At other times it is just an excuse to talk crap. Each to their own, I really couldn't care less if a group was in game using a voice server or if they were typing. If I want to get a group's attention as a DM, it really isn't hard.

To have a Ventrilo server would add what is missing from the roleplaying
aspect.

It is what I miss from playing the old pen and paper games. At least we
were never always IC during play sessions. Not in live RP games either.
It is nice to be allowed to concentrate on being IC ingame, and to OOC
talk over voice.

The gods knows that I hate how I sound, but it is preferrable to the
crappy communication system they implemented this time around.

If someone sets up a server for this, please post it on here so I can
join. :)

If I start roleplaying over Vent I think my room mates will finnaly make that call to have the guys in the white shirts come and fit me for a special jacket and take me away for a special vacation. It's bad enough that I spend so much time in my room with my computer every once in awhile talking strategy over vent but if I ever started roleplaying that would finnaly convence them I was nuts.

well if my original post on the subject did anything it told me alittle bit about you all. So that in its self was worth it , although on the other hand I seemed to stirr some people up alittle bit and for that I am truly sorry. The only point was that in some cases teamspeak/ventrilo can be extremely usefull and that is all , if you feel that it isnt usefull in anyway fine.. just dont use it but if you want to pm me and ill set you up with an ip...

Hi all, I have pondered my thoughts on this matter and although I can see a few benefits to using vent I would have to agree with Eowade on this one.

Two of my friends live in my house and it would drive them nuts, sometimes it's bad enough three Alpha males living under the same roof. We try not to exacerbate the minnor issues we have into big ones. If you can keep this to yourselves when I have had enough drinks as ruler of my house I sometimes stirr them up and watch it fly. Opps fell off my chair laughing.

Lets not call it a Late 20's - early 30's Batchelor pad or party house. one of them has a longterm girlfriend, the other two of us are still searching for the right ones.

Be well all and see you ingame.

I'm relatively certain there is a lot of people that will prefer not to use voice chats for the game, so perhaps a consideration should be how you use them in a situation involving players who do not.

There is a difference between
Victim: Stop! Thief! Get him!

Thief *running away*: *Snicker snicker*

*The thief hides, later to be searched for by a party of powerful friends of the Victim*
and
Victim, on voice chats: This Thief just stole from me!

Level 20 #1, elsewhere in the world, on voice chat: Ok, I'm after him.

Level 20 #2, on voice chat: I'll wait for him by the gate.

Thief runs into Level 20 #2 just a moment after he escaped the Victim, gets smacked.

Thief: WTH, what was that?!

Level 20 #2: You stole from my friend.

Thief: HOW DID YOU KNOW?!
There are other, similar, aspects of this possible situation that might become an issue.

Personally, I do not like voice chats for a roleplaying computer game. The medium is not the same as tabletop D&D, and it rather takes away from my enjoyment of other characters when the Badass Barbarian of Doom starts squeaking excitedly in my ear ;)

I think a lot of people prefer the immersion available through the computer to the less intense experience of tabletop.

Not that that should stop you from doing what you like :)

Just please consider the occasionally unjustified advantage it may give your characters in the game world.

If I understand the concept correctly.. I don't like it. Anything that gives you an advantage over everyone else isn't something I like. I agree with Chia's representation of this as well. If you want to know something, use the magical mystery Party Chat.. essentially you could say this IS our voice chat all ready.

Meh.

Party chat has the same issues, really - except the DMs are able to oversee its use, from what I understand.

I'd rather rely on players' judgement than enforcing this and that.

Again, there is a difference between party chat line,

*Sounds of ferocious fighting come from within Mistyvale*

and

"Hey, I got this guy that attacked LowerLevelFriend before in Mistyvale, anybody want to help out putting him down?"

I'm not exactly hardcore RPer, but there are some things that do irk me... which mostly come down to players using the game mechanics for their advantage disregarding the in-game reality.

Whether people use voice chat or not there will always be those who metagame. The examples with the thief above can just as easily happen with party chat or tells so there is no advantage there that others cannot have.

On the flip side voice chat can enhance RP and enjoyment of the game. I know I have alot of fun chattingon skype while playing the Oaken brothers.

I fail so see how voice chat would be so bad after all I don't sit in silence when playing a PnP game and pass notes to communicate with the other players.

If you don't want to talk to others via a voice chat program such as skype then don't, if you do go for it as it is alot of fun.

Agreed, but then, it is far easier with voice - even the amount of time required to type may allow the thief, in that situation, to avoid the whole metagaming mess.

It's the immersion factor which is far greater (in potentia) for a computer roleplaying game that some of us are loathe to give up :)

Exactly. If it's your cup of tea, go for it, if not, sit in the glorious silence (or not so - I do enjoy listening to music while playing).

I just wanted to make a point about consideration for the players who are not on voice chats, as I will argue that they make things far more easier (and tempting) than having to type something in.

You haven't played with a good DM if you think a video game is more intense than the real thing.

I post for Starkie and Waffle's sake :) ...

Some points of fact that might be of interest...

Voice programs are external to NWN2. No one can stop any other player from using them, or make them use one. If they don't tell, no one not using it would even know. For that matter, players could call each other on the phone while the play...

The DM's already have a TS server we use, especially during events. No, you can't have access to it. Yes, we talk about you in it when we aren't coordinating events.
