The Dasarian Provincial Mages Guild Proposal
While being a male-dominated society, I think there is a place for females to rise up if they can prove themselves. Of course, their male counterparts may not like it, but if a female can prove she is superior at what she does compared to all around her, who is going to argue with her? There have been several examples of females who have risen to the top of their respective ladders in Varanite society, largely for this reason. Windy was probably the most accomplished assassin Varana has ever had in its employ. Very few would dare to oppose the likes of her because of who she was, and what she could do - gender never entered into the equation. I'd view it like a cut-throat law firm. A dog eats dog world, where the toughest rise up, usually at the expense of others.
It's just a game...
Honestly, I'm trying to keep restrictions in general as minimal as possible, I even felt bad leaving drow out
. I suppose I could get away with excluding half-orcs too, I'm yet to meet a half-orc mage (wiz/lock or sorc).
Originally I tried to keep with the Church standards for recruitment, but obviously I didn't stick to my guns. I'm sure if people present good arguments against keeping certain races, or even genders, I'll comply. This faction is fairly democratic in function anyway.

see this is confusing to me because this is a Lawful orginization, how can you ask a Warlock (whom btw HAS to be CHAOTIC or EVIL in alighnment) who is chaos magic inherent to even RP to a Lawful guild?sirius wrote:Oh and remember people, it's wizards, sorcerors, warlocks and bards, only need 1 level of any of those to qualify.
I could see hiring myself out as a mercenary, but I wouldn't be a part of anythihng lawful, it would go against the IC aspect of the class itself.
I really don't like the chaotic or evil restriction on warlocks.
Besides, I don't let alignment mold my characters (unless of course we're talking paladins or palemasters etc. etc.), and I assume I'm not the only one. Alignment is usually the last consideration when I make my characters, and I'm trying to give people who have been given what I consider unfair restrictions the chance to take their character in the direction they want.
I'm sure there are a number of people who are their current alignment merely because they had no better choice.
I'm sorry you disagree, and you should feel free to, but I don't see why a Chaotic character couldn't suck up their pride and become involved in something that achieves, ultimately, a good end, even if it is lawful in the sense of adhering to laws and beliefs.

You can be lawful evil or neutral evil and still join. And, conveniently, lawful evil is perfect for the sort of backstabbing politics that make up Varana.

And just because you are chaotic doesn't mean you will NEVER obey the laws.
I've played chaotic neutral characters for a long time - and with that particular aspect of the alignment (the 'chaos' part), it just means your actions are going to be the ones that will make the DM reach for that bottle of liquor or press the 'auto-kill' button out of sheer frustration. Of course, the chaotic characters in your party probably are also responsible for the DM dropping a prismatic dragon or five on your head as well.. but I digress.. it just means that their actions are going to be unpredictible, and not necessarily conforming with the laws of the land.
Think of them as the cats of the RPG world. You're pretty sure they'll react a certain way, until they do the exact opposite and lick their fur, grooming themselves instead of gnawing off your leg.
As for warlocks - most of you have all ready interacted with a LE warlock in game, you just might not know it. (and no, I don't play this character)

No not all, thank you all for your input an elaborating. Since I'm fairly new to online Rp, its good to hear you perspectives and to know the loose interpretation on Alighments, and I whole heartedly agree, I wasn't sure where the community stould on this and didn't want to seem flaky being inconsistant. I especially like the point of "being where your not supposed to be" which really sums up Silvermane. I may look into this after all. I'll PM thanks again!
You're welcome.
EDIT:
I've decided to halt the first phase of recruitment. Meaning, that the people who have shown interest thus far are automatically Mages, and if there is anyone I've missed in the list who has shown interest thus far, they are Mages and should contact me immediately to get their name added. Oh, and if you're an EK, or some sort of melee-caster hybrid, you are a Mage-Knight, not a Mage. They're exactly the same by the way.
The reason for this is, well, there's about 11 people so far that are automatically mages, which is fairly significant, and I think that's enough to start with, and once we become a proper faction ('if' we become a proper faction) we will begin 'normal' recruiting, e.g. people become apprentices, and if a mage, mage-knight, arch-mage, high arcanist or high mage takes them under their wing, they're a charge.
I'm still considering exactly how a lot of the financial stuff will operate, so if you're involved already, or would like to be, there is still some room for me to change my mind and allow people to become mages up front, if you give me some useful input, that is.
Essentially I'm waiting on the official word from the DMs, so, hold in there you crazy cats, and I'll get back to you all.

About warlocks though, since they're generally not trusted, it might be a good idea to label them with something less sinister than "warlock". The guild could call them "supernaturals" or "thaumaturgists" or something like that. The word warlock just is a bit too menacing, and therefore they might not be something you want to accept openly (although you might want to deal with them in secret).

The point is that since warlocks are not generally trusted, it would be foolish to deal with them openly. And many warlocks would prefer to keep their warlockness a secret. What do you think?Wikipedia wrote:The commonly accepted etymology derives warlock from the Old English wǣrloga meaning deceiver, or "oathbreaker".

I've yet to run into any warlocks who care whether or not people know they're warlocks. There are a few people who automatically distrust warlocks just for being warlocks, but they seem to be very small in number (or they just don't voice it).The point is that since warlocks are not generally trusted, it would be foolish to deal with them openly. well, anyone educated enough to know how warlocks get their powers would automatically distrust them. You'd have to be a fool to trust someone who bargains with evil beings to that degree. As i understand it, warlocks are directly linked to infernal beings, and i don't think infernals are very popular.

You're talking about an empire that was built on alliances with drow, devils, necromancers, a dracolich from the great beyond, and has incorporated into it the Magnus Order which also had no problem using various summoned critters to achieve their ends.
The church itself views devils as messengers from Lochwar (at least according to Minuvas; if a DM wants to correct me on this one now would be the time).
People may find them a little creepy, but I doubt the average educated Varanite is sitting there viewing warlock-dom as something to be ashamed about.
