as a matter of fact, i have to agree with this. However, every single thing that has a beginning, also comes to an end, and it's only wise to be prepared when such things happen, and by this i mean that any work done to support the guild via scripting and area design, should be made so that it's easy to recycle for other uses.

I'm confused - why does any faction have to come to an end? If it's heavily commercial such a thing could easily be a permanent addition to Cear.

sirius wrote:Oh, and, there's an easy fix to a bad High Arcanist, challenging, but that of course has its limitations, and I've considered duplicating the position so there'd be two, each able to veto the decisions of the other if they feel they're unwise or just plain bad (ala the Roman Consuls in the Republic). I've also considered making High Arcanist more of a figurative position, and leaving all power with the remainder of the Council.
perhaps the faction should be separated to two different wings, and both of these wings would have it's own high arcanist, who could use their veto-righ in the council. Just an idea though, for it feels like you have a little too many wings currently. The current wings could be then divided amongst these two main wings as sub-wings. The main wings could be "research wing" to include all kinds of magical research and artificing, and "operative wing" which could include the more active parts of the organization, such as intelligence gathering and sales. These were just examples, and i hope they at least give you some ideas on how to develop this faction.

I said a while back that I intend to severely reduce the amount, down to about 3 probably, but you're still right.

As to the composition of the new Aspects - I'll have to think on it, I'd contemplated class-based Aspects, but those would become too competitive and the High Arcanist position would pretty much jump between the wizard and sorceror aspect, leaving the warlocks out in the cold. It will be a shame to lose the Phoenix Guard, Overwatch and Tower Guard, but I'll find a way to include them in the proposal, even if they're not as independent Aspects.

I can't believe I forgot to do this earlier: I express my interest!

Recommendations? I think I can do that too... Uhh ...
Eldritch Knight Chain Shirts for all members! Mostly my character, but others too if they want. :)

Personally, I dont think that 5 aspects would be too much. For the start it would be enough to have one mage representing each aspect. As the guild grows, these mages can take apprentices, and by this increase the size of their aspect (and the whole guild).

If everyone else thinks that 5 is too much though, my recommendation would be to melt the tower/phoenix guard to one aspect, maybe give the leader of the tower guard the title "phoenix guard".
Since i think that most of us mages can craft wands and magical weapons/armor, this aspect might be a prestigeous aspect of the mage-guild. No matter what other aspect you represent, if you´re a crafter, you´ll be part of the crafting aspect. (guess Will Smith won´t like this idea  )

1 more thing comes to my mind though ....

what if there was a sub-wing, that stands beneath all other wings ? This wing would be exclusively for apprentices, who, after passing certain tests, may apply for one of the main wings of the guild, Or get chosen by the leaders of the main-wings.

I wonder, and this is mainly a DM team consideration, if it would be possible to associate the Mage's Guild with the Cearian University?

I would imagine it to add to the wealth and immersion of the world the same way that Minuvas created a real feel to the Church of Lochwar.

I do wonder what the rest of you folks thinks, though.

Ultimately, I would love to see all major institutions within the game world to be player-based factions.

Including the, ah, Explorers' Guild

Phoenix guard and such could be major aspects of the operative wing perhaps? Or if you decide to divide the guild into three for all the classes, then you could also have three high arcanists (one from each class), who would all have the right for veto.

It could also be the combination of both, where there are two operational parts (the research wing, and the operative wing) and then three governing parts (warlocks, sorcerers, wizards). after all, all three classes approach magic differently, yet their functionality is mostly the same (except for warlocks who can't craft thanks to those obsidian goatkissers). This way the system would include all the "schools" of magic using, and everyone could still choose wether they want a more active role or prefer to seek their more intellectual pursuits. What do you think?

I too would love to see more and more player driven factions of all sorts, be it criminals that control crime on a massive scale, heretics, rebels, groups of knights dedicated to upholding the law, etc.

its one of the factors that brings the world alive

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Ah screw it, heres a summary of my message that was sent to hell

Im not saying anything below you need to work on, or you dont have, i just started typing and was on a role

I dont see why this guild couldnt be here to stay if it is implemented well with the great infrastructure that it has
i went on to say about how a guild needs purpose, providing many analogies which are no doubt being read by demons in hell now
i said that a key ingrediant to a sucessful guild is purpose and motives, and that while existing for power alone, or fellowship alone, can work your guild will be stregnthened if it has a cause

i furthur went on to say that you should question why ppl would want to join, and listed a series of questions that prospect members might be asking themselves such as, why do i want to join? can i make money? can i achieve power or influence through the guild? and a handful of other questions

i also said that it can be a good idea to make sure that the guild has somthing to do, while you can just exist for fellowship and power, your guild will do better if each member has some sort of role to play, be it a spy for a heretic alliance, an assassin for a criminal guild that controls crime on a massive scale, and so on

There ya go, thats my summary....still disspointed about my orginal message being sent to hell tho

EDIT:...good thing i control ced this message it got sent to hell again

I rather like the idea, and would love to have my sorcerer, Ashano Rhyersen, join it, into any of the aspects. :D

Thanks velve and papaya, I've added your names to the list - sounds ominous huh? :P

And I'll get back to you on the university idea Chia, it's certainly worth looking into.

EDIT: Oh, and the DMs are yet to respond to my proposal obviously, I'll keep those interested updated via this topic.

Just helping establish the basis for civic strife between various official organizations. No thanks needed

Sooo i can't find the post that says so (im pretty sure im not imagining it though) but wasnt the university destroyed in the fall of Cear and replaced with the Trades and Commerce building in its place?
