miss the feminine company greatly. While I enjoy the admiration that gentlemen show me, chatting to women of action like yourself is far more liberating. I feel we have a lot in common Myriah, but ironically we are at opposite ends of the ruler. Well, they say opposites attract.

However, it would not be proper for me, as a Maiden of the Church and as a friend, to impose my needs upon you. Good luck and well done, my friend. If you ever need any help, don't hesitate to call me your friend.

Praise Lochwar and the Emperor!

*written in Elvish is the following* p.s. watch Captains Waters. A good man, but he has a reputation with the ladies. Given the chance, you would be an exotic treat. Also watch out for a Gnome called Bestaffare. I horrid little thing, she kept on calling me a 'skirt' and was mightily disrespectful to my station. Lochwar granted me tolerance not to feed her to the wolves myself! However if you see her breaking the law, feel free to show her that Emperor does not tolerate visitors disturbing the peace and harassing its religious representatives.
