Potions
Potions
I guess I missed the post, but it seems potions are very different now. It appears that they regenerate you over time instead of heal you outright.
I do have an opinion on the matter, and some of the things I say may or may not have already been addressed. That being said, I feel that, though new, I have been a valid player, played by the rules, and dedicated a fair amount of time to the server; thus I voice a concern.
I have three PCs thus far, but only two worth mentioning. I played Fox Van Sand for sometime who is currently an 8th level Druid, 1st level fighter. I am currently playing Xavier Skyblade who is currently a 6th level fighter. I have found, the last week, that though saddened, I can no longer play on this server.
The changes in the potions have made it virtually impossible for my fighter to survive in this world. I had quite a few potions on Xavier that appeared to be left from the old potion script - they healed a set amount immediately. However, after an excursion down with Bugbears I had exhausted all of my potion stock. Now, I rarely post on the forums, not because I am not a community oriented player, but because I feel I need to spend some amount of time learning the server and the community before my voice needs to be heard. That said, I was not aware that there were any changes to the potion script. So, I went to the apothecary and did notice all the different types. I realized there must be something new about the potions, but I was not aware of what.
Buying 10 stacks of 10 of the Cure Moderate Wounds (II), I spent 600 gold per stack and quickly exhausted all of my gold. I thought to myself, hey I need them anyway, so I might as well buy all that I can now. Trying to make a long story short here, but failing miserably... After a brief encounter with an Orc and several other baddies, to which I died in every encounter, I quickly realized that I was not going to be able to survive here any longer and that the changes in the potions were not for me. As our astute leader once put it, if you do not like the food served at the dinner party, you can decline the invitation...
The potions I bought cost 60 gold per potion, and healed 2 hit points per round for what seemed, (though I have not recorded it) approximately 5-6 rounds. I cannot drink these things fast enough in combat nor heal fast enough to stay alive. I am amazed I have not seen others with the same dilemma. Are there old potions still around that you can buy that I am unaware of? I understand that a Druid or a Cleric could make potions, but then, you run into the complexities of buying potions from a player who may or may not be able to accomodate your need or order size or scheduling.
The fact of the matter is this: I rolled a figher. I would like to play a fighter. (Someone in game told me to roll up a Druid to solve my potion problem. Have one. Stopped playing him because I wanted to play a fighter.) The potions simply cost too much and do too little. This is a significant hindrance on the part of several melee characters.
If there is another solution to this problem, I would welcome a response, other than that, thank you all for your time, this is a been a great server to play on, but as changes come and go, you will lose and gain players. Unfortunately, I feel this server no longer for me, sadly, because of such an arbitrary change.
Cheers.

This is where it was first announced. The old type potions do still drop as loot.

While I feel your pain and understand your frustration, I will tell you that the potion change can be overcome by a change in tactics. It forces me to move through the areas a bit more carefully, and to use both potions and healkits. I wish that instead of leaving you may try some of the ideas that are sure to be suggested when more people have read your post

I actually didn't read the majority of your post, but I can guess at your problem, and I'll just say I like the idea of not being healed instantly. Firstly, it makes clerics more useful, secondly, I always thought the idea of grievous bodily wounds disappearing instantly a little unusual.
Also, I think we'll eventually see potions of critical healing I-III, so I don't think fighters/melee'ers should fret too much.

I am pretty sure they are already around and well they don't help much as when drinking one causes an attack of opportunity and if you are taking 15 to 30 points of damage at a hit....well you might as well stop trying to drink them and run. You might at least get a few steps closer to that door that always shuts just as you get there. Also, I think we'll eventually see potions of critical healing I-III, so I don't think fighters/melee'ers should fret too much.

To e'Kieron:
The new potions makes a good difference I think. Healing is still possible, but no you wont be able to solo everything like before when it was just a question of how many potions you could carry.
A priests healing is more in demand now. And the old potions still drops as treasure making loot much better in general. When you level there is usually some quest you now will be able to solo, but also new quests you wont. For those you will need party up, but in time you will also be able to solo those.
If you decide to play on Dasaria in the future then you're always welcome party up with one of my characters
. If not, then be safe and I hope you find a server which suits you better.

I don't really think that we should be making Clerics be in more demand; they're already the most poweful class in the game, right?
Also, I want to point out the AI change that came with 1.05. It's made the Bugbears a LOT harder to survive. In the pre-1.05 days, you could use a ghostbane charm to resist the shamans' confusion spells, and they'd cast confusion on you 2-3 times while you killed them. Now, they seem to spam cast Magic Missile and Flame Arrow, which can do a lot of direct damage to you in a pretty short amount of time. You need other things to resist these attacks, like the Resist Energy spell.
The bugbears have become a lot harder since 1.05, largely from the amounts of direct damage now being dished out by shamans, but I haven't noticed a significant change in other areas since then.
I basically like the healing potion change, but I still think (I mentioned it in the other thread) that potions of Cure Light Wounds should be available in stores. This is largely for new/low level players. Cure Light Wounds potions can't be that overpowering, can they?

Forget the Bugbears, The other night a party of 4 including one of my chars tried to make it through the monastry, yes one of them was either a cleric or had Rez scrolls. The bit just before the end boss is where my char the highest lvl of the party fell 5 times in their and others fell a lot more often, we didn't even manage to complete it because they respawned before we could heal after we defeated them the first time and had to pick our trader friend up off the floor.
It was really frustrating and one of our party lost enough xp to loose a lvl but we all had fun,

I can relate to and understand all that you've said, E'kieron. Believe me, my main character Vay (also a pure fighter) has been having a significantly more difficult time since the change went into effect. However, as was already suggested, perhaps a slight change of tactics is in order, along with a reevaluation of your character's particular strengths and weaknesses.
Trust me... with a fighter, you're still going to have the best (or at least close to the best) chances of anyone around, IMO, so don't throw in the towel yet. Personally, I've been dealing with it by stocking up more on heal kits (which although unpredictable, are more effective if in the heat of combat), and keeping hold of any old style potions I find in loot for emergencies. Keep in mind that you can find the old style potions as loot drops at every difficulty level... not just high level treasure drops.
Also, as Sabre said, I'm a whole heck of a lot more careful than I was before... moving through areas slower than I used to. Also, partying up helps tons... if you're not the only target, then that swarm of bad guys is not necessarily all going to rush straight at you the moment you round the corner. I've found that this has been a great RP catalyst, personally... and Vay's met lots of new characters out of a necessity to cooperate to achieve goals.
I hope you'll stay and give it another chance. I promise that it's not impossible to progress, as I've been slowly gaining experience... sometimes in ways I wasn't necessarily planning to. Best of luck, and I hope to see you around still.

I second this. I do like the potion change, although it makes soloing, something I enjoy sometimes, more difficult. I thought cure light wounds should be available for lower levels too because they become obselete once you progress far enough.ErictheRed wrote: I basically like the healing potion change, but I still think (I mentioned it in the other thread) that potions of Cure Light Wounds should be available in stores. Thank you all for your posts. I appreciate your response, and have decided that I have two options given the fact that I enjoy playing here.
I can either make a new character on a new server, or I can make a new character here that solves the problem. My bread & butter character is a cleric. That was the original issue. I have never played a fighter all the way through. I have many, many clerics on other servers or through other games and I just did not want to play one at this time. *shrugs*
I am going to make a cleric and play it here, see how that goes...
Cheers.

Or you could group with someone who heals.
Potions are a purely Solo solution to problem.
The way potions were before were overpowered, it basically made classes LIKE Fighter (Who don't need to rest, cause they have very few skills that need to be rested to claim victory in combat) last for as long as they had potions.

Maybe we could make light potions availiable in stores since they tend to be only fairly helpful to new people, but you could still make moderate and critical healings as rare drops couldn't you? I mean it would be pretty awesome to get a drop of 5 or even 10 critical healing... it would also require the person to save these "instant-heal" potions they found out in the wilds for emergency situations, which is what they were really supposed to be used for anyway... not to be abused in every situation so you can clear the area out faster.
