Quoting Wyvern:
Wyvern wrote:EDIT - and with regards to the second point, we are receiving few to no official reports of grief-pickpocketing.
As a new player, I have been PP'd at least 4 times in the past three days. To my knowledge, none of these were RP'd, but I also do not play a class with detect skills, so who's to know if there was alot of cloak-and-dagger I missed. One of these thefts was at Edgar while I was afk making coffee. I had my inventory up. Another time I lost a quest key while in combat.

I do not submit an official report because:
- I'm poor and have little to lose
- I'm not bothered by PP; its all fake-money
- Without detect skills, OOC evidence is difficult.

Moving on...
My suggestion on Pickpocket is to Disable Pickpocket. (Keep in mind I play rogues and bards 90% of the time).

Server Rules:
- PP is RP only. (dicebag and /tells)
- PP is gold only without DM supervision
- PP can be for items with DM supervision.
- Alternative: Pickpocket = PnP Profession skill (You get gold/day depending on ranks)

Why disable pickpocket?
- PP is a horrible mess of a skill.
- As admins, I doubt you want the task of coding & testing improved pickpocket mechanics. You'd have to entirely recreate PP mechanics, and no matter the result, part of the playerbase will take issue with its inexactness. This would be time wasted, away from improving the mod and enhancing RP.
- On the otherhand, making PP an RP-only option is a simple solution, which emphasizes and encourages roleplay. Also, RP is has less limitations than the PP-skill-mechanics, and RP allows real-people to overlook the many many shortcomings with how PP is implemented in NWN.

Please disable pickpocket. Any purse-snatcher that cannot be bothered to communicate with others and roll a d20 probably shouldn't be "RPing" a pickpocket on an "RP server". Don't you think? PP attempts are supposed to be roleplayed right?

Thank you.

What quest key was it? There's a bug where they'll sometimes get eaten by the server for no discernable reason.

Question: How do you roleplay stealing from someone before you're actually accused, without setting off alarm bells?

That is indeed a good question. I play a rogue, and I rarely use pickpocket. Usually I only use it on my partner, just for pracitce and some funny RP. I have used it once on someone else we ran across in the goblin caves and some hilarious RP ensued, mainly because I had stolen a quest item which I certainly did not want to keep. I handed it back to my partner, who then told the man, "Hey I think you dropped this". He to this day thinks she is the one who stole it.

But as to how to RP theiving...I honestly don't know, unless you type in something like "your character name bumps into so and so". In the movies, the pickpockets always bump into someone, who then finds their wallet missing.

But NWN2 takes care of the bumping into aspect of it. The emote just draws undue attention to the act.

The trick is to make it very clear that it's a thief-nuking item that caused the effect (both when it first goes off and for the duration of the effect) so that there's no doubt what happened.
This was soo much fun in Blackstone Keep. I was terrified of picking the wrong pockets. :P

Heh, the ones I dealt with were in a MUD. The cursed gems'd get stuck to your hand, and the only way to get it off was to pour a very expensive potion or find a cleric.

It's a good thing my thief was married to a sorceress. I always had an excuse for the gems at hand. XD

Its certainly possible to check what was stolen recently and 'put it back' if its over a certain weight (or some other restriction).

Another alternative would be to disable the PP skill, and instead make PP tool which can have its own custom script attached to it. That way, the DM's can make it do whatever they wish.

I could even write such a script :)

I would love to see the PP skill disabled and give people who have it the points back to spend on other skills.

Wow, this thread is so ridiculously long already, it has stolen my very words.

I mean, come on, seriously, people; why is it such a big deal? Patience is a virtue: griefer pickpockets will vanish from Dasaria sooner or later, you don't have to outright ban thievery to weed them out. I realize the issue with levels and the spot skill; but give them less of a chance of getting your prized items, stock up on bullets or something, sell the things you don't use that are of considerable worth . . . it's not that hard!

Alright, I exit this thread, because I hate getting into arguments about game mechanics, their exploits, and the like . . . g'night folks. :)

I have an idea.

Chop off the hand of anybody you catch stealing.

Then a tiefling with both hands will get some peace from all the accusations.

How is loading up on bullets anything but metagaming?

It's not, heheh, I just was kind of irritated, and found it funny at the same time, that this thread had reached five pages. It's just a solution to get people to shut up.
