To Toon or not To Toon, that is the question

Well I agree. Call your character what you will, it's a free interweb after all. Then that's not really what the thread is about - we're really just agreeing on how much we despise the people that do.Ludovic wrote:Honestly, why are you (as in everyone) even discussing this?
Let him call his character a toon if he wants you. I'll call mine, like I just did, a character.
You can refer to yours as "sweet jeebus of doom" if you want. Honestly.

playin CoV using toon seemed right cos I always knew the type of character as a cartoon, over here it gives me a dip into the modern world that my sword and sandle type character isn't a part of, so it detracts that tiny bit from the feel of the whole. but then I don't really care either way unless it was used as Tin suggested.

yeah its like Cancer, the Nazis or Saddam - poor thingsPeople are realy quick with blaming WoW for everything *grins*
I don't feel any shame, I won't apologise

When someone is speaking out of character about their various characters, I really couldn't care less what they call them. Toons, avatars, I dunno... puddings ( I can see it now: >OOC: My other pudding is a dorf warrior)
I'd far prefer to see "toon" used in ooc chat than to start seeing more "netspeak". I've verbally beaten guildies who use it too much. Just ask Jaysenir and Wesley...

Puddings is a fantastic term for our characters.

I made up the city my dwarf came from, but I don't know if that's the trend everyone follows, can I do that? Do I need to pick another city of birth? Can someone give me, and I am sure other newbies around here some guidance on the background of their puddings?
Thank you!

What's wrong with 'lol'? It means "laugh out loud", a way to express the fact that something someone said made you laugh. What are you going to type "Well, I laughed out loud" every time? Abbreviations are necessary sometimes, you know. If you can emote a laugh, OK, but you can't always do that. There is nothing wrong with calling your character a 'toon' either. You people need to come off it.Nightmist wrote:Know also that I rate it together with "lol" and will hate it everytime I hear it.Thank you!
My last MMORPG was Dark Age of Camelot, before that NWN 1 (but i can't remember much from NWN 1 except the basics of the game) so I'll tend to use "1337" speak on accident even while RP'ing sometimes you'll catch me... because Dark Age did have RP servers, but I tended to drift more towards the Regular ones for their larger population.

There is a big difference between "1337" speak and typing things like "lol". The latter are just abbreviations. The former is a way of typing that uses numbers and other characters to represent letters they resemble. This can certainly be annoying, however nobody really types like that, except to maybe name themselves in an online shooter or something.Deodeath wrote:I'll tend to use "1337" speak on accident even while RP'ing sometimes you'll catch me
I played DAoC for quite sometime (my first MMO), and let me tell you, I experienced some of the finest RPing I've ever seen in that game, even on the non-RP servers. Still the best MMO out there IMHO.Deodeath wrote:My last MMORPG was Dark Age of Camelot

Very true. It is not always possible to stay IC, especially in larger games like an MMO. As much as you enjoy RPing, there are some things you just will not be able to communicate properly unless you go OOC. Also, I enjoy meeting new people in online games, and to do that and get to know one another, you just have to be yourself in OOC chat.Kazak wrote:I played DAOC as well, Shaman (Midgard). I have to agree about RPing within that game. But you have to say, there were quite a few OOC conversations. It's a lot easier to go OOC in bigger games. I find it awkward to talk OOC within Dasaria.
Typically, when in-game...I'm almost always IC in my general chat, and am mostly OOC in Party chat, but I try to keep that to a minimum. That way, hopefully my character still adds to the 'atmosphere' of the game world when I'm playing, yet whatever group I am in can still make plans, discuss characters, bitch about crashes, etc in semi-privacy.
As far as "toons" or Leet-speak all that....I could really care less when it's not in general chat, where it can really be distracting. Role-assumption is actually more important to me than role-playing.
