But keep up with the ideas! Is anyone writting these down?
Hopefully the Admins are
Vahene, while I understand your doubts on a "judging system" for applications, you should consider that the possibility of bias is always there, in considering applications and even in judging a character's actions in-game. I have faith that if the system is implemented, the ones doing the judging will be fair.
Wasn't the whole point of application/password protection geared toward freeing DMs from the necessity of putting too much time into policing the server?
With the popularity of this world, how is an influx of application that will most likely result from such a set up going to help just that? It seems it merely diverts their time from one necessity to another (checking the applications)...
Personally, I cannot wait for the DM client to allow them in-game control, if only to gleefully take part in a lynching mob or two
Who is going to oversee the applications? Who will make the ultimate decision that 'they' think 'this person' shouldn't be on the server because they don't like how the person RPs? Or because they THINK the person won't be able to handle the campaign? Will bias against certain players in the first campaign enter the decision for the second?
As rhetorical as these questions are, I also think Rob is dead on. We've all complained about something or another on these boards, the new ones or the old, and I'm no exception to the rule. However, when it comes down to it, at the end of the day, the reason I haven't been playing lately is because of people playing 'vigilante', reading about it on the boards, and not wanting to see it in a game I've become so fond of, it would break my heart to have to leave it.
Don't get me wrong, I love this game, and the people I've RPed with are fantastic. However. When you take the risk of playing a character, and become worried that that character will be PKed just for existing practically, or forgetting to put a weapon away--it becomes not only absurd, but flat out rediculous for me to even try. It's ruining my game experience, and perhaps I need to flat out say that rather than dancing around it in my postings.
Playing a vigilante is fine--with a DM Client active. With more material existing in game, with a more finished product, not with what we have now. Things like this, and I'm using this as an example, so no one blow up on me, okay? Things like this are what's making it hard to police. DM's should be able to relax when online playing their characters, not have to stop every two seconds and tell 'youknow' to stop attacking Master Roggins because its freaking annoying.
I didn't mean to rant, but I personally would be against applications, because I don't think there's any way to do the process without being biased on one manner or another for or against someone.
If anyone does have a problem with what I've said, feel free to PM me.. it doesn't belong on the boards.

I think the main point of this is really just to make sure they understand the server rules, saves anyone being able to plead ignorance.

Swing a little more on the Devil's Dance Floor.
I'm not sure where I'm going with this yet.
I'm fairly new here and I'm still getting accustomed to alot.
However,
I like others may not have come to Dasaria when I stumbled upon it if it was passworded. NWN2 was too new at the time to deal with a passworded server. I would have just assumed that it was 'under construction' and PW'ed for it's own community and Devs.
However, as a leader of a Battlefield gaming clan for almost 3 years now I know what it's like to have to admin servers. We're constantly getting rid of smaktards.
We have a fairly strict set of guidelines that has both caused us grief AND brought people into our fold that appreciated how we ran our servers.
From my experience a password...
- Will Not keep out the 'smart' griefers. They will still need to be admin'd
If they REALLY want to they will lie there way into Dasaria and then have to be dealt with anyway.
- Will dilute the Dasarian Playerbase. I think the need for fresh players should be a priority. No one said it would be easy.
- Should be blatantly obvious. Both on the Home Page AND in the Download section AND in the ZIP file of the PWC download.
Reasons: Most griefers will move away from Dasaira if it's passworded anyway.
For those of us that really want to play it should not be hard to obtain.
People that are looking for a good community to Play will find Dasaria.
When they find it it should not be an ordeal to get a password. NWN2 is still too new to choke people off to it's Persistent Worlds.
Another suggestion:
Before Downloading the PWC have it go through a "Server Rules Acceptance" thread. The "acceptance" link would then bring you to the DL.
At least that way you know for a fact that people have at least 'looked' at the rules so when you do boot their a$$es they have nothing to stand on.
Whew...that was longer than I thought it would be.
I hope I haven't stepped on any toes.
Just as an update on the Frontier roleplay community... their passwording/application/bio acceptance process is starting to get a HUUUUGE backlog, since many people are trying to get in the server. Many appear to be decent roleplayers/rule-followers, but the team has not enough time to read through the bios and applications. Perhaps the idea of an application would just be horrendously painful.
I know that since Dasaria isn't listed as being a hardcore roleplaying server, bios would probably not be a good idea for the application, but a great increase of applications would end up as bad news.
I've stated multiple times in the past that i'm against the password and application process and I'm still sticking to my guns, but I understand where Jeh is coming from. I can only imagine what a headache it must be to be constantly disciplining when your trying to get building done.
If it's going to be locked down, asmuch as I hate the idea, another alternative not as severe as an application would be to send the password in the welcome message that is passed out when creating a forum username. Or if that isn't possible have a forum that isn't visible unless logged in that would have the password for the server. This way Devs wouldn't have to waste time sorting through applications, and it should at least help out a bit weed out the ones who are just out to seek trouble. At least while the server is in beta and a better solution can be found.
Unfortunatley there is no guaranteed way to screen players. ALFA had an application system in place at startup of NWN1 and players that really wanted to get around it found a way. Some people will say what they think you want to hear to get accepted and then act completely opposite ingame. I heard and read comments from alot of players on various pw's that they were not good at doing character writeups/applications, so they had a "friend" do it for them. Imo this really didn't accomplish anything except take up valuable time from the server's admin that is trying to wade thru a stack of applications and take people at their word in the application.
I would not have made my way here if it was passworded. I just looked at the list in PW Story and ignored everything in red and then checked out the websites of those in white. Although I also understand the need to do something as I was also killed 3 times in one day for no reason that I could tell so that type of thing might also drive off new players. Since that day though I have not been attacked out of the blue like I was and met some nice players so either I am no longer considered easy pickings or your efforts in keeping these people out are having some effect.
Don't be silent, Eowade. If you are killed and feel there was no roleplay reason for it, speak out. Speak to the person who did it, tell people in town about being attacked. Sometimes it can be accidental, too. Esp from a caster who forgets that their spells can damage players who aren't grouped.
Indeed. We are prepared to be ruthless with those hampering other players enjoyment of our world. But we are blind without information from the responsible players out there. Keep us informed and we will do all we can for you.
