I disagree with a lot of what people have said, but I don't really want to get into a long debate over it. I cordially request that the builders of Dasaria 2 put more Neutral options in for conversation trees, that's all.
What Wyvern says is interesting. Actually, this changes things a bit; I've been under the impression that it was possible to shift towards Neutral, not just have an option that didn't shift your alignment at all. Is this not the case? I DON'T want the ability to do every quest without changing my alignment; I just hoped that there would be quests that would actually change my alignment towards Neutral. Maybe that's not how the engine works, in which case I like Wyvern's suggestion best so far. Perhaps a Good character that chooses the neutral response should get halfthe shift towards Evil, instead of the whole shift.
Wow, if this is really how the alignment system works (only able to shift towards Good or Evil), then that means Obsidian really required Neutral characters to be bipolar; choosing Good one time and Evil the next. I think we can all agree: that's ridiculous.
By the way, before I get flamed for suggesting that alignment can shift in three directions (spatially) instead of only two (linearly): I had envisioned something like an equilateral triangle split into three equal regions. The three corners represent pure Good, Evil, and Neutral; The region closest to that corner represents some shade of Good, Evil, or Neutral. So a Neutral character could start in the pure Neutral corner, and then shift towards the Good or Evil regions, as well as doing a Neutral action that would shift him back towards the Neutral corner. I guess that's not how the game works (sorry if that was confusing).
Actually, this kind of makes me mad. Basically what the game designers have done is make it so that Neutrality doesn't exist; only Good and Evil exist, and a Neutral person is someone who spends half his time doing Good and half doing Evil. This really seems at odds to the way I've thought about D&D neutrality for the past 16 years. It also seems at odds with the description of Neutral in the character generation screen; oh, well.
Okay sorry I'm done complaining
. I think I've brought enough attention to this issue and I'll stop bugging people now.

Forgive, Oh Lord, my little jokes on thee
And I'll forgive thy great big one on me.

Don't worry, I just tossed that out there when I couldn't sleep at 2am this morning.
I have no idea if it works that way, but it's an interesting spin on things. I also like sharper shifts, for acts that a further off of your alignment. Like a Paladin committing murder. That is extreme, but I bet we have one or two who have done it already in a quest.
We will keep all options open - not all quests will shift alignment, but we will try to cater for as many as we can, depending on the quest content.

hehe, yeah... technically, a paladin knowingly killing an innocent should result in the instantaneous revoking of their pally powers and status (Like Miko in OotSWyvern wrote:Don't worry, I just tossed that out there when I couldn't sleep at 2am this morning.![]()

Overall though, you do what you have to in the dialogs for the quests to preserve your alignment, and your true alignment should come out in how you interact with the other PCs... i think alignment and alignment shifts will become more important once we start to see more DM events... then you'd better be on top of your game!
