As someone who plays a smith, and regularly makes weapons and armor for folks, I'm hoping to acquire the rights to open a smithy which I could operate as a place of business. Although not to the same extent as the Grey Company, I'm RPing this and hope that it will result in me getting the keys to a building where I can safely store supplies, craft items, worship Brintha, and so on. To me, this implies having a portion of the building be off-limits to the public. After all, I cannot be there 24/7 to guard against thieves, even though my character might be there most of the time.
Like the Grayle, I think it is completely reasonable to expect that I would need to fund the construction of this building (or renovation of an existing structure), go on quests, or whatever, in order to achieve this goal, and I'm happy to do so because it helps with the RP "realism".
I can see the point that it would be a problem if everyone and their goat had a house. However, this is intended to be more than a private enclave. It also serves as a place of business which, hopefully, will receive a steady stream of customers, and hopefully that will add to people's enjoyment of Dasaria II.
IMHO, it would be equivalent to Father Minuvas asking for a special area in the Church of Lochwar building. It could easily have a reasonable RP explanation and is a good recognition of consistently good RP (or is that consistently evil RP ;).

the bottom line is that if there is to be PC owned areas in dasII, they will not be restricted to just that pc. its a waste of time for the dms to build an entire (or incorporate) a whole new area just for the benefit of one person.
now whole areas that would have a quest or two and are beneficial for the populace would be nice but why buy that? dms are supposed to be chuckin that stuff out to keep players coming back. i think that the only way for one to have a private area built is that it be for a faction and there be necessary guidelines and prerequists to meet before the dms will build/incorporate your area. and when they do put it into the world it should be possible to hold it under seige or be broken into by rival factions or guards or adventurers. eh.
Wumpus Slayer and other craftsmen being able to open shops is an excellent idea!
suggested guidelings:
> 5+ active faction members
> the faction (or shop) is able to pay a preset amount of tax if the area is governed (in village or town)
> required to have an NPC who can give a quest (factions more so than shops)
> be handicap accesible

Dont pressure me damn it! I already had one very successful show, what more do you want from me!!!! The permits and all the paperwork drove me insane. I am an artist, not a politician! You want a theatre, make it easier to organize a show! *walks off in a snit*

I would like to assure our most esteemed heretics, and followers in the audience -Grayle wrote:My faction has been working on such a project for months, stemming from an In-Character desire to advance our station and increase our influence within the region. The steps we are taking to achieve this are being role-played, alongside doing the toolset work ourselves, including quests that would be available for the entire community. And yes...we have the in-game resources.
One of the things that seperates D & D from other games is the ability to affect the world around our characters. Long-term IC goals (such as a construction project) should be encouraged, so long as they are approached and achieved with the risk of failure that role-playing brings. Individual player housing would probably not do much to enhance the campaign, but I see faction 'bases' as being a prime example of players bringing the server to a more intimate and interactive level, so long as there are elements to such structures that bring some new play aspect to everyone.
We might succeed, we might not...that's role-playing. But the attempt in and of itself is a great story, and one of the underlying themes of the Grey Company.
The Church of Lochwar has always been looking for ways to expand and continue to lavishly decorate its Churches, as well as establish new ones.
We hope to hold Wyvern at Mace-Point sometime in the future and build a small location of Worship in the Caer City proper...so that we can keep a better eye on everyone.
Individual Player housing I have always been against.
Large, Open group organization - now I'm all for that. I think that it is also important that it IS contributive to the community as well. We want other players to see these areas, experience them. I think its important for any "Faction buildings" to have its own set of small private areas, but largely - provide a community experience for everyone.
On a Side Note:
Please stop rummaging through my quarters in Thrall's Gate, or you may find yourself accidentally strapped inside an Iron-Maiden.

I would rather see their time spent on expanding the world and creating more content for the post 16 characters.
If there are concerns about storage, perhaps a banking system would be of more general use. though I think banking is already on the design teams "list" if I am not mistaken.

Yes I also beleive a banking system has been designed but not uploaded.
GM Sabre, WB Falcon and DM Boinic are the ones running stories/events currently which provide some great entertainment for those of us with High Lvl Chars.

I hope that it wont only be for the High level characters. That is not my intention. And I don't think it's Sabre's or Falcon's attention either. It would encourage to powergame over roleplay just because people would be able to get into events more easy then. We're storyline DM's. Not really Powerplay DM's.The Explorer wrote:GM Sabre, WB Falcon and DM Boinic are the ones running stories/events currently which provide some great entertainment for those of us with High Lvl Chars.

My apologies, I should have been clearer, ofcourse the player levels vary greatly but it gives us high lvl's something to do apart from Rp for hours and hours which is fun but when I get home from work most days I want to jump in game and kill something, fight something and/or as everyone knows BURN something. It varies but I know most of the other players with High lvl chars do to.
Apparantly it's not only frowned upon but really illegal to do all three of those in RL *sighs* My martial arts days are behind me.

i look forward to the day when IG is more RLish. in terms of governing and stores and what not! i think that the idea that the shops and faction leaders pay taxes to the local governments (whether they be human or... not) could really create a great deal of sidequests for high levels and low levels. for instance: a high lvl mage (npc) who runs a large magic shop seems to have 'forgotten' to pay his tax for the past quarter and the local government needs some highrolling PCs to come in and teach this maniac a lesson.
idk something like that *imagination runs wild*
