(Corrected for spelling, even though I know it was intentional :))

Isn't it a hypocritical statement to call any follower of Lochwar tolerant or honest? Heh.

And yes, a very good read. :) I can't wait for more, I like reading your stuff Minuvas.

The Patriarch awoke in a stone room. He thought he might of been in a prison, his arms and legs were still shackled.

He opened his eyes, his head was throbbing with pain. A small dog-bowl of food and water had been placed within reach of his mouth, although he was unable to move his arms or legs any distance away from the wall.

Only a small stained glass window, bearing the Iron-Fist of Lochwar seemed to illuminate a small circle in the room, in a light-red tint.

His blurred vision at this point, did not make him aware that when he awoke there was someone else already in the room.

"Well...your 'Holiness' how do you like to live like a pauper, chained for your heretical ways?"

"What...who...who is there?"

"You know who it is, Heticus.."

"You know those things in my quarters did not belong to me, I have never carried such things - whoever put them there is trying to set me up. Father, I appeal to you - you know that I would ne-"

"I put them there you old bag." Minuvas made a slicing motion with his hand, as he now creeped out from the shadow of the room into the small glowing circle.

The Patriarch seemed to stop as if he should of seen that coming

"but...why father?"

"Why not? You are a weak leader, a false prophet. Your preaching stinks of Barbaric ideals. Tolerance, Freedom -these are not the ways of the Empire. This is why you can't trust anyone not born of the Old-Varanite ways....your parents were Barbarians Heticus, we both know this. I do not completely blame you for their failures to raise a loyal son..."

"The Preferatii's will hear of this, they will punish you for ---"

"Yet again Patriarch, you underestimate me. I am not a hypocrite, I do believe in the ideals of hegemony and unity. I know you are my superior, and it would be wrong for me to question you and do this on my own..."

He lifted his head up, in perhaps a moment of sadness "You....you are not acting alone?"

Minuvas chuckled "Surely, you did not think you have been making friends amongst the Church with this sort of tolerance in a former Rebel State? Perhaps the Church did not mind having placed in a not-so strict leader during the first few years after the war....but they also know that I've become almost as popular as you, and I preach alot more to the Church Ideals.

Frankly...you are a thorn in the Church's side, Patriarch..."

"The people, they will not allow this..."

"The people will not know, Patriarch. So as I see it you have two options... I have gotten support from the Inquisitors in the area, they don't like your acceptance of non-dogmatic practices of the true faith in the province.

You can proclaim myself the new Patriarch of the province, and spend the rest of your days on a vacation.....in the coldest lands of New Varana. It won't be the best of accommodations but you'll be left alone as long as you keep your mouth shut.

Or we can put you on trial for heresy, strip you of our title, have you executed in the public square - and I'm sure the Church will find a "suitable" successor."

"I will do not such thing, 'Father'. You cannot shake my faith, I am true to Lochwar eternal. You know that you nor the Church can deny me my worship of him"

Minuvas snickered, knowing full well of the edict he speaks of. "You may worship Lochwar wherever you go, but do not show your face here again. What is your choice?"

Minuvas leaned in close, The Patriarch delivered a striking blow of his forehead against Minuvas nose, to which he held now that it was bleeding.

Using his gauntlet to wipe the trickle of blood coming from his nose "You cannot resist forever Patriarch...."

He turned to the door, it was opened for him - and it was then shut.

//I have to say, this is pretty cool, though I wasn't really expecting it, from the few occasions I have met Minuvas he seemed zealous, but hardly power-hungry. Just goes to show you can't judge an evil murderous zealot by his cover - or maybe you can, I forget where I was going with this. Good work anyway, chief.

The Red-Hot branding Iron pressed the symbol into his hands, he did not flinch for a moment.

"You are sick..."

Minuvas wrapped the cloth around his hand, the wound already beginning to form as the Fist burned itself in.

"I am the future, Patriarch"

The Patriarch snorted "Future? How can you say that you are the future. I've heard your sick rantings, you speak of such cruelty. 'And so doth Lochwar ascend from the heavens, unto his chosen people - sons of Canas'"

Minuvas retorted quickly back " ' And thus did Lochwar, smite with a vengeance without mercy upon the heretical' Do not try to mince verse with me Patriarch."

"You people of this province are so weak....pathetic. You would not survive in the Imperial Capital very long Patriarch, your sense of -tolerance- would betray you"

"If it means I wouldn't have to be like you 'father' I'd gladly accept it"

Minuvas quickly scoffed "You mock the idea, but remember who is in what position now. Lochwar honors the strong, can you not accept that it is simply the fate of the Lord of God's himself that someone stronger rise to take your place?"

The Patriarch Pondered the statement, torn between the answer for a moment. "Only Lochwar knows that answer, 'Father'...."

Minuvas walked over to a desk in the shadows, leaning the palms of both his hands against a chair, as he put his head down. "These....these people. Of this province, I have heard them call themselves 'Dasarians'. Somehow it is tolerated here, what a disgusting title. We are Varanites, we are all Varanites. I don't hear the other provinces in such disgust.

You are a Varanite Patriarch, do you have no shame? Or does the Barbarian blood in you simply revile too much in the idea of obedience"

He didn't gratify Minuvas with an answer.

Minuvas picked up the wooden chair and shattered it against the stone wall, looking back at the Patriarch. "Look upon my face Patriarch, I am the future. I shall purge the Heretic, and cleanse the rebel blood from this province - if I must do it drop by bloody drop"

"The people...they have done nothing wrong. So they question things, they do not raise swords and weapons? They need only to be spoken to. They are confused, often they had parents who were bias of their opinion of our Empire...this does not make them wrong. They simply need to be..."

"Communication? Did we not communicate our message clearly with a Iron Boot and a Blade of Steel? Did we not level their cities, destroy their libraries, burn their books.

We rebuild their cities, we give them jobs..money...commerce. We give them Churches , we give them education - food. We give them guards on the street day and night, we give them soldiers ...we give them law and order.

What else is there to communicate? How foolish can they truly be? Are they so stubborn? It must be so. A neat pile of severed heads goes a long way to silencing the tongues of dissidents... it will remind them of their place in life"

"Lochwar bless us, they form a small rebellion. At least we'd know who they are, and I've have the full blessing of the Emperor to drive a few more bodies onto pikes. "

The Patriarch sighed "You act as if the slaying of these people is some sort of sport, enjoyment for you"

A sinister grin extended across his face "I cannot deny that I revel in the progress of the Church and the Empire. Any true Varanite would of course. 'Lochwar Sang a song of glorious battle as his mace crushed the skulls of his trespassers'. "

The Patriarch attempted to fluster up what might be considered an attempt to swing at Minuvas, but his arms were quickly drawn back down by the heavy chains attaching him to the wall.

"Ha...ha...."

"Ha...ha...ha...ha" Minuvas laughed heartily at the Patriarch.

"You're a disgrace to the faith 'Patriarch'. I'll let you sit amongst your own wastes a little longer before you ponder your answer..."

Minuvas walked out the room, the door again was slammed behind him.

The large insect crawled across the table. As Minuvas read his book, the critter slithered on the wood.

Minuvas grumbled and immediately spoke "Dasarians..."

He reached for a small box near his table, and opened it up. He didn't very much like Cuhannans, but one of their traders brought this creature from the Desert - it amused Minuvas so much he had to buy one.

He opened the cage onto the table. The slithering insect on the table, turned its large beady-eyes towards this new creature. Its hundreds of eyes had only just grasped what the creature is.

The slender curving arch of the tail of the creature ended in a pointed tip.Its clattering legs crawled towards the other creature. Minuvas admired the creature, for he saw much of Varana in it. Unlike an insect like ..the spider - which uses a web to catch its prey, and then suck its blood.

No this creature pounces with deadly force, it strikes, it bleeds - it chews until there is nothing left of its prey.

While on creature attempted to study the other, the one from the Desert simply pierced the insect on the table through with its knife-like tail. The creature was soon curling in a paralyzed ball, unable to comprehend what had just occured - before it was being chewed in rapid succession by the insect.

Minuvas grinned a smile, and ushered the creature back into its box.

As he did so, a figured walked into the room. He had a flowing crimson robe that extended beyond his feet, that covered a large layer of armor underneath.

"For you...." he placed the letter onto Minuvas' table, his contact...

The figure walked out, saying nothing else.

An Iron Fist, although - this one was spiked unlike the standard Lochwar symbol, sealed the letter. Minuvas slowly curled it open.

"Father,
You have done well thus far, you have yet to question any of your directives - despite their difficulties. Furthermore, you've successfully done what we have asked of you. We must admit, we admire that you have found the discipline from preventing yourself from snapping Patriarch Heticus' neck by now. Your faith has shown to be unshakable, this is good - he will admire this. Your task is not complete however, and there are pieces that still need to be put into place before we may continue. Heticus is but one element, an important one none the less. He was simply a banner, a symbol - he will be replaced in time by someone else if we act no further. These people, they still have hope. They still somehow believe that they will turn from Lord Lochwar. We will continue to pressure the Red Bishop to proclaim Thrall's Gate the religious capital of Dasaria, this would significantly improve your influence in the area....

The note goes on to read much later in the letter.

Also, be advised - we have denied your wish to be accepted at this time. These are direct orders, and are not to be disobeyed. We will find you , should the topic come up again

~Signed~
*An Iron Fist with Spikes around it*
Praise Lochwar"

Minuvas put the letter down, and looked up again at the small door housing the Patriarch...

Whatever saggy lump of skin and bones remained on the floor could hardly be called a man any more.

Living on the smallest rations of food and water, the Patriarch laid completely face down - looking to have suffered the fatigue of many seasons.

The door before him opened up, the tight sun-tanned skin of a man in his youth took proud strides with heavy thuds as he approached.

"So it seems, Lochwar has blessed you for allowing you to survive this long. Surely...I had imagined this would be the day I would come to peel your husk off the floor and into a tomb, Heticus."

The sack of flesh did not speak.

"It really is a wonder you've survived this long Heticus, and I don't consider myself a fool - despite that the many enemies in this province have fallen for my feigned ignorance at times.

Surely, you would know better. How long did you think this -secret- of yours would remain hidden.

At first, I thought it was merely rumor. That you could bring sight to the blind, restore hearing to the def, and bring back people from death-like symptoms. Miracles, the stories said - fables I believed.

Then I saw it in action, such a blessing - such a spark of divinity. Surely, why would Lochwar give such a thing to YOU. Why you of all of the faithful, over the Emperor and the Red Bishop himself were spared such gifts.

I did the research Heticus, your family....where you lived. What you found so many years ago"

Minuvas approaches, lifts his hand under the skin so that he look it in the eyes. He spots the small Ankh of Lochwar, its shine as if it was furnaced just today. He plucked it off his neck, a long exasperated gasp of wind seemed to leave the Patriarchs lungs as Minuvas did so. As if he had received a strong blow to the Chest.

"I can understand why you wouldn't report such a thing to the Church, afraid we might use it - to expand the mighty arm of Lochwar. Instead you wasted it on such talents, fully knowing that the Barbarians of this province must be FORCED into action - not bedazzled and amazed with your "gift". "

Minuvas continued to pace, examining the stone. "Imperial Records show that you grew up around the area to where Canas was risen, and fought with Emperor Marcus. Normally, the tale would end there...the battlefield was quite large, and many could claim to have lived close by.

But the mighty and powerful Mace of Canas, the divine weapon given to our First by Lochwar himself. This is the important part. While no one is really sure where the damn thing is, some of the Religious scholars argued it was damaged in the battle.

Damaged is a relative term, the tiniest fragment, no larger than a pebble that is rumored to have chipped off the mace, could bestow minor miracles upon someone. The ability to cure the blind and def, and to even bring back some from the dead...."

Minuvas lifts the Ankh up, examining it in the light - a sinister grin accross his face. The very small Ankh, was placed around his neck.

Expecting some kind of surge of power, Minuvas closed his eyes and clenched his fist. After feeling nothing, he tucked it under his armor. "Master of all Plots......I suppose I will find this one out soon enough. It is only time, Heticus. Surrender your title, claim me Patriarch of Lochwar's faith in Dasaria - end your suffering. Go live in one of the Northern Provinces and you shall not be bothered"

After saying nothing, Minuvas stomped angrily out of the room with the ankh around his neck. With what little energy remained in Heticus, a tiny grin could be seen on his face.

The Exemplar looked at Minuvas, awaiting an answer "Father?"

He paused for a few moments.

"He looks Dead father, should we simply toss him for the Birds to have their way?"

Minuvas sneered " Despite their position on Heticus, I would never allow his body to become a sacrifice to a bastion of Heretical beasts. Nay he will be given a proper burial, amongst the tombs when they are complete.

History will remember him as timid, inactive, and without purpose."

The Exemplar, befuddled spoke "Was it not Heticus that changed the perception of Lochwar amongst these people, allowing former rebels to accept him into their lives..."

If not for the clear designation of Lieutenant marking the soldiers Chest, Minuvas might of had him killed - but settled simply for an aggravated tone of voice "AS History will see him, he was timid."

"Yes ...Of course Father" the Exemplar said, in an apologetic tone.

Minuvas kneeled before the body, talking to it - though he was assured none could hear his words but himself. "The bastard went to his grave with his secret, perhaps he wasn't as soft as we thought...."

"Regardless.." Minuvas said as he stood up, looking down at the fleshy skeleton "In time, all things will be revealed. I suppose we'll have to find a suitable succesor to the Patriarch" he grinned

The Exemplar simply looked forward, two of his Privates stood at his side. "As far as this matter is concerned, the Patriarch is alive and struck with illness. Take the body, we are not done with it yet. Some of Culnul's , Peralias or Coloth's clergy might be able to divinate the secrets from Heticus - even from beyond the grave. I won't let him get the best of me.

Do as I command, if you disobey - the least of your fears will be to deal with me, for the Inquisitors loom over this issue as if it were their own task."

"Go now"
