I remember adoring my ColecoVision™. I think this was Nintendo's first incarnation. To this day, I have yet to meet anyone else who had one. This console gave me my first taste of RPGs in the form of Gateway to Apshai, an infinately replayable fantasy/adventure game that was basically an ugly Diablo. At the time, it was incredibly innovative, if not popular. This was 1982. Freaking 1982.

I'm actually seeing what I consider a plateau right now with video games. Perhaps not a new leaf, but at least a pause to the descent. I have considered there to be a definate Lull in the industry for many months now, seeing a variety of pretty games that lack ambition, imagination and zest. Games like Fear, which think they are breaking ground when all they are doing is re-making the same old thing. Just with better smoke and mirrors. I hate seeing things like what happened to Tomb Raider, happen over and over again with other titles.

I think the level of quality in video games is sub-divided, however, as RTS games, such as those made by Relic, truly have redefined the genre.

The social impact of Video-Gaming becoming truly mainstream is the same with the adoption of any new technology, tho. For a while, the market will be flooded with crap, just like Rock n' Roll or Coffee. Part of the hobby becomes being able to identify quality, not just admire it.

The trend for video-gaming to merge with cinema is bad. All a person has to do to confirm this is go to a few recent movies. Too much concern about dollars and not enough concern for integrity. Honestly, the more I see video-games attempt to affect us in the same way that movies do, the more I see the writing and plot in video-games suck. Cinema is meant to enlighten or entertain. Video games are meant to be plain, simple fun. Both are HUGE money makers.

I'm optimistic, despite the recent trend I have seen Obsidian once again attempt to get away with. The paramount importance that needs to be cultivated is treating it as though it were art, which the bigwigs at these production companies aren't likely to do. Video Gaming is much like an evolution of fine paintings to me, but my personal philosophy isn't probably widely shared. If the $$$ decison makers could effectively hire gamers who love gaming for gaming's sake to startle us with imaginative thought-process over Hardware potential, perhaps such a wise decision would lend well to the future of the industry.

Let's hope.

The main advantages to blue ray, as I see it:
1) You have to buy all your videos again
2) They get to release them with new and improved copy protection
3) They get to charge Phillips, Siemens, etc a licensing fee for making compatible products.

Great. Where do I sign up?

Yeah at least with hd-dvd you know all of your old cds and dvds are going to work, plus i think they even include the standard dvd version on the otherside of the hd-dvd disk. That kind of sounds like a winner to me.
I'm always right. I'm also a jerk. It's not my fault you can't get over the latter to see the former.

Hurray for Me!

Topic titles are like turn signals. They aren't for your benefit, but for the people around you.

I don't know about you, but I'm not willing to pay thousands of dollars to go from this to this.

I am not rich enough or crazy enough to hop on the newest technology as soon as it is available. Who still has laserdiscs?

For awhile? Rock 'n' Roll has been flooded with crap for 20 years now. When's that going to stop?
