Potions need some work?

Over the past few weeks i have noticed that potions are being abused, and that it seems quite dull that a person can take 15 potions at a time to heal themselves.. I understand this is a alternate universe and magic exists but there are still basic physics involved with chars, especially if we wish to stay true to Roleplaying. A character who is in the middle of a fight that stops and can take down 12 bottles of cure medium seems like quite a little eccentric dont you think ?. a great example of this was with (darksteel ingot) i belive i pronounced it correctlly? he was able to keep running and zoning , or just stand there and drink nonstop till full and rinse and repeat.

I understand what people are going tosay about this next part but the problem is it still is true. We want this server to be played on as if it were real. we have jail we have people trying to bounty hunt, we have people accusing others of heresy. so shouldnt we keep it real when trying to drink a gallon of liquid in 10 seconds while trying to kill something ?

I belive a simple solution to this over use of potions would be either a timer places on the potion based on how powerfull the heal is , or perhaps a system were if you drink to much perhaps you get *nausia* just as if the spell had been cast on you. This would stop people from chain potioning and taking quite a bit of fun out of things.

i hope ya all dont just spam with why this isnt a good idea , or maby you agree with it. but please give points for either ends of why you feel things have goten out of control or vice versa .

Not a good idea:

1. Combat is already not "realistic" there is no down time due to combat injuries.

2. We already have a rest timer.

3. Potions are magical so physics don't apply.

4. If we had potions of full heal, then one potion would do the job instead of 12.

5. Combat needs to be fluid and fun and with the strength of the spawns everyone gets injured, not being able to use potions would fall into the category of not fun.

I agree potions are over used as well as charms. Priest classes are hardly needed in a group in MOST circumstances. Potions of barkskin, bulls str, and other buffs last longer on a melee class then if cast by a Priest. BUT if a priest uses the same potion or charm, it wears off in a few minutes! :?

A warrior class loaded with potions and heal packs can be a one man wrecking machine. No cleric or druid needed

I do agree that it is a bit absurd quaffing down potions in the middle of battle but honestly as quick as your health drops if we didnt we would all face multiple deaths in a short span of time. I can count the number of times a cleric has healed me on one hand in the past 11 levels...

Not sure if many of you have been caught in a death loop where you respawn and there are 3 enemies waiting to kill you as soon as you appear but i find that to be a bit absurd as well and without said potion swilling it would be alot worse.

Alot of the time on my monk i try to play ghetto cleric using heal kits on other party members and even with them drinking potions sometimes its not enough.

Honestly im not sure there is an easy answer since cleric heals tend to be so slow casting that alot of the time even they use potions instead. If we all sat around and waited for a healer centric group we would be twiddling our thumbs alot and due to most 10+ areas having multiple creatures attacking at once soloing without potions would be impossible.

I guess what im trying to say is i have no friggin idea what im talkin about. *grin*

Just wanted to add as well that heals are touch attack based and sometimes you simply cant get to someone to heal them due to there bieng some very tight spaces throughout the game.

What ever happened to using a potion being a full round action that provokes an attack of opportunity? Seems that fewer potions would be used since the whole fight would involve drinking potions and dodging whacks. I don't suppose there is an option to retreat or run?

Seems to me that there is something fundamentally broken here, and it's on the developer's side, again.

I don't use Clerics, buff spells, or potions when I play. I've been playing the game long before these "cheats" (meaning buffing spells and potions)ever existed. so this is the first time I heard about the problem. Perhaps our friends at obsidian should hear about the duration problem between different classes.

... Am I the only one who never uses potions?

Because it's never been a full round action. It's a standard, I think, although it does provoke.

Potions should be (in my opinion) an ultra-rare commodity that one would think, "Do I REALLY wanna waste this one potion I have in this situation?".

Having so many heal potions and buff potions available allows the stronger melee characters to charge into battle without much consideration for danger. I remember playing NWN1 on a hardcore rule server (perma-death) and you had to mortgage your house if you wanted any potions at all (except for large treasure drops).

It definitely takes away from wanting to have healers or mages around, since you can buff yourself. There's certainly no shortage of money in the game.

I do really think a drastic reduction in potions will encourage fairer game for magic classes, better group dynamics and etc.

The problem with changing this is that without potions a cleric or druid is a one man wrecking machine, and everyone else needs them, while they don't need everyone else.

All potions does is allow a fighter or barbarian the same level of wrecking-ness as a cleric or druid.

If a change to potions does come in nearly everyone will have to be a cleric or druid....Or sit around waiting 2 hours to find one so they can go adventuring.

Most of the cleircs/druids now don't even heal. I have a bard charecter and people are amazed that I do mostly healing. Most clr/drds use their spells to buff themselves so they can be wrecking balls. Don't think I have grouped with a healer yet.

Instead of arguing and finding fault, let's see some suggestions for fixing what you see as a problem. Something constructive instead of destructive. To players as well as people who try to keep this game fun...

I try to play using as few potions/buffs as possible. I know from experience that there will be some situations where its possible to have all your buffs stripped from you at once. If you come to rely on them you are left helpless when they are gone. If you can survive without them you are better off.

It seems a bull strength (5) potion is intended to last as long as bull strength cast by a 5th level character. This works as intended when a caster class uses them (about 10 min+/-). When a non-caster class uses them, they last about an hour or so.

actually I think it might be all casting classes. My bards charms wear off in a minute or two on my monk they next to permanent until I rest. Not sure if its casters or just something weird with differetn characters but I noticed it tonight while I watched a team mate refresh his charms 6 or 7 times while my original ones were still up on my monk.

I wouldnt be surprised if potions are buggy. Perhaps obsidian will fix it in a patch.
