Forcing someone to have a book with the recipe would just harass those who like experimenting.

There is nothing wrong with not telling anyone anything... but in that case almost everything you do should yield SOMETHING. So through trial and error you find the recipe for a crummy breastplate.

Working off that (because the recipes make sense: increase the quality of the ingredients and the quality of the final product goes up) you then use better metals and make a normal breastplate. Then use some Mithril and really get crackin'.

I would be all for having something like that, but the world would have to have a vast assortment of misc. crafted items that essentially are failures but give the player evidence to look in the right direction:

Uses pine wood to make a breastplate:
You get Pine Breastplate:
Descript:

This piece of pine resembles breastplate, however the wood is flimsy and wouldn't hold up in battle.

The description gives you a hint at how to do better: Get better materials. Maybe next time this druid crafter will try ironwood or some other harder wood.

That would be an excellent thing to do... but it would be a TON of work :D

I'll also say: My enchanter would like to publish books detailing crafting recipes (via a Use, not examine, as then they wouldn't have to buy the thing :D ) and sell them.

Just out of curiosity. Has anyone managed to craft anything at all yet, using this trial and error method?

I finally managed to craft a +1 spear but that was after many hours of testing. The best thing to do is read the state of the tradeskills post and then the hints/tips post for clues. Above all, experiment with iron and wooden planks only.

There's a problem with this.

The recipes that work with iron and wood don't work with anything above them.

So you just wasted several hours for nothing, nobody is going to buy a vanellia +1 - +3 iron from you. That's drops territory.

so yea, back to square one.

Seriously, if you hate the crafting so much just go focus on something else until there are more quests, features, and hints implemented in game.

I may be wrong but I took the failure of recipes for non-vanilla materials as a sign that the blueprints for it were not in game yet. I methodically tested every combination of darksteel with all the reagents I could get my hands on with no success. However, there's no way to tell who's right until we get a response stating yes this is in or no it's not.

Well, that is a good point.

Patience.

I've experimented with iron + dwarven war axe molds + (other items) to make a simple magical dwarven war axe. Nothing seemed to work at all. I'm pretty sure I used all combinations of essences I had. Perhaps the dwarven war axe blue print isn't in the game yet?

When everything is coming your way, you're in the wrong lane.
