The Character Builds Thread

Believe it or not, some of us do like to play the G in RPG sometimes, and some of us very much enjoy the mechanics behind DnD and NWN, so why not have a thread where we can all discuss and pool together our knowledge of character builds to learn and give advice all around? I personally enjoy the numbers behind a character a lot, makes for some great problem solving and thinking to produce a character that works.

Of course I'm sure many people have secrets that they don't really want to share and I do too, but I thought I'd start off with a build that I'm pondering at the moment, a Warpriest. I've already got my bard/duelist sorted and there's no need to post all his bells and whistles. ;)

But anyway! The Warpriest, you add it to your Cleric (or Paladin) levels to gain the highest base attack bonus per level, aswell as still progressing in your spells, but just slightly less then a full Cleric would do. I'm thinking of 10/10 Cleric/Warpriest. This gives 17 BAB so you get 4 attacks per round, ( can make it to 20 with divine power ^^) and the spells equivalent of a 19th Cleric. This sounds very solid and well rounded. You have ultimate versatility with your spells all the way upto level 9, while still having a base of 4 attacks per round, aswell as 3 free hastes a mass heal and a very juicy fear aura. :D

Another variation I thought of though would be to maybe go 10/8/2 Cleric/Warpriest/Divine Champion. You would have the same spells as a level 17 Cleric, you still got 9th spells on only 1 of them, but you also get an extra feat and your Cha bonus to your saves. I think this can work well with the fear aura, as the DC for that increases with your Cha so having a decent score there effects more areas now. The decision though with this build is do I go for 20 Wis or 18 Wis and pump up that Cha a bit more or maybe a bit more Str? Having only 1 9th spells doesn't really seem worth the extra 2 Wis points (I wouldn't leave it on 19 Wis, having them at odd numbers is a waste).

Anyway that's just the build I'm pondering at the moment. I thought we could use with a thread like this to discuss ideas we had on how to make some of our characters tick in game and to also learn off all the smart players we have on here. There are loads of other builds I have up in my head at the moment too such as a Str based Monk build, a Frenzied Beserker build that will get +39 damage 0.o and Druid build as in NWN2 they look like they are going to wreck up the place with that ability to cast in Wildshape and become immune to crits!

Anyway, happy building everyone!

Edit: I just read over the NWN2 version of Divine Champion and they don't add their Cha bonus to saves but instead gain +1 at 2nd level and every 2 levels after till 10th. I think I'll just go with the 10/10 Cleric/Warpirest. :D

Why are you stealing all my ideas.

Umm... And Back to the thread.

Well, I was personnally wondering what type of Rogue build you have on your mind, I was thinking along the lines of a 9 rogue 4 fighter and 7 weaponmaster I'm sure you can fill in the blanks.

that is if the Basic skills are still set at the same levels to those of NWN1

Weapon Master in NWN2 is not as good as it was in the last game. The extra threat for being a WM does not stack with keen or Imp Crit anymore, so really the only purpose for going WM is to get the extra multiplyer, and if you really want that then you only need to take 5 levels.

The old 16 Rogue/4 Fighter works very well I think. You get 4 attacks per round (not including your 2 handers), and a solid ammount of feats to play with. Though one of the new abilities makes it so that another rogue can only sneak attack you if he has 4 or more rogue levels then you do. So it's either an extra attack per round, or not getting sneak attacked and a higher sneak attack yourself. Your choice really. ^^

Where do you get all this information, lankycheese? Are you simply assuming that NwW2 will follow DnD 3.5 by the letter?

If NWN2 followed 3.5 by the letter, Weapon Master wouldn't have been included in the first place.

I think your idea for warpriest build is pretty good, lanky. I've been contemplating the same build for one of my characters... although I think my first character is probably going to be 20 ranger

I'll thank you for the link and gracefully disregard the comment. *Smile* Looks like I can have some good fun with this.

You're almost better going with a full fighter if you want a weaponmaster, this time around. I might do that rather than a WM. Since I've all ready gotten help on my rogue idea, I've also been fiddling with the rogue/Arcane Trickster or rogue/Shadowdancer lines as well (if we have SD and we haven't really heard we won't yet.. so why not go for it?). Anyone have any thoughts on where to place the most emphasis, stat wise?

The AT would probably be 5 Wizard/5 Rogue/10 AT, while the SD would be 10/10 Rogue/SD.

For now it is safe to assume all classes are in if only for the simple reason that we will be more concerned with building the world instead of placing restrictions on it. In the early days, weeks and months however, if problems are found with certain races, classes etc, changes are likely to be made that are likely to affect builds based on certain preconceptions. We will try to be as accomodating as we can, but such things are always going to be difficult. All I can promise is that no changes will be made without significant discussion beforehand, and we will try to ensure they are done in the best interests of the server as a whole.

Fun build: Tiefling Warlock, because the concept just works. Assuming I don't find warlocks insanely boring to play. XD

Power-ish build: Human wizard. Because I like blowing things up.

I'll probably make a rogue...I'm curious to see how they interact with the Neverwinter Nine level 5 ability more than anything.

I'm thinking Tiefling Ranger/Assassin. It may sound a bit unorthodox but I think it'll work out neatly with the right build.

If that doens't work out or I feel I have the stamina for a second character, I may go with an Aasimar Paladin. There's something about a spallcaster/warrior that I like. Let's hope they both become a force to be reckoned with, eh?

I have a feeling we're gonna have our fair share of non-human PCs this time around.

Admittedly, the thought of creating a sub-race is frightening due to the cheese factor they had during the previous campaign. Now that they are legitimate races and not so "gimicky" (Not to say that everyone played their subraces gimicky, but the general consensus was that it was cheap to play one and you'd have a very hard time getting into the setting) anymore. It all boils down to how you RP it, too. Do you wish to play the son of the devil or simply a man who knows nothing of his demon lineage?

I'll probably go with the latter on both of my characters, but that's my choice as a player.

Sorry for derailing the topic slightly.
