when i moved to CA i couldnt believe how small squirrels were compared to the east coast. They used to get into every single contraption we bought that promised to keep them out of the bird feeder. They jumped from the roof onto it, shook it at its base to make the seeds fall to the ground, and even flung themselves at it to knock seeds out. Very fun to watch.

How to keep squirrels out of birdfeeders:

(1) Mix cayenne pepper in with your bird seed. It doesn't harm the birds,
and the squirrels hate it.

(2) Tilt-A-Squirrel - this is the funniest thing to see since sliced bread. Put
it on your smaller birdfeeders, and the squirrels will only try it a few times
before they stop going to that feeder completely. Its a little half-circle
cap that goes on top of the bird feeder, and won't hold the weight of the
squirrel. (Then again, I live in the midwest so who knows how heavy
squirrels are other places).

Don't forget to feed your birds in the winter! Not all of them fly south!

Just zap the squirrel with the defib.

Squirrels are wily buggers. I'm convinced that some of the ones in DC are KGB/CIA trained, because they do some utterly ridiculous things to get the birdseed.

You should see the ones on Ohio State's campus. They get fed, and they're not supposed to get fed, so they can do some unique things to try to get your food if you're around them eating something they want. I've seen them beg like dogs before, which is a true cujo moment.

There is a video out there somewhere that has someone who setup one of those balloon slingshot on a catch with some birdseed in the pouch. He waited for the squirrel to come and eat the seed and then hit the catch sending the squirrel flying.
