Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend
Latishe, swaddled in a flowing, eggshell-white dress, slowly glided into the Church of Lochwar with noble deportment. The ghoulish nightmares had been troubling her for some time now, and she knew she had to confront her worst fear, or risk a horrible fate.
I have to do it, she silently intoned.
She glided to the altar. A Neophyte, noting her obvious station, provided her with a small stool so she could pray with dignity.
She closed her eyes and silently began to pray to Lochwar for forgiveness.
“You are late, Lady Latishe”
Latishe opened her startled eyes “Late? But I was just praying!?”
"Yes, yes. You and your family are late by a few hundred years to pray for forgiveness” said the good-looking man standing before her.
Latishe's heart jumped into her mouth “Lochwar!?” She blurted out.

The man slowly clapped his hands in mock appreciation. “Has the House of Vaine degenerated to such a level? What do you expect, a hundred devils singing prayers and handing out boiled lollies to children?”
Latishe could not think of anything else to do but to bow her head reverently. Fear shot through her body and tears welled up in her eyes.
A gentle hand lifted her chin, and glowing, red-pigmented eyes looked into hers. “Latishe, I accept your apology…no one can ever say that I’m not generous with my gifts, Latishe Vaine. Or perhaps I should use your true name, Latishe…Phazzan.”
He folded his arms and walked slowly around her, seemingly enjoying the moment. "The House of Vaine, an appropriate name I might add for your ancestors, has finally learnt the lesson for their lack of faith.” The man paused. "However you Latishe have at least shown noble acquiescence like a true Varanian, and not grovel at my feet like some captured slave." The man stopped in front of her. "So instead of killing you, I think you can serve me in another capacity.”
Silent tears began to run down Latishe’s cheek, but she remained steadfast in her noble pose. The man looked at her and smiled “You’re not a Minuvas aren’t you Latishe. Now he is a true Warrior of the Faith, just like the old days! Unfortunately Latishe, you just don't have...the balls” The Man doubled over with laughter at his double entendre'.

The good-looking man started walking around her again and began to stroke his chin. "Stand up" he commanded. Latishe did as the man asked. "I have decided to take you under my wing Latishe, and for each day you server me well, you shall not feel the curse“, he indicated as we walked around behind her.
The man then smiled as he spied her curvy hips, and slapped her playfully on her ample behind. Latishe bore it all with noble dignity. "Hmmm...you are definitely a girly girl that's for sure, built for comfort, not for..." the man stopped as a thought popped into his head. He then suddenly appeared in front of Latishe.
"Kneel" he commanded, and Latishe knelt.
"Do you swear to serve me well?"
“I shall...my Lord Lochwar”
“So it will be done Latishe." The man smiled impishly, like a naughty little boy about to tell a dirty joke. "You are hereby a Priestess of Brintha!”
”What!?” Latishe blurted out with impudent surprise.
The man began rolling on the floor laughing. "It's seems you're between the hammer and the anvil now Latishe!" he then continued to laugh at his second double entendre' in as many minutes, and then waved a dismissive hand.
Latishe opened her eyes with unnatural suddenness, and found herself lying on the floor of the Church, surrounded by several Neophytes.
“Are you well Maiden? You fainted after you began praying”, offered one of the concerned Neophytes.
“Yes, I am fine…thank you for your concern”. The Neophytes helped Latishe onto her feet, and she slowly glided to the door. Latishe took a cart back to Cear, still deciding if it was a dream or real. She unconsciously began to play with her favourite necklace, and suddenly her eyes widened as she felt an unusual diamond shape...Her head turned swiftly to the right, drawn by a sound of boyish laughter at the edge of her consciousness.

Your representation of Lochwar is very interesting, and I always find it fascinating to see how each and every person manifests Gods to be. This was a good read that I enjoy alot - and I'm honored that Lochwar recognizes and mentions me by name
. The Brintha turn was pretty interesting, keep up the writing.

((thanks mate. I've always enjoyed the Michael Moorcock view of the gods as being male or female as they please, and having different personas to suit different portfolios as they please. I also think its appropriate that gods name-drop worthy local identities as a sign of their omniscience. Finally the gods have got to fun their fun as wellMinuvas wrote:ooc:

Latishe awoke the next morning, and indeed, for the first time since coming of age, she experienced no ghoulish nightmares. She dressed in her best long white dress, had breakfast, and then glided down to a small house near the Ironback Armoury. This house, in accordance with the faith of Brintha, was practical in its structure and its location. In fact the only giveaway that it was a shrine to the Goddess was the ornate signpost with a blue-white diamond on an earthy red-brown background.
Latishe knocked on the door, and after a few moments, it opened to show a Dwarven lady.
“Good Morning, I am Latishe Vaine. I have come to seek wisdom from the Goddess.”
The Dwarven lady smiled. “And I am Misty, dottir of Ragnir Forgeblade. I have been expecting you, Lady Latishe, please come in.”
Latishe followed Misty inside and discovered a small, but beautifully decorated room with rare citrus wood, silk embroidery from the Cuhanna, mithral engraved ceremonial weapon displays and an ornate suite of gold chain mail. At the centre of the room was an altar shaped like an anvil made out of a beautiful, clear crystalline substance.
”Its beautiful.” Her hand went out to touch the anvil, but realising that it was a sacred object, she knelt reverently instead to pay her respects.
Misty smiled. “It is Crysteel, a gift from the goddess herself. It is as light as wood, but not even a blow from an adamantite greataxe can cut it.”
”It is a wonder that it hasn’t been stolen.” Latishe replied.
Misty chuckled“And risk being cursed by the Goddess? Even thieves like to have reliable equipment. A dagger or a rope breaking at the wrong time could be most unfortunate.”
Latishe smiled thinly at Misty as she changed the subject. “I assume you know why I am here?”
Misty returned a knowing smile. “The vision granted by the Goddess was the strongest I have ever experienced. I find it intriguing though, for a Varanian noblewoman to join our ranks.”
Latishe chuckled as well, warming to Misty's friendly manner. “That makes two of us.”

Over the next few weeks, Latishe studied with Misty, and learnt the sacred and the profane of Brintha. Both Misty and Latishe were at surprised at the pace at which they were proceeding. Canonical law, history, and the construction and maintenance of prayers and rituals; bodies of knowledge which took years for a normal neophyte to understand, were devoured by Latishe in a matter hours. It was as if Latishe had known this all her life, but it had been locked away in some hidden part of her mind.
Within a few weeks Latishe had completed her training. Misty was exhausted, but was beaming with motherly pride.
“Now it is time for you to conduct your first crafting rite at the Ironback Armoury, Lady Latishe”.
Latishe smiled nervously “I think I’m ready, Misty”.
”Good luck Latishe, may the Goddess be with you always” Misty intoned as she made the sign of the Hammer. Latishe returned the gesture and then travelled to the short distance to the Ironback Armoury. She entered the Armoury and smiled as Wright saw her.
“May your Hammer strike true” Latishe said as she held up a petite hand with well-manicured fingernails.
Wright bowed “Allo Lass welcome to the armoury! Aegis has been expecting you, follow me” he continued in his usual gruff but friendly voice. Aegis had his back to Latishe and was bent over examining a half-made weapon. Latishe glided up to him with her small measured steps. Aegis, oblivious to Latishe’s quiet entry, picked up a smithing hammer and began bashing away with great gusto.
Clang!
Clang! Clang!
Clang!
Clang! Clang!
Latishe’s eyelashes started to flutter as the noise reverberated through her head.
“Oi Aegis! Quit that racket! Yah scarin’ the new Daughter of the Earthmother!”. Shouted Wright.
Aegis looked up. “Aaah yer here Lass!” He stated as he bowed. “Ok I’m ready, bless away!”
Latishe, totally thrown by the lack of formality and the hammering noise, suddenly forgot what to do.“I Latishe, hereby bless this…errr thingmagig in the name of Goddess, Brintha the Earthmother”
Aegis looked at Wright, who looked at Mace who looked at Aegis who looked at Latishe.
“It’s a Flail” the Ironbacks all said in unison.
Latishe put a hand to her mouth “Whoops…sorry”
“Och, its alright Lassie” reassured Wright. “We all make mistakes. But we knew, from the first time we saw you, that you were a true daughter of the Earthmother”
“Oh? How so?” Latishe returned demurely.
“You’re shaped like a pot-bellied stove” continued Wright, using his hands to outline Latishe’s curvy figure.
Latishe’s mouth dropped open in complete shock.
“Ahhh...much the pity but they don’t make women like you anymore, Lassie”. All the Dwarves nodded in agreement.

Latishe kept her indignation in check and later confided to Misty about the incident at the Ironback Armoury.
Misty chuckled ”Oh Lady Latishe, you must understand that they are worshipping you, not being lecherous. You see Lady Latishe, Brintha has no need of temples because your body is the divine temple of the Earthmother.”
And over more visits to the Ironback Armoury, Latishe discovered that the Dwarves, despite their informal gruffness, treated her with reverence, and she felt herself bloom with the worship. Indeed Latishe soon discovered that after a few days her hips and bust had increased in size, making it a struggle to get into her favourite clothes.
Once again Misty explained. “As your body, being the Temple of the Earthmother, receives worship, those uniquely feminine traits will be accentuated.”
“But Misty, I can’t fit into my favourite dress? Does it stop? If I have to ever attend a formal dinner at the governor’s residence, my cups will literally runneth over. That is hardly appropriate.”
Misty chuckled “Yes it will stop. And it does have other advantages like preventing dry skin and making nails stronger.”
“Stronger nails? Why didn’t you say that before Misty!” Laughed Latishe.
Over the next few months Latishe got to know Wright, Aegis and Mace Ironback well. Indeed beyond the informal gruffness, Latishe found the brothers to be hardworking, respectful and very easy to get along with. In fact the Ironbacks reminded her of that other stoic and strong man in her life, Bullweig Gurnisson.
But each day was still a challenge, and Each night Latishe went to bed with a silent prayer:
I am a varanian Noblewoman. Pride and Ruthlessness is my breath.
I am a Priestess of Brintha. Being practical and earthy is now my creed.
I must reconcile this.
I thank Lochwar for his wisdom and praise Brintha for her patience.
For the first time in my life I am free. The nightmares are gone. The ghoul that lived within has been exorcised.

A few days later Latishe visited the Ironback armoury and noticed that Wright was looking a bit down.
"Is their anything wrong Wright?" Latishe asked
"Och, I had an argument with Ealden. That devil has been undercutting us. He has also been spreading rumours that we have been using substandard materials. The Ironbacks never use shoddy materials...or I’ll hang up my Hammer!"
"Well that is terrible! Would you like me to talk to Ealden about this?"
Then Mace piped up. "What we need is a crafting guild. Somewhere were we can set prices according to the quality of goods. Somewhere were crafters aren’t undercharging or overcharging each other. Somewhere were we can safely share recipes and provide advice. Yes…and a guild that can run shonky craftsman out of town!"
"Aye", nodded Aegis "And that we can put on apprentices without fear they will run off with the knowledge and become competitors."
Latishe took all this information in "Well there is The Order of the Diamond in other provinces of the Empire. But I wouldn’t know if there is any demand for such an organisation here?"
Then the front door opened…

A tan dwarf in a simple woodsman tunic of earthy greens and browns entered the Ironback's smithy. His bright blue eyes stand out on his good-natured face and his appearance is immaculate in the proud dwarven style.
Graham smiles widely upon seeing the smith brothers and approaches them with his usual good attitude and boisterous greeting. "Yeah! Hello!" Flipping a large braided end of a caramel mohawk from the faintly embroidered shoulder of his tunic, the dwarf first regards Aegis, Mace, and Wright. His face lights up as he returns to this obviously familiar and comfortable bastion of the dwarven heritage.
"What're ya fellas up to? Wouldn't ya believe it, but the earth is shootin' rare crystals out like no tomorrow! Take a look at this!" The earthy dwarf digs a thick paw through his tunic's pocket and opens his hand palm up to show two gems, identifiable as an almost sea-green Alexandrite and deep blue Topaz.
They admired the jewels for a few brief seconds with expected average interest. Afterall, gems were nice, but only a gnome drooled over such things. After they had seen all there was to see, Graham admired the gems' color for another second and pocketed them.
"Graham, we'd like ya ta meet Lady Latishe." Aegis said.
Graham tilted his head up slightly to greet the woman. "Yeah! Hello!"
"We were just talkin' about how Ealden's been spreadin' false rumors about our quality wares." Wright grumbled.
"What?!"
"And that if Cear had a crafting guild, things like this could be avoided." Aegis added.
"Yea, a guild that shares recipes and advice with fair prices!" Mace shouted.
Graham's eyes gleamed as he began getting riled up along with the Ironback brothers. He clenched his meaty hands together and roared. "That's a brilliant idea!"

"A pleasure to meet you Graham" as Latishe eyed his immaculate presentation.
"So Graham, do you think there would be much demand for a craftsman guild? We were just talking about establishing the Order of the Diamond. As a Priestess of Brintha, I have the authority to do that".
Without waiting Latishe unconciously ran her hands down her curvy hips, and then continued. "Of course I'll need to get approval from Governor Verkethed, but I don't see that as a problem, his administration just needs to be aware of our intentions. Then I'll need to get a licence from the guard to put up approved posters announcing the formation of the order. Captain Waters should be most helpful here. Finally I'll organise the town cryer to spread the word as well".
Wright nods at Latishe with respect "Aye. now I know why Misty calls you the Gift from Varana".
