Is vista worth the upgrade yet?
For those players here that have purchased/used the operating system, is it worth the upgrade? Should I wait? Should I just get it anyways and dual boot?

remember when XP first came out? fairly disastrous
in a few years most comps will have VISTA. IMO wait five years for rich people to work out the bugs for us, then download it.

As I had it explained to me;
Vista is okay to have right now. Many companies had the opportunity to adapt to Vista for almost a 3/4th of a year now. Some companies have written their updates, other companies just haven't bothered to write updates and are going to call it quits, so to speak. The companies who still haven't written their updates untill today, probably wont write it anymore either. This will result in certain soft or hardware not functioning properly anymore but this is a choice made by the creator of the soft/hardware. They will either quit or produce something new that -will- cooperate with Vista properly.
As Lono said; a year from now most PC's and Notebooks will be having Vista as operatingsystem. So eventually you'll have to go for it anyways, but wait for the bugs. Don't wait for the program updates and driver/hardware issues caused by external sources (other then microsoft) though.
Aside from that, Microsoft is still spitting out new versions if I'm correct.
The best thing to go for right now is Windows Vista Home Premium. It's got all specifications and is the most regularly sold at the moment because it's the broadest package. Don't cut out on expenses on Vista if you're going to buy it legally, because cutting on expenses means cutting on possibilities and -then- you might aswell stick with XP.

it would be cool to have more than 3 gig of ram, which is XP's max.
I believe vista can hold quite a few gigs of RAM, and DDR2 is dirt cheap right now.

If you only want to dualboot, try ubuntu instead. It's pretty easy to use. And easy to configure (unless you have Radeon's GPU)
As I see it, there is only 1 reason to upgrade for vista: New DX10 games.
So to get the benefit from that you need videocard that supports it (NVidia's 8XXX Or ATI 29XX).
If you have the highend videocard, you also should have really new comp as Vista is very resourse hungry. So if you don't have like the newest possible comp, don't get it! It will be downgrade.
(Like dualcore 6600 or better and 2 gigs memory).
Some specs to compare (Vista's numbers are browsed form the net, as I haven't ever used it):
Memory usage (memory reserved)
XP, idle: ~128M
Vista Idle: ~512M
Vista has built in 64 bit core, so if you have 32 bit processor, it will run, but it's like someone would've poured some glue inside of your comp.
So in short: If you have brand new comp & High end video Card and have time to fight with the new OS and got spare money for buying it.. Go can do it. Altho I won't recommend it.

Well.
I'll put it this way. My mom got Vista, installed it on her comp and had to call Microsoft to have a tech help her put it on - and she used to do technical support for a living with computers. The activation of it kept having to be reset, but she does love her Vista.
I've heard that a lot of things aren't compatable (game wise), so, you might want to investigate into that first.
I flatly told her there as no way in you know where that she'd put it even near my comp.

Afterall, Worms3d doesn't work on 1440x900 XP either...Vahene wrote:I've heard that a lot of things aren't compatable (game wise), so, you might want to investigate into that first.

I got Vista Home Premium. Whatever that means.
It seems like XP with a makeover. And a few gadgets on top. It will be good to have later on, but right now I just waiting for my first Vista virus

Also keep in mind there's rumors of a new Microspank OS coming out around 2009 or 2010. Is it really worth going through the headache to upgrade to an OS that they might be replacing that quickly? I'd say no.
Well, I'd recommend waiting until 2008 to upgrade to Vista anyway. By that point the new OS rumors should be clarified one way or another.

Vista seems ok on a stand alone system or if all the other systems on the network are Vista as well. It can be a pain though working with a network that has a mix of Vista and XP or 2000. If it's worth the upgrade I am not so sure it has a few nice features but nothing I would pay that much money for unless I had a brand new video card for the new DX and more ram already waiting. I get a free copy from microsoft though so I went ahead and installed it =P

I noticed Windows Update downloads updates to increase software compatibility, so that helps with games if they do that every so often. Also, I heard rumors of Vista SP1 coming out this year or next year. Or you could wait to see what XP SP3 will be like this fall or winter.
All in all, I likes my Vista. The only game that didn't work for me was Morrowind, but I don't care so much.
(Or you could just hold off until Windows Vienna in 2009 or whatever date it'll be delayed to)

XP was purdy too, they all look like Tomytronic My First computer - I run it in windows 98 mode, max speed, no frills. If i want to look at something pretty i download from http://www.munchmy*£%^£.blah.
But then I have issues with the techno world and its mincey designs these days.
My missus has vista premium running on her not so top of the range machine and not one problem has been noted in 2 months of use. So I suppose its luck of the draw in some cases too

I don't feel any shame, I won't apologise
