I haven't been on lately (stoopid confuser), but like several other folks, I'm definitely of two minds on it.

The one side says that there's a possibility I wouldn't have ever found Dasaria if it had been locked down. This means that we would be losing out on a lot of great people by making it harder to get in.

The other side says that if the server is good, an application process won't deter the right sorts of folks. From all the posts about idiots of all types, I'm thinking the gene pool needs a little chlorine.

Bah. I can't vote because I could passionately argue both sides of this one.

bah.....I'm inclined to let Fate take a hand. If these "great" people are deterred by an application and a password, maybe we didn't need 'em anyhow. :P

Hmmmm, an application will indeed help you weed out people who have no intention of roleplaying. It will also remove some of the disciplinary problems or time spent policing simply by cutting down the number of players. However, you will always have problems with griefers. Let’s face it, the internet lets people hide behind a wall of anonymity which brings out the worst in some. Rest assured, some griefers are intelligent and articulate enough to draft a great looking application but will proceed to cause chaos soon after they log on.

Pros of an application process:

1. The extra effort will help show who is really interested in role-playing here
2. Reduction of problems by reducing the number of players
3. You can be selective and screen out players that you feel won’t fit the play styles you want to see on your server.
4. If a bio is included it could help you immerse the characters further into the storyline by including some of the material into the DM run quests.
5. Once the server isn’t completely open to the public any longer, potential players will have to do some minor research and make a greater effort to play.

Cons of an application process:

1. You reduce the player base. Considering the different time zones the server may be empty for some of your people. You can be the best role-player on the server, but it’s a moot point if the only acting you are doing is for unresponsive npcs. I remember a server running the first NWN. It had a very detailed application, a decent number of registered users, posted bios in its forums and sounded really good. However, every time I logged on to play it was a ghost town or someone 15 levels higher than me was there and I couldn’t really adventure with them. The game will always segregate players by level ranges and time of day. Both of these things cut down on the ability to find someone to adventure with. Reducing the number of players will amplify the amount of separation.

Disruptive people ruin the environment for other players and cause the administrators to take time from being creative in order to deal with disciplinary problems. This will never go away completely as it’s just a symptom typical of online gaming in general. However, an application will most definitely reduce the problems problems to a degree. In my experience griefers tend to be immature types that lack patience. With a password and application, this type of person will most likely content themselves with one of the other servers with fewer restrictions.

Yes anything u need to do to encourage focus on story and roleplay as oposed to run around madly behaviours... by the way u guys its a wonderful place. Having never done Dasaria I i am loving being ....Mad And the wandering gnome... and have met some real ernest roleplayers in there. Cool stuff ..if it means u have more fun passworded then do it, the one day a week open for all idea is good too.

I haven't quite tried Dasaria yet (technical issues), but I should be able to as soon as I figure out what's wrong. I think Chiken's idea at the beginning was a good one, to have to post in hello, and pm someone in charge.

After a full(er) version is out, i'd agree with the apps. But not until way after beta.

I don't know if this has been said yet but, a compromise of passwording the server but no application might take care of a lot of concerns. People coming to the site and having to register shows a certain level of desire and potential dedication to the Dasaria without the alienation of a application process for someone that might just be skimming for a world to play and RP in. Just my 2 copper.

I'm not voting as its not realy my place, since I dont play, but thought id add my opinion for thought process either way.

Well for me I wouldnt have given Dasaria 1 more than a glance had it had a password or application as initially when I was looking for a PW I was just trying them out.
It just happened that some realy nice players made me feel welcome so it got more than a basic look.
If a good player has hit a few bad servers I think they realy wont be bothered trying to get a password or fill an app. just to see if its even worth the initial effort.

I think generaly griefers will get bored especially when they cant kill anyone cause the regulars have leveled some. Also like previously mentioned the Dasaria is one of the first few PW out, sure Im not expecting the sheer number NWN1 had, but there will be more and they will be more suited to the gamers. Even with the sheer number of servers with NWN1 we still got griefers, its just there are not as many places to share them out this time around.
