Crafting Questions

Post by oaknott »

The Craft Magical Arms and Armour feat allows armour and shields to be enchanted.
Does the same feat allow boots and/or helemts to be enchanted?

The craft Weapons skill allows a great many weapons to be crafted either from exotic materials or with bonuses to hit and damage.
Can these be combined? For example: would it be possible to create a +2 cold iron scythe using only Craft weapon skill and the appropriate moulds and ingredients without having Craft Magical Arms and Armour feat and withut casting any spells?

No, there's another feat for other item types: Craft wondrous items.
Can these be combined?
Yes, but...
For example: would it be possible to create a +2 cold iron scythe using only Craft weapon skill and the appropriate moulds and ingredients without having Craft Magical Arms and Armour feat and withut casting any spells?
No. The skill lets you craft non-magical items of different materials, but that's all. Enchantments need the appropriate feat and spell.

It is possible to craft a weapon/armour/shield of a certain material and then enchant it with a +x and/or elemental damage.

If you read this list: viewtopic.php?f=33&t=2043 it tells you what skills/feats are needed to craft each item.

Items in grey are valid items under the system script-wise but are not valid items in fact because the necessary reagents aren't legally available in Dasaria.

Arkalezth and Wired, thank you for your replies.

Arkalezth;
I do not think that you are right;
Craft wondrous items feat does not list any boots or helmets as craftable items but it does name everything else that can be enchanted (robes rings, amulets etc) so I do not think that that feat can be used for helmets and boots. I will experiment though to check when I have the feat.

Also I have crafted +1, +2, and +3 armour and weapons using the blacksmiths workbench, smithing hammer, craft weapon or craft armour skill and the appropriate ingredients but only with mundane ingots and planks (iron and wood) but not exotic materials like ingots of mithral, planks of zalantar and wyvern hides for example. I have tried.

Have you actually crafted any boots or helmets?

Wired;
On the page you link to, the craft magical arms and armour feat list does not specify what can be crafted only what the effects are., eg Greater elemental resistance, or +1 attack or whatever but there is no actual list of which items these effects can be crafted onto. I know these work on armour and shields as I have tested pretty much all of the recipes. I cannot get any of these enchantments to take on boots or helmets.

There are masterwork boots available for sale in the game and I am fairly sure I have seen masterwork helmets or hats too but I will have to check. These masterwork items all say that they are suitable for enchanting, or something like that, in the item description but I have not been able to enchant them at all so far.

All I really need to know is whether boots and helmets can actually be enchanted, if so, I am content to work out the recipes on my own as I have done with all the rest.

I meant that Craft wondrous items is needed to craft anything which isn't a weapon/shield/armour - assuming that it can be crafted in the first place. If boots or helmets are not on the list, I don't think you can craft them. Even if you could, I don't think they would be better than what can already be found in game anyway.

Arkalezth, thank you again for taking the time to reply.

What you say is, I am sure, true of the original NWN2 crafting system, but do you know if that applies in DAS 2?

Das 2 has it's own custom crafting system and many things in it are different from the original NWN2 crafting system. Are boots and helmets armour? They are sold as armour and I would argue that by most definitions they are, but that is just my opinion, not necessarily fact. I do not actually know if they count as armour in respect of this crafting system. The fact that masterwork boots (and I think headgear) are available in game would imply one of two things, either

1 these items are craftable (which I hope is the case) or
2 these items have been left in the game by mistake. (Which I think is unlikely, given the skill of the building team and that these items are for sale by a number of traders, not just popping up randomly in the loot pool)

What I would like to know, from someone who really knows the DAS 2 crafting system, is whether boots and helmets can or cannot be crafted/enchanted, and what skill or feat is needed to do this. That information would have to come from someone who has successfully crafted these items or someone from the team who was involved with the crafting system being implemented.

Failing that, a post to say "this information is not made public knowledge" from the team would do, although I would be surprised, given that in every other category of item you can craft, each item is specifically listed. It's only the list for craft armour and weapons feat that doesn't say specific items, only the effects are listed. Some of the effects listed match with boots available in the loot pool.

I don't want recipes or any further information other than whether these items can be crafted and what skill or feat I need as a great part of my play, and a greater part of my roleplay with this character is centred around finding those recipes. It would be nice to know this as the information will affect my character's build and my choices on levelling up. At this stage errors in levelling up would be very frustrating and time consuming to remedy.

If they are craftable, the feat used is most definitely Craft Wondrous Items, because helmets and boots aren't by the game definition arms nor armour. Otherwise gloves, gauntlets or bracers would be considered armour as well, no? However, I doubt they are craftable in the first place.

I don't think it's a spoiler to point you at stores that sell crafting items.

You'll see stuff for sale there that will give you a big fat hint at how you make some of this stuff.

MaoOn and Wired, thank you for your responses.

Where do you get this definition from? Definitions such as this from the game itself would be very useful.

My researches up until now have been entirely in-game and in-character. I am not at all familiar with the original games crafting rules nor with the toolset, are these definitons in either of those? Since both boots and helmets are for sale in the same category as armour and shields they are, at least by the vendors definitions, armour but this does not mean that they are for the purposes of crafting.
MaoOn wrote: I doubt they are craftable in the first place.
Boots clearly must be craftable as the masterwork boots for crafting are included in the game. I agree that it is very doubtful that helmets are craftable. I cannot now find headgear in the shops that is listed as masterwork and I am not at all certain in retrospect that I ever did. I will however continue to look, for the sake of being certain.

Thanks for the pointer, I will look again at each vendor to see what I may have missed. I am really only familiar with what is on offer in Cear and in Morrel, I will look further afield.
