I recently decided not to upgrade the poor three year old computer, and bought a new pc instead.
This was the old one:
AMD Athlon 2800+
Radeon 9800 pro 128MB
1 GB DDR PC3200 RAM
This 'could' run NWN2 and Gothic 3 on the lowest settings with around 18-28 FPS.
I upgraded to this one which runs everything fine with full settings (30-60 FPS):
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+
Radeon X1950XTX 512MB
2GB DDR PC4300 RAM
This new computer cost me exactly 1000 euro, but if you are only upgrading an old computer this would be much cheaper.
And by the way, though I like to build my own computers, there is nothing wrong with Dell. They are in my opinion the best place to get a decent home computer if you want it premade. They really do give you a lot for your money.

Some mornings it doesn't seem worth it to gnaw through the leather straps..

nothing more than $800. i'm a workin man now and i got bills to pay :D
specs: amd x2 4200+, at least 1g ram, at least 160g hd, an nvidia 7900gt would be nice but i don't mind a 7800 :), and an sli capable motherboard (for future additions) but really that gateway gt5228 that i'm looking at is good there just isn't a lot of room for addtions. and as you say the warrenty is voided once its tampered with
