Keep crashing, need some advice...

Post by Forlorn »

This topic (although redundant) is mainly to address those who play on Dasaria that *don't* crash. Unfortunately I myself keep crashing (like 1 out of every 3 transitions going outisde) and I want to see what kind of system the non-crashers are running. Maybe there will be a pattern that could prove useful and I can fix my computer so that I crash less. So, for those who don't crash playing on Dasaria (or crash only to a very small degree), could you please list the specs of your computer and maybe offer some useful advice for those of us who are crashing like crazy? Thanks.

A lot of people who upgraded to 2GB of ram (from 1GB) reported less crashes.

Hmmm thats definitely more managable than a new video card, easier to install too...right now I have two 512 Kingstons...anyone recommend two more 512's of a different brand or should I get two more of the same kind? I don't want to spend too much money on RAM, maybe a few hundred at most.

it generally better to expand your memory with the exact same brand and model you are currently using.
I'm always right. I'm also a jerk. It's not my fault you can't get over the latter to see the former.

Hurray for Me!

Topic titles are like turn signals. They aren't for your benefit, but for the people around you.

They have devices to expand memory? My dad could really use that. How much does it cost? Hold on, let me write it down.

Actually it's better to have 2 chips than 4 chips of memory. I'd recommend getting 2x1GB sticks. It's not that much more expensive, but will give you better buck for your money.

What you should do is go to CompUSA and buy memory there locally. Then take it home and try it to see if it solves your problem. If it does, you can take it back to them and buy it somewhere cheaper online. They have 21 day open box return policy. Or if their price is close to online keep it.

But I already have two great kingston 512 chips. It'd be a waste if I bought two more 1 GB chips...I don't think I really need 3GB do I? Would 3 GB make that much more of a difference than 2 GB? I was planning on getting two more of the exact same 512 chips of kingstons that I already have to make my system from 1 GB to 2 GB.

Sell 512MB on ebay. Just use the 2x1GB chips

I am just saying, 2x1GB is a lot faster than 4x512MB

Ok I've never used EBAY before and have heard horror stories about it from my friends, plus I'm way too busy with school to learn, so I don't think thats an option. How about this - a compromise - buying two 1 GB chips, AND using my two kingstons for a total of 3 GB...would that be good?

It would defeat the purpose of getting 2x1GB for performance reasons.

Of course I don't know if getting 2x1GB is realy better, memory timings tend to get worse the large.

Check the price, if you can get 2x1GB do so. Test with 3GB and 2GB, you could even try selling the 512s at a local store or cheap to some friend.

Ok gonna go with two new 1 GB chips then. Will probably give the two 512's to my brother for his computer.

ram

Post by smitty71 »

FYI I also crash about 33% of the time when transitioning and im using 2 gigs of mem, 3.2ghz intel chip, with a Nvidia 6800gt card (which runs the game fine at about 35-90fps)

The same is reported from my friends that have faster machines with 7950 nvidia cards and 2gigs ram.

It's either a NWN2 problem or a Dasaria issue IMO.

Ok a little update on my part...

I went out to CompUSA and bought some RAM. They ran out of 512 chips so I bought two 1GB chips. The tech there said whatever my configuration, that 3GB total memory would be faster than 2GB, no matter what setup of chips you had in there. So I went home, installed the two 1GB chips giving a total of 3GB for my RAM.

Then I loaded up Dasaria and played for a few hours. What I found was, the crashing was a good deal less than before. In 2 hours of play, I only crashed twice. There was a third time but that was because my antivirus software popped up with a message right during a transition and messed up the loading. But other than that, in two hours of play I crashed 2 times. Before, in 2 hours I'd crash about probably 6 or 7 times.

So in short, I'm pretty satisfied. I think the loading time is a bit faster during transitions too. Would I recommend buying more RAM for those who crash alot? Maybe. Do it only if you can get it to about 3GB, which I think will make a difference. From 1GB to 2GB might not...and upgrade only if you have cash to spare. The two chips I bought were PNY and costed me 240$ US Dollars, which I think wasn't that bad. All in all, I hope my luck with crashing less endures over the following weeks and months, but I think it will.
