Alignment Test and link
The thread on Alignment and the movies has been informative as well as fun and a learning experience. Started looking into alignment and such and found two things which are interesting.
First is a good site explaining the various alignments located here. Good refresher for those who've been away from RP for a while like me.
Second is a WotC alignment test here. You can either answer the questions IC or as I did, what I would do in that situation. I ended up with:
Based on your answers to the quiz, your character’s most likely alignment is Neutral.[/url]

I found this guide long ago and have gone off it ever since. It's spot IMO and should be stickied on every forum that even slightly mentions DnD. It has room for all archetypes and I particuarly love the definition of lawful.

For a number of reasons, alignments can be confusing. The following discussions are intended to help everyone have a better understanding of them.
Good Vs. Evil
Most people understand this axis quite well. Think of this as the morals of the character. Will this character consider killing and steeling a bad thing to avoid or as things to embrace to reach their goal? Someone who is neutral will see a balance between these two. A neutral char may consider the death of an innocent as OK if it brings a greater good, it balances out as it were.
Lawful Vs. Chaos
Many people misunderstand Lawful and think it means 'follows the law'. In fact, Orderly would be a better word, IMHO. Think of it as the opposite of chaotic. A lawful char will plan things out and follow their plan to the letter. A chaotic char will make snap decisions and do things on-the-fly. Monks are limited to lawful alignment, they must have discipline to control their energy (ki). Bards must be chaotic so they can follow their heart and seek adventure for the sake of adventure.
The Alignments
Here some examples of the alignments. I started with the descriptions found at Shaderaven's Neverwinter Nights Guides and edited some of them. His site has a lot of good information for creating a new character.
Lawful Good (LG): The "Crusader"
LG characters act in the best interest of society. They have an ideal that they follow and will die to defend it. Although many people would say that LG will uphold the law of the land, this is not always the case. What if the law goes against the teachings of their god? Did they make an oath to do the opposite? As a resent example, think about all of the paladins who had sworn to serve the king and when the king was found, he was evil! They cannot back away from their oath and they cannot serve evil. This is a very common problem for the LG class.
Neutral Good (NG): The "Benefactor"
NG characters are people of good nature who recognize the importance of laws but don't feel as though they have to be beholden to them.
Chaotic Good (CG): The "Rebel"
CG characters are good people who believe that it is freedom of action and purity of cause that a character should be driven by, not by laws or edicts from authorities.
Lawful Neutral (LN): The "Judge"
LN characters are not swayed by emotion (for good or evil) but judge all things equal and seek order and organization. They may uphold the laws of the land, but only if they are not seen as 'wrong' by being too good or too evil.
Neutral (N): The "Undecided" or the "Balance Seekers"
The N character does what they feel best on either a personal level or seeks true balance amongst the powers of good and evil, law and chaos. They are not selfish but rather focused on issues beyond those of normal society. They have also been described as philosophers.
Chaotic Neutral (CN): The "Free Spirit"
CN characters are usually driven by whim and passion. While they ignore laws they are not driven to ensure the freedom of others like the CG character.
Lawful Evil (LE): The "Dominator"
LE characters follow a strict code of conduct and the laws of their order and leadership, but without mercy or compassion. Power rules and the weak deserve their fate. This is one alignment that is often misunderstood. A LE character might not uphold the laws of the land. Instead, they have plan and organize what evil they want. Again, think 'orderly', not 'law abiding'.
Neutral Evil (NE): The "Malefactor"
NE characters do whatever they can get away with but doesn't feel compelled to fight against law or order. They are more interested in their own selfish needs.
Chaotic Evil (CE): The Destroyer"
CE characters do whatever their greed, fury, and desire for destroy carries them to. They despise law, order, and the expected. Unpredictable and unorganized, they delight in chaos

Being egoistic or selfcentered doesn't equal being evil. Neither chaotic. Imho more neutral and lawful, because it's a "It's all even to me" and a repeating and ever returning situation.Evelond Formos wrote:I am Neutral. How odd. I thought I would end up being chaotic evil. oh well.
I thought I'd be chaotic evil because I've found myself not giving a drop of lava from the pits of the nine about others or their needs, and because I constantly go against the rules and goals I set for myself. *shrug*
It takes a lot in this world to be evil! An IQ of 89 and an ex-president for a father, for instant! Or a towel on your head!

I hate these questions... They are far too open-ended. For example.
I simply cannot ignore such things and generalize, which may well answer why I have got every alignment possible over the times I have done those tests...
I see myself as True Neutral. I like my ideas of being a free spirit, yet would not break my word unless I must, and I see a balance to everything, Some evils are simply needed to ensure the good.
It depends which family member we are speaking of, and to what degree.Would you betray a family member to advance your own career?
Yes, without a twinge of guilt
Yes, if I could do it secretly
I'd resist the temptation
I find the very idea abhorrent

I suppose that is why it is a "character alignment test". Human personalites are far more complex and I doubt many rpers can rp characters with the same depth...unless if they start rping their own personalities.
But anyways, I recommend a personality test if you want to actually test yourself and not your characters. Keyra posted this one and it seems it was not only accurate for her, but it was also for me:

Have fun. : )
I try and include many things, when considering how my characters act.. So I do try and play them with the depth of a real person...
Really all of my characters are simply a different side of my own personality I feel.

Neutral
A neutral character does what seems to be a good idea. She doesn’t feel strongly one way or the other when it comes to good vs. evil or law vs. chaos. Most neutrality is a lack of conviction or bias rather than a commitment to neutrality. Such a character thinks of good as better than evil. After all, she would rather have good neighbors and rulers than evil ones. Still, she’s not personally committed to upholding good in any abstract or universal way. Some neutral characters, on the other hand, commit themselves philosophically to neutrality. They see good, evil, law, and chaos as prejudices and dangerous extremes. They advocate the middle way of neutrality as the best, most balanced road in the long run. The common phrase for neutral is "true neutral." Neutral is the best alignment you can be because it means you act naturally, without prejudice or compulsion.
Odd, i took the test for RL and i had thought i was more lawful than Neutral.

I guess I have to work more on the evil and lawful parts. Who knew?Based on your answers to the quiz, your character’s most likely alignment is Neutral.
