Or one of the smiths offer an apprenticeship quest?

You have to remember the Craft skills imply you know how to make the basics... so recipes should only be hard for the magic/uncommon/ancient/godlike items.

You have to remember the description of the Craft skill:

"You are trained in a craft, trade, or art," (PHB 3.5)

The craft skill implicitly states we've been trained. I would think some of that training would be how to make the basics.

Those are pretty good ideas. Simple, realistic, logical.

It should probably cost money, or require making him an assortment of items, that would not gain the apprentice smith financially. Learning a trade isn't free, and the toil required to learn and perform the trade should yield a tangible benefit, I.E. Better or more varied/specialized equipment. If a player weaponsmith knows there are Werewolves about, he might learn to make a silver sword that is especially effective vs. lycanthropes, maybe even as part of a quest. This sort of thing would really make crafting invaluable, if it were not just a 'quirky' talent that some characters have, but if it were really useful. Specifically useful to characters, not just fun/frustrating for players.

I miss smelting from Dasaria1. I did like how some items could only be created through multiple stages, and sometimes only with a second pair of hands.

Isn't the normal way:

Me "I would humbly request to become your apprentice."

Smith "Ok. You can be my (female dog) for a year and whatever you learn on the side is your apprenticeship."

Having a long chain of sidequests to slowly work up an apprenticeship would be great. Give players a token to record progress (so server crashes don't destroy your progress) and make it unpickable xD.

I think having the smith make you run errands and (later) make orders for him is not unreasonable and makes good economic sense.

No the actual way is.

Smith: You pay me to feed, clothe and house you.

Apprentice: Agreed.

How ever long it takes before the apprentice becomes good at the craft.

Smith: Excellent, you're a journeyman. Now get back to work, you're actually getting paid now.

Journeyman: Aye aye sir!

How ever long it takes before the apprentice makes a masterpiece.

Smith: This is a good piece, you've earned the right to be called a master.

Master: Hooah! Now I get to own my own shop!

------------------

I'd say the easiest way to simulate this (Usually 4+ years) time would be to (if you did quests) make the quests chains 3 hours long, no gold or xp reward and you have to pay the teacher every time you start one of the parts of the quest. And once you finish it you get a single token. And you need about 50 to become a journeyman equivalent.

The more I think about it, the more I think the best way to encourage experimentation would be to seed some sample recipes into the treasure feeders. Give people a starting point for the equation and see how far they go.
Draco - "Allow me to introduce myself, I'm a man of wealth and taste."
Lorcann - "BACON!"

Zat's really the problem.

We have no starting point to work from. I know for instance that you can use power essences on plain wooden bows and iron whatvers, but it dosen't do anything to anything above wooden bows or iron whatevers. Is it in the game? Or not? Who knows? Whoever does they aren't talking.

It's all very well and good to put something in the game, but without a method of accessing that it's just pointless given the number of possible combinations of items, and the rareity of the items.

The server is still in beta status. That means that things are still being added to the world, but it is not finished. Most of what has been suggested have been good ideas. But things don't get implemented overnight. And a lot of the current build team have other commitments right now, so don't expect to see a huge amount of momentum for a while. A lot of good work has gone into putting all the recipes in place. If it isn't worth the effort to try to work them out, then leave it until it is until the system is fleshed out a bit more. We will get to it eventually. I would love to see quests go in around crafting, to earn unique crafting components etc, but again, don't expect it anytime soon. None of what you say is falling on deaf ears. But complaining about how tough it is isn't going to get it implemented any faster.
It's just a game...

Hehe. I just feel better now that you posted.

I want to offer to help build the recipes but I need to go do some research on it before I commit to something I can't do. On the plus side I'm a programmer and fluent in the NWN toolset... I reckon it shouldn't be too difficult, just time consuming.

EDIT: Just skimming around looks good. I'll test it out in the next hour or so but I reckon I could totally do that... assuming you guys would have me :P

Combining essences?

Post by Bobzim »

Have any of you crafters out there figured out if essences can be combined to form the next higher essence (i.e., faint-to-weak or weak-to-glowing, etc.)?

I am trying to get my hands on some glowing essences but I have no idea if or where they drop.

I do hate to revive topics that have been left alone for some time, but I've a crafting-related question that I'd like a hint with, and this is ... a 'hit and tips' thread.

Anyway ... snowballs state in their description they're alchemical in nature. Shock rocks, too. These little goodies are neat to look at, but can I upgrade the regular ones to the improved/greater/perfect ones through any sort of means?

Or is that not yet available?

I've seen improved/greater/perfect ones around so yes, I would assume it is craftable.

They're also drops. I haven't actually made any from scratch, either, just found what I've seen.

Seeing as how they're not listed in the 'currently craftable items list,' I'm thinking they're not craftable. But I'd like confirmation before I either chunk away this collection of mine or go insane from trying out combination # 504.
