Amen to that.

I'm glad someone said it.

At least you people have heard it called that way... I haven't heard that since... now.

Heh, Im so used to calling my characters "toons" that its second nature. But then again, It makes me scream to hear "pwned" and "l33t", so I can understand you hating "toon". I will try to keep it in moderation, and use it only as a torture device.

Its WoW-speak. Involving WoW, its not so bad, because the characters do indeed look like cartoons, and nobody actually roleplays, at least, not as we define RP over here. Here, NWN characters don't have the same cartoony style to them, and people do roleplay, making the little pixels and data that we play as more than "toons" but actually characters.

Daemon, that sounds fair, oh, and welcome to Dasaria.

People are realy quick with blaming WoW for everything *grins*

Toon is a pretty commonly used word in Sci-Fi books as reference to virtual characters or advertisements as well, for quite some time. I wouldn't scoff at everything that doesn't fit into your normal use of words, esp. on ooc messageboards - using the term "toon", which evolved from "cartoon", for virtual characters is imho a change I can easily relate to and does not have a "downgrading" touch to it.

For me it even feels more passionate to say "my toon" instead of "my character", for whatever weird reasons.

Never used the term before though (:

I can honestly say I've never heard this term until now, but I whole-heartedly agree as well that referring to your characters as such leaves a lot to be desired IMHO.

Who cares? It shouldn't bother anyone what someone wants to use to refer to their online characters on a message board. Now, if you use some weird term in the game, I'd understand the funny looks and people slowly backing away from you... :)

I first heard it back in EQ1 and Despised it even back this. It's just always sounded dumb do me. My avatar is usually referred to as my character or simply his name

I think it makes perfect sense... In City of Heroes, because then people ARE a cartoon character.

All other uses are wrong.

I think the idea behind naming characters 'toons' has something to do with cartoons, which might come from the dictionary definition:

1. drawing depicting a humorous situation, often accompanied by a caption.

Well, they're 3d characters so they aren't drawn, but we do often end up in humourous situations and we are usually accompanied by a caption. In that respect, I suppose they're right.

But then, not really. My character may have some of the characteristics of a rat, but she ain't no dang floppy-eared, high-pitched, red dungaree-wearing excuse for a mouse.

I never heard of this term before... but I must admit "Toon" does sounds a bit "noobish". But it is understandable that some people might use such term.

Hmm "noobish".......

Don't wish to pick a fight but I'd rather see the term "toon" than that godawful gamerspeak.

As for those that haven't seen it before, it originated in "who Framed Roger Rabbit."
It was as stated a slang version of cartoon.

Honestly, why are you (as in everyone) even discussing this?

Let him call his character a toon if he wants you. I'll call mine, like I just did, a character.

You can refer to yours as "sweet jeebus of doom" if you want. Honestly.
