What's the point?

Show us the distances involved too. That'd be neat.

The equally good reporting thing made me laugh quite a bit. More likely accurate, equally bad. One great thing about the internet, if nothing else, is one can see this for truth. Just browse to a foreign media outlet and read away, a lot of them even publish in English.

It may be true that all you hear is bad things about the US over seas. What do you think we hear about your neck of the woods? What a lovely Utopian paradise it is where everyone is smart and has the answers to all the worlds problems? I had a really interesting conversation with a fellow from South Africa not long ago, in which he told me of how he grew up hating the US with great passion, until he was forced to move here. Well, not forced, his family moved here, and he did as well a few years later to be near them. Now, some years later, he can only recall of how wrong and skewed everything he was fed about the US was, and how he would die to defend this country if he had to. He's working on becoming naturalized.

Most Americans will be the first to admit there's plenty of things wrong here today. But, no more so than anywhere else. To be so bad, it's hard to figure out why the US has one of the highest immigration rates in the world. And, to look about casually, we're doing just as much to fix our problems as the people of any other nation. More so in many cases.

If the only reason that the US gets so much criticism is indeed only because we're the last "superpower", well, that's a very poor excuse, and leads to the pot calling the kettle black in the worst possible way, even if the kettle is a really big kettle. If you want to talk about imbalances, take a look at the lop sided trade agreements, development funding, export/import agreements, and subsidies we put up with just to try and not stir up resentment. Well, we could go on and on, but really we're just getting tired of it. One day we may not be here, and I'm sure the rest of the world might rejoice at that for a while, in which event, we'll see how long that lasts.

Don't take me wrong, all that's not me being defensive in the least. It's me being just as free to criticize yours.

roflmao...

You really believe that Congress has a lower polling numbers because the president or Republicans in the Senate are holding back legislation?

Heh... there's a lot more to it than that, a hell of a lot more. Now, I may have a different perspective, as I happen to live in the greater Washington DC metro area, in other words, to me what happens in Washington is my local news.

Look at the recent attempt for immigration "reform" that the President, the Democratic leadership and the Republican leadership agreed on and was pushing. It got killed in the Senate because of a massive backlash from the American citizenry...

Another example is the fact that despite the Democrat's claim to run a more open Congress and do many things in the first 100 hours, they did... well, jack and even more jack. Even on things the President and Republicans said they agreed with there's not been action on. For instance, the minimum wage increase was only recently passed... as part of a war funding bill. Further, Speaker of the House Nancy (Princess) Pelosi managed to make a fool out of herself over multiple issues (her trip to Lebanon, the entire airplane thing), and now ethics violations are showing up from a Democratic congressman...

Oh, and so you know, I'm not too happy with the Republicans either, the party deserved to loose the majority in the House in '06 (I don't think they should have lost the Senate, but that's because I didn't think George Allen should have lost the Virginia senate race... but that's a different discussion). They were basically ignoring their base...

In other words, the reason the Congress (and President) have so low numbers is that they are out of touch with the American people. If these attitudes keep up, I'm betting the '08 elections are going to be interesting, as there's going to be a very strong anti-incumbent attitude in that election, which will hurt the Democrats more as they are the party in power, and I am certain the Republicans will be avoiding connections to G. W. Bush like the plague.

I just wish the Democrats and Republican presidential hopefuls would shut up for a few months... we only recently passed the halfway mark of the year, and I'm already getting annoyed with them.

The Republicans suck.

The Democrats suck.

The only true way is the Kaiju party. Godzilla/Mothra in '08.

Haha, i'll have to completely agree on this one.

In fact, it's no excuse, it's the reason you get so much attention, which in turn is the reason you get so much criticism, although there are not many who realize this. It's the way of the people to blame authorities. Also, i'm not saying it's a good thing, it's just the way it is. The excuses are "the americans are oppressors" and the crap like that. OFCOURSE americans oppress the whole world, start their own wars and do what they like; it's the human nature that leads to this. If you look at history, every single superpower has oppressed it's surrounding nations. It's also the human nature to complain about things that one has no power to change, like not being the big guy.

Any chance of getting such figures for, shall we say, North Korea, Iran, Columbia, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan? I'd be interested to know.

What defines the "crimes" anyway? There are so many variables to statistics it's silly.

Statistics are just lies unless you acknowledge the variables you have no control over:

"DEFINITION: Note: Crime statistics are often better indicators of prevalence of law enforcement and willingness to report crime, than actual prevalence."

I came across a funny factoid in that site:

Two actually which when combined is rather funny:

If you're looking to invade someone by sea, try Canada, which has only 9000 Navy personnel guarding the longest national coastline in the world.

Bolivia has 4,500 Navy personnel - which seems like quite a lot for a landlocked country.

Canada has a Navy twice as strong as Bolivia... lol.
And for those interested the US navy is 42x stronger (by manpower) than canadas and 5.5x stronger than the next runner up (Brazil)

Bolivia used to have a coastline, but had the territory taken off them by a neighbour (I forget which one). Bolivia maintains its navy in the hope of getting that territory back some day.

The USA, unfortunately does get a lot of bad press from some media outlets, often very subtle or skewed. The end result is that the uninformed believe the USA is full of twinky eating, gun-toting, fat racists. when this is not the case. I've seen Australian's portrayed as dumb, beer drinking illiterate yobbos, lazying around waiting for the next bushfire.

Some media outlets like to tow a trendy 'politically correct' line, or feel that bad news sells more than good news. I read a speech by Rupert Murdoch once that he believed the greatest risk to world peace in the 21st century will be ignorance.
