Actually Kell.. the most basic places in WoW require 5 people in a party. WoW is all about grouping from 5-40 people to do stuff. Not really a good insult for soloing content.Kell wrote:Are we playing NWN2 or WOW2 here?
What happened with grouping instead of soloing? Why's everybody soloing suddenly? Why's it needed?
That's not to say I am defending solo players. If you want to solo in a place made for group content then that's your own risk imo.

Soloing does not prohibit roleplay, as i see it. It's a rp server, and you can have a well know character (who is a soloer) just because you spent hours in the tavern, or acting as a merchant and etc...
I do have more fun when i'm in a group, but you can still roleplay soloing the places.
It doesnt mean, just because you're soloing, that you will ignore all the other players you met in dungeon.

Personally, I also enjoy soloing. Dispite my comments about the content being group-centric, I do enjoy trying to tackle areas alone sometimes, when playing my own characters. And I understand completely why a lot of you do too. We may see some more "solo-friendly" content sooner or later, I just don't know when. Right now, just feel very pleased with yourself if you do manage to solo that particularly difficult area or encounter that was meant to be tackled with numbers. We certainly won't ever discourage one type of play or the other.
A lot of times in the past, I have had DM/player encounters on a 1-on-1 basis, because I have happened to see someone out there, just doing their own thing. Sometimes its just because they want to go out and kill stuff without all that roleplay baggage, in which case I have spiced things up for them by varying the encounters. Other times, they have grasped the opportunity to roleplay an encounter out for an impromptu, improvised mini-event with them. Hopefully, eventually, everyone will have something to do, no matter what playstyle happens to take their fancy on that particular occasion. We will try to do our best to accomodate it, within certain boundaries.

It's just a game...
In response to soloing, in this case my wizard is the type of character that looks down on others as inferior and if he groups chooses to use people more than befriend them. To properly roleplay that in a group, I would need to have some sort of power at my disposal to make it fit. it wouldnt exactly be befitting of me at level 2 when I can cast about 4 spells to be looking at a group of potential adventurers as inferior when they could swat me like a bug. Now that I am level 10 and have some real power behind me, it makes that type of stance more believable.

People just use WoW to describe something undesirable without actually knowing much about WoW. Honestly, there's not many MMORPGs out there that support Solo play. In fact the only one I can think of is FFXI and that's only if you play the Beastmaster class, which has gotten nerfed recently, i've heard, so meh.obsoletenihilist wrote:Actually Kell.. the most basic places in WoW require 5 people in a party. Anyway, I think there should be solo-options for players who just can't get a group at the moment, or are playing a loner. There's times when you log on and there's just noone to group with and you want to get something done, and that's when soloing should be available. In the mean time everyone should just play a Cleric if they want to solo
I really like Das, I've had loads of fun here RP'ing. I solo a lot. I actually find a lot of party play quite messy, and nothing to do with RP at all. You get more than 3/4 people together and it tends to become a no RP free for all.
My most fun spontaneous RP moments have started while soloing. You meet someone, or sometwo, and decide to join together. Theres RP interaction all the way through. This is discounting the bigger, more 'political' RP that tends to be on a grander scale than a party going to kill stuff.
Forming a party for the sake of it with general 'we gonna do this wanna come help' (an orc I guess) tends to turn into a wrecking ball charging through areas.
When people say 'party play' what exactly do you mean.. I like small 4 at most parties where the group coherence isnt lost, and when I see these forming on-the-fly through RP I love it and join in as best I can with the RP. I hate forming a party for parties sake. It involes some cringeworthy RP to get things together, and theres nearly always an unspoken undercurrent... 'were all just getting together to go kill'
Hmm, I need to think a bit more to make what I mean concise, but its in there..

I'm currently only soloing when I'm on for a much different reason. My desperately-needs-upgrading system of 2.1 processor is having a BEAR of a time on this game since it's so far below the minimum specs.
I run across the room and it looks as choppy as stop motion photography gone horribly wrong.
I don't want to subject anyone else to my epileptic gameplay. (or as I call it at the moment, lameplay). As soon as I build the new system, I'll be much more group-friendly.
Until then, you all can watch and laugh as the local shrubbery with zero attacks per round wipe the floor with me during combat.

Okay okay okay, I take it back. I digress; I know nothing about World of Warcraft, except for what some of my friends have told me about it.Inziladun wrote:People just use WoW to describe something undesirable without actually knowing much about WoW. And okay; there are a lot of reasons for people to solo. Okies.

If you ever feel a game is just one big grind and a waste of time and money when you get to so called "End Game" where the vast majority of the content is, feel free to call it WoW. I play a straight wizard and as everyone that knows Mordecai knows he mainly adventures in groups, preferably large groups. It's more fun for him, the group will usually have a joke or two along the way and then share a drink or six afterwards.
The only time he goes solo is when he wants to check out his new spells and hopefully how much less often he dies.

Kez Ryskill - Decayed
Lorval Silverbeard - Stormbeard Defender
I too prefer groups, but that's not always an option for me (Different timezones). I'm a level 10 wizard currently.
Here's my strategy that got me XP when I had to solo:
-Get 4 Invisibles (You only need 3 assuming the doors are open, but 4 is safer)
-Go to the entrance to the bugbear caves, buff up (preferably including stoneskin and prot. from energy) and go invisible.
-Go between the quest areas, only coming visible to fight the necessary creatures (You really have an advantage of fighting on your terms, so use it).
-Remember: The flaming skeletons are not immune to fire.
-Usually the door to the lower levels should be opened, so often you can head straight down.
-To fight the Ambassador, I used to use ice storm+empowered fireballs+ILM and stuff like that.
-After you finish each fight, go invisible again and continue on.
-You can loot the areas, but I tend to only get scrolls and gold.
It may sound tedious, but when you consider the rewards it's well worth it. (2200 quest XP + Monster XP + lots of gold). I haven't done this recently as I really haven't needed to, and I find groups far more entertaining.
Good luck.
