OLM missions

Post by pwdcrk »

hi i spent some time ( not that much to be honest ) in OLM and i noticed that missions there gives you exp but you have no loot ... it's quite strange since in every war or you get paid ( if you survive :D ) or you can have a share of the loot ...

so i was wondering is intentional not to grant even some loot when you succeed a OLM mission or is a technical problem that forces OLM missions that way ?

i'm asking because i noticed that OLM can be quite expensive ( kits hired soldiers etc .. )

thank you for reading :)

There are a few OLM missions that provide compensation, but most do not.

There's both a metagame reason for this and an IC reason.

Metagame wise, OLM missions serve as an outlet for high level PC gold (AKA a "Gold Sink"). While it may seem expensive to run OLM missions, it only takes a few runs through a couple of dungeons to restock that gold and then some. If you're having gold problems, might I suggest "talking" to the Faeries, Bandersnatches and Werewolves. Run all three of those dungeons and you're looking at well over 20k in loot.

The IC reason for this is because there simply isn't money. Pay attention when you're signing up as a "mercenary captain." Each side makes you swear an Oath of Allegiance (though they need to be updated, especially the Varanite one). Payment might come later, when the war is won, but right now you're being "hired" because you're a big damn adventurer who is presumed to have the money and resources to outfit your own unit.

That's how I've understood it. You have to take some of the OLM missions with a spin too, as you have to take most quests, since they are static and cannot respond to WHO the character is.

I could think about adding some gold, but I don't want it to become a gold-farm. Loot respawns would have to be handled a little differently than our stock system too.

Pere's dead on in that the Battlegrounds OLM (won't rule out other OLMs in the future) is the outgrowth of a non-epic-post-level-20 concept involving the renown system. It only costs $$ to hire soldiers though, I guess technically you could do it without henchmen, especially in a decent party.

Pere, could you let me know which dialogs need to be updated? You can even provide suggested new copy if you like.

The main things are the oaths of allegiance. I do have some ideas on them, but I'll have to run an unaligned character through there to see them again, transcribe them and then fiddle with them. Seeing as its Thanksgiving and I'm about to head out to my folks place for the feast and then I'm off to work, I probably won't get to it until sometime Friday.
