Cost of CO-LOC'ing Dasaria II? - Can I donate?
Hey people..
Just wondering if the Admins have considered moving Dasaria to a datacenter or hosting facility. The ones using VMware are really cheap with great rates on bandwith..
Now if the users wouldn't mind coughing up a little $$ to help..
Dasaria would be able to handle alot of people.. I would think..
Would $1 to 5 a month from the majority work? hmm...
I'd pay $5 a month (which equals what..16 cents a day?)
If fact.. I'm gunna donate right now.. once I find the link..

Our issue right now isnt bandwidth. We arent scratching our current bandwidth. The problem is that crashes seem to be more common under a heavy population load, and seem to happen much more frequently over 35. We may try a stess test and see how we can handle things.
In the past we got a paid host and it worked out good until the money stopped coming in from the players and we were left with another monthly bill. We had to resort to reserved slots for donators and a bunch of other things that were not that tasteful to get the bills paid.
Jay Four, Wyv and Myself invested in a new server at launch and the location where the server is has a very nice connection. (we arent tightfisted and selfish with our time, effort or money, Dusty ;p) I would love to have to co-lo'd but I would probably need to have at least a year covered in donations before getting into a commitment like that.
I prefer to wait to ask for donations until we really need it. I have passed the hat a few times in dasaria's past for new forum servers or this or that, and we have always been blown away by the community response.
By all means please post your opinion in the poll, as it may affect our thoughts on the issue.

1. I might have the proper funds, once other-worldly funds are payed for, to donate to Dasaria, but . . .
2. I don't have the means to donate with. I can't use PayPal because I'm a minor, and I don't think my parents are about to let me; and I don't think it's exactly safe to send money through the mail.

I'd be happy to help donate for upkeep and a better connection, but a monthly fee isn't really what I'm looking for. That's almost too much of a pay for play system. I'd probably committ much more than what you'd get from a monthly fee, if it were a one time donation toward hardware/infrastructure that was owned by the DM's rather than payed out to a location.
Happy to help, if you put out the call Jeh. I feel almost guilty in having gotten to play Das I without a call to help since I was on later in the life of the campaign.

Elenia - Servant of the Gods, but which one?well the way I see it, even if it wasn't for a co-loc.. heck just giving the guy some funds to eat a cheeseburger while working on the mod... I dunno .. help offset a little of his electricity costs.. i dunno.. I'm sure he can come up with alot of reasons for a little cash .. every once in a while.. Co-loc he doesn't have to pay electrical costs.. they have redundant networks / power / support, ect.. anyhow..
Well .. once I find the donate link or have been given a paypal link, I'll start donating.. Just happy to add a itsy bit of support .. seems the least I can do, since I spent most of my NWN2 time playing here..
Dunno, I just feel the guys should get something for all the work they put into this, and since we all play it .. why not support it.. I paid $15 for 8 years to MMORPGs.. support sucked, constant kill stealing, Devs don't listen to anyone (or so it seemed), blah blah blah..
I don't mind $5 a month for something totally opposite of that, and something I look forward to going home and playing..
So forget the co-loc.. feed the guy.. lol
I shouldn't have to 'convince' people that it's worth $5 for a whole month..
Sorry but you guys know me, I get "passionate" about things.. hehe

Am happy to support a server with some of the most mature RP'ers, I've met in awhile.
Way to view it is Dasaria= few dollars or WoW (and all that entails)= More dollars.
I know where I'd rather put my money.
Tomar - WarPriest of Girru.
Deanna - Mage of crafting
Sera - Want help? seek elsewhere
Merido Oaken - Cry havoc and let loose the Hogs of War!

As Jeh stated, one time fee to cover the whole year cost is a safer bet to go for a deal like this. I'd be happy to give 50-60 dollars for this cause, more if needed if that would really solve the problem of server crashes, which I doubt.
As far as I understand the server is beefy enough now to support higher amount of people and the guys have enough bandwidth to triple the amount of people. So the cause must come from the crappy server code, that only Obsidian can fix. Basically coloc will not solve the crashing problems.
On the other hand, the server reset fairy is always there to give some loving to the server in the time of the BSOD. So I personally think it's a better way to host it locally and have some supervision on it. Once things smooth out and the server is stable enough that it can be managed remotely, then DMs can look at coloc.
But, either way I'd support the cause financially.

Some of the dasarians are a lot older than others and have ability to pay for it. I don't think you should feel guilty by any means if you wouldn't be able to pay. As Jeh stated in the past, he would not make Dasaria pay to play.
But passing the hat around would get people who could donate help the server and the DMs. I think the younger folks would help the server greatly by simply following the rules of the server and pushing the RP aspect through out Dasaria and let us old farts, fill the hat
