REVIEW:

Standing ovation at the Berlinale Film Festival, 16 February 2007

Author: overburned from Germany

I was one of the 1700 lucky viewers to get a ticket to the world premiere of 300. Zack Snyder has done a great job adapting the work of Frank Miller to the movie format! I've never experienced a screening that had to be interrupted because of spontaneous applause by the crowd! The special effects are quite good. The colors are hard to describe. Don't expect the b/w colored style as in Sin City. The colors are soft / Grey / well antique. As a viewer you have the impression of being in the middle of the battles. Well it's maybe not a truthful interpretation of the historical facts, and the same applies to the interpretation of Frank Millers novel. But the story worked for me. Lena Headey (as Queen Gorgo) was in my opinion the best actor/actress in this movie, she really fits 100%.

A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY

In the Battle of Thermopylae of 480 BC, an alliance of Greek city-states fought the invading Persian army at the pass of Thermopylae in central Greece. Vastly outnumbered, the Greeks held back the enemy in one of the most famous last stands of history. A small force led by King Leonidas of Sparta blocked the only road through which the massive army of Xerxes I could pass. After three days of battle a local resident named Ephialtes betrayed the Greeks, revealing a mountain path that led behind the Greek lines. Dismissing the rest of the army, King Leonidas stayed behind with 300 Spartans and 700 Thespian volunteers. Though they knew it meant their own deaths, they held their position and secured the retreat of the other Greek forces. The Persians succeeded in taking the pass but sustained heavy losses, extremely disproportionate to those of the Greeks. The fierce resistance of the Spartan-led army offered Athens the invaluable time to prepare for a naval battle that would come to determine the outcome of the war.[1] The subsequent Greek victory in the Battle of Salamis left much of the Persian navy destroyed. Xerxes was forced to flee to Asia and left his army in Greece under Mardonius, who was to meet the Greeks in battle for one last time. The Spartans and other Greek allies assembled at full strength and decisively defeated the Persians in the Battle of Plataea, putting an end to the Greco-Persian War and with that, Persian expansion into Europe.

We had a thread for the 300 somewhere, but it had turned into a debate on historical facts of how many spartans and who fought alongside them and something about "training" young men.

Best movie... cant say it doesnt looks good but cant say I have high hopes for the plot. That is, when there arent heads being smashed... Not that it isnt slightly fun to watch that either.

Hope it wont be another wave of cliches. (Though this time with nice special effects.)

I came in here to say "You're wrong, it will be 300." I am pleasantly surprised. This is going to be the most manly, head-crushing, spine-splitting explosion of awesome to ever hit movie theatres. I'm going up to Atlanta on opening night, just so I can see it on an IMAX screen. :D

hate to be a spoil sport, but isn't it a little early to have a "best movie of 2007!". I mean, sure 300 could be very good, but what about Spiderman 3, the next Fantastic Four, the next Harry Potter, and all those other movies I'm sure I'm forgetting...

besides, in order for the 300 to be good in my opinion is all 300 have to die. but that's just because i know the history of the matter and was slightly irritated at the diverging away from the Illiad that Troy did.

If you're looking for a historically accurate film, I think you'll be disappointed...there are some wild superhuman enemies for the Spartans, and I'm sure the battle didn't happen the way it will in the movie. But I think the director has the dignity to let them all die.

I'm not looking for wild historical accuracy. add fantasy creatures to kill that's fine. so long as the ending is correct.

but that's simply my opinion. i can be a harsh critic... but usually only after a few weeks after seeing a movie. in the moment i actually tend to enjoy them.

300 will by no means be historically accurate.

But it will be totally awesome.

Appearantly the movie will be very accurate to the comic book by Frank Miller. Has someone read the comic book and can shed light to the fact that whether they die at the end? I have the book at home but I haven't bothered reading it yet :)

Mentioning the next Fantastic Four film as a possible "best" is just wrong. Very, very wrong.

As Skyde here mentioned, the movie is not based on the history books, but rather the comic book. I haven't actually read it myself, but pretty sure Wiki could lend you some insight.
