Saint Nicholas was a real person who existed in history. He was known for his giving and caring personality—this has continued in the form of Santa Claus, the loveable old fellow that visits all the children in the world one night of the year.

I was fortunate enough to make it to 13, too.

My parents taught me a valuable lesson, though. Saint Nicholas was real, and through Santa Claus he continues to be real. There is a Santa Claus, and that Santa Claus is the spirit of good ole' Saint Nick. This core belief, while different from its former childhood incarnation, remains intact—a belief in the gift-giving spirit of Saint Nick.

Your belief in Santa Claus isn't gone, Eve. It has merely evolved. Never stop believing in Saint Nick's loveable and selfless spirit, because that is what Santa Claus is.

What it taught me is that my parents are dirty rotten decievers and that you should never trust anything anyone ever says.

It's also when I started questioning other beliefs, such as the belief in god and the afterlife.

Thats when I started thinking:

Hey, maybe this whole "god" thing was sort of like the santa thing. Except, maybe the parent died before they let their children in on the joke. So like, 3000 years passed and they're still believing it. Suckers.

Bitter? Who, me?

Sure, you'll be bitter for awhile, but those feelings won't last.

You're a smart kid, Eve. You were probably piecing the pieces together long before you stumbled across that article—either consciously or subconsciously.

So you can either appreciate the lesson believing in Santa Claus offered, and cherish those years of belief, or discard all of those childhood memories as a giant lie.

What truth?

There is no santa.

It's a giant lie. Discard it as you would any other lie.

The older folks (40+) might remember that St Nick used to come on a different day to Xmas. The two being seperate so little kids wouldn't think Xmas was all about santa. Now the "Spirit of xmas" is some jolly fat man who hands out toys to kids he's never met.

It's not about the lie you were told when you were young. It's about the care, love and sweetness you were given in that lie. Your parents didn't lie to you because they wanted you to hurt, they lied to you because they wanted you to have a good time, to dream and be a child.

Sometimes I agree with lying. Because remember; whenever a child stops having dreams or using his or her imagination, the Land of Fantastica becomes a little smaller again.

Besides; who cares, you were happy with your gifts, no? ;p
