Hah!.. finally a place to show what I can do with the sword.. without any magic around. Unless it will be made into a tournament for women and children!

Just found a cloak of dreams with 25 charges of etheral visage, very nice whoever made it!
To complicate things even more, dont forget about good ol' wands of critical healing with however many charges
*edit* forgot to add; In order for certian spells and abilities to work you must make your enemy hostile before fighting (learned this after many hours dueling a dwarf cleric friend or should i say taking many a dirt nap).

Initiative
Why not have the combatants roll initiative to determine how many rounds of "buffing" they can do? Might let rogues use a little UMD, might let or hinder wizard's buffing their huge defenses. Both roll and add modifiers, then the difference is how many rounds/buffs can be applied with a maximum 3ish. It would almost certainly level it out a little for anyone taking on a cleric.
A cleric buffed is insanely powerful, this is true. However, a cleric unbuffed (and unable to use death spells and etherealness) is equally weak. Unbuffed, that cleric is a fighter with half the AB, worse stats and worse feats. Mages can go invisible and buff, or cast bigby's and buff, or both. In addition they need fewer buffs, and their damage output is not buff dependant. Druids, I'm not sure about, though I'm guessing they have some outs, like that AoE chain stun.ChikenKannon wrote:It's intended to *keep the playing field as equal as possible*Elerion wrote:I'm completely baffled by the no etherealness rule, especially combined with no buffing time. Speaking as a class with no strong disabling spells, no invisibility (other than etherealness), and that is completely reliant on a combination of many small buffs, that is absolute rape.
EDIT: *snipped to simplify*
I don't mind trying to cut clerics down a notch, lord knows we're powerful. This way however, clerics are left as possibly the worst duel class. All the strength is in the buffs (and the save or die spells), and neither can be used.

Your whole party becomes untouchable for 1 RL minute per level. That's more than enough time to buff yourselves to high hell and means that any team with a level 17 caster automatically wins against a team that doesn't have it..

Points...
He has a very good point, etherealness allows far too much of an advantage, having the potential for full party buffs, and I put the prebuff vs no prebuff up to a vote, and suffice it to say, its no contest 5 to 19 right now in favor of no prebuffs....I realize now that I cant make everyone happy, and that some people are annoyed, but this seems like its the fairest all around....besides, there are other ways to win that straight up buffs....be creative, make a team plan, do something spectacular.
Time
The time and date are set for Saturday the 2nd, two and a half weeks from now, at 6 PM EST, which I think is around 10-11 in england, and 7 am in Aus. Best I could manage, and correct me if i screwed the times up
Will try to follow up with an IC advertisement, with a list for teams to sign up if they wish to let me know they will be there...remember teams of three

My response was with regards to straight up duels, not team battles.
For team battles, I see no reason not to allow a long buff timer, as anyone going without buffers can blame themselves.
For solo battles, a cleric without effective access to 90% of his spells is notoriously weak, and much more so than the other buff classes which have some combination of reliable disables, fewer/bigger buffs, powerful non-buff dependent offensive measures and invisibility. That's why I think a no-ethereal rule combined with a no buff time rule is horrid for duels.

The alternative is the cleric with Etherealness auto-winning except against other pure casters. And it's not just clerics that have it, it's sorcerers and wizards as well.
If it's allowed, there's really no point in even trying to fight a cleric, sorcerer, or wizard who has it. You're going to lose unless you're the same.

Although that -would- be amusing to watch.
Oh, the possibilities... I mean, you could even end up as a prop required for the Marak quest
No spices, please.

Did I ever tell you about the time that a group of us were together in one of the hardest to survive areas in Das1, and someone said that they were 'bored' while DM Chicken Little was in hearing range? We ended up with a handful of Claw Warlords, and two very angry red dragons. Not to mention spiders that just wouldn't seem to end.
I don't know what it is with DM's and small lethal creatures...

That was my fault, wasn't it? Oh, and the two Red Dragons weren't just any Red Dragons, those were "Trogdor the Burninator" Red Dragons.Vahene wrote:*chokes*The Explorer wrote:Just a suggestion; maybe the winning team of the tournament get to challenge a DM to a PvP

Yeah, never say "I'm bored" anywhere near a DM, that's a surefire way to get into a lot of trouble.
