Comparing and Contrasting Dasaria and Skullport

Post by Crispy »

Over the weekend I decided to give another PW a go ( ) -- that of Skullport.

For those unfamiliar, Skullport is a Forgotten Realms-based PW set in the completely-underground world of the Underdark, near the infamous, huge dungeon called Undermountain which is beneath the city of Waterdeep.

I had an interesting time. Let me give a quick synopsis of how it went (I'm only going to visit it again occasionally -- read below as to why):

At first, it's very fun. You arrive in Skullport, which is quite a large town with about eight different sections to it with plenty of shops and places to walk around. You are greeted with a few semi-interesting characters and given a pretty clear idea of what to do to start earning some experience and much-needed gold. The overall setting and atmosphere is sufficiently lonely and foreboding; you do get the impression that your PC is deep within the earth and that there is no love in the place.

Now on to some of the C&C'ing with Dasaria, presented in bullet-point format:

- Skullport's characters (NPC's), while intriguing at first, quickly show their transparancy. Dasaria's NPC's generally seem more believable because of their descriptive backgrounds and appearances. This does much to make Dasaria a more believable and rich world.

- The writing in Skullport and *all* of its dialog is horribly executed. Attrocious grammar and being rife with spelling mistakes quickly yank the player out of his or her role and remind them that they're playing in a teenager's world. It's that bad. Dasaria's dialog is better formed, more interesting and, thankfully, more consistent.

- There are some innovative things going on in Skullport's world. Chairs that are "sittable", persistent chests and a bank, varied versions (like the color) of armor and other items, etc. More goodies that make the development of your character either easier or just more gratifying. You can also hire henchmen and "pets"! I hope Dasaria can implement some of these types of features in the future.

- The feeling of exploration is, and may naturally seem to be, more prevalent in Skullport and its surrounding environs than Dasaria. This may be only because I'm new there and I haven't stretched my legs as much, but you seem to sense that there is real danger out there to be found, knowing that it's the Underdark and all, so the desire to explore comes through a little stronger. This is the best aspect Skullport has going for it.

- There is a distinct lack of players and, probably because of that, roleplaying in Skullport. The place is almost always deserted. I have run across maybe five other players since signing on there and their demeanor was generally of the "run and gun" type with few exceptions. I really got the impression that there was little if any DM involvement there (to be fair, the server's description specifically states no DM involvement is needed!)

After fooling around long enough there, I found myself longing to get back into Cear and interact with the great playerbase Dasaria offers, but I also found myself longing for the type of vast, mysterious underground world that Skullport offers for Zahur and all Dasarians to be able to venture into. It would add so much to the atmosphere, and it proves this type of environment technically can be done.

I know very well other new areas are being worked on here, and I'm sure they'll be great, but IMO nothing beats an Underdark-type subworld to create a dichotomy between the lands above where elves roam and the cold, brooding underground that attracts adventurers of all kinds.

Anyone else try Skullport? What are your thoughts?

Skullport is a Forgotten Realms-based PW
This is my stubborn opinion but I lose all interest in a server right there ^

Not to say that FR is bad, I simply have more interest in the unique worlds created by players.

Yea, im a very big fan of the exploration type areas, and I hold no prefference over FR or original.........but I cant STAND repeated spelling errors.....definately not for me.

I would, however, no mind seeing some old school, BG II type areas....you know, the nice, big areas, rife with interesting quests, people who are there soley to have an interesting conversation with.
Great game btw :P

Have you tried shroudworld yet? That has a lot of interesting areas to explore. There is a dungeon called the obelisk. It is not a normal dungeon in the sense that it is full of monsters (which it has) that you hack through to get to some boss and kill. It is a dungeon with many levels (supposedly they will take you to level 20) that is based on tricks and puzzles. The dungeon itself gives you quests (which I understand are random) and after you do a number of them you are granted access to another level. I got to the 2nd level which seemed to be mostly pure puzzles. One such was walking across a bunch of tiles in the right order to get to the end of the maze. Wrong tiles teleported you to the beginning and damaged you. Completing this takes you to a room of switches you need to figure out and then you go back tot he starting room that removes one obstacle from a gate (I have no idea where it goes) and then you must solve other puzzle rooms on that floor.

I think it would be cool to have a dungeon like that in dasaria. The other thing they do is have quests which are resistant across server resets. The world is also quest based in XP so monsters give you very little. The problem with this has been that a lot of people want monster XP and I know some of my friends really dislike this aspect of the game. They do not want to play on that server so it is one of the reasons I have not played there much anymore.

The landscape and story of the world is kind of neat. They have a lot of themed areas that are very well thought out. It is far more then just a zone with a few dungeon entrances. They do very well in making you feel that the world is alive and NPCs really do live there.

They also have an NPC guild system. There is the adventure's guild which anyone can join. They are a mission hub and have special vendors depending upon your faction. They also have profession guilds that have their own agendas and quests.

There is a rich faction system as well. Killing some monsters raise your faction and may lower it with other groups. Enemy groups may not always be enemies too. For example there are bandits and you can actually raise faction with the bandits who will become friendly to you and eventually give you missions. You can use their bandit camps as a base of operations if you like. They have vendors and everything.

All this is really nice, but despite all of that, there are not many players. I think the quest based XP kind of makes a lot of people not want to play. If you end up where you can't do any quests because they are too hard, you can't level because monsters don't give xp hardly at all. Most of the quests are very generous in XP / gold, although since they are saved even between server resets, you can only do them once.

Well thought out and presented post. The thing that caught me most was;

I believe several folks would be interested in seeing those features in Das2. I have seen repeated posts about a banking system being "on the list" so to speak, so I bet we will see something like that in the future.

Both the NPC guild system and NPC faction system sound very interesting. I don't know if either would work with the DM/Design team's plans, but maybe they will think about it.

A great idea, but I'd humbly suggest before sittable chairs etc that:

1. Obsidian fix transition crashes and make thing easier for new content to be designed and added to a PW;

2. Enough content is added that EOS to be successfully and realistically implemented. Then roleplaying will get very, very interesting!

Skullport honestly gave me a headache, it seemed a labyrinth in the dark and to me. was confusing at best. DESERTED for sure, I never ran across anyone the 4 times I played there. Never had any transition crashes (probably because no one else was on) and I personally didn't like how it was dark everywhere. I'm more of a Wandering in the forest kinda player.
When I read grammatical errors they used to bug me till I mentally put them aside as character speaking impediment or accent.
I loved the PETS! I had a Dire Badger save my arse like 6 times, it nailed critters sneaking up behind me in the UnderDark. I had an elf and still had to crank up the gamma.

Like Abyssia, it is equal outside as Skullport is inside, a very b3eautiful place Abyssia is. I just didn't like their Xp restrictions. Its amazing to see a server pretty much enforce group activity to gain xp when in fact very few players are around to begin with.

The Forgotten Realm server is nuts with players (35-48 on average any time of the day or night) and trigger happy hack and slash areas. Tons of critters to kill and group xp is enforced (even a group xp bonus). BUT you get tired of it real quick. There were like 2 quests on the whole thing I could find, finding a lost cat and finding a lost spoon. Kinda stupid really.

Dassaria for me was literally the best of all of them. I just grew weary of capping out (and the incredible amount of transition errors more than any other server I have experienced) and nowhere else to go, and most of the players I played with stopped showing up in the A.M.
Also nudging me in the back of my mind was the fact I was playing about 14 hours a week and felt the stress of doing something more constructive with my time. Now I'm spending about 1-3 hours a week gaming and 11 hours working on music engineering and playing guitar/keyboards (getting seriously back into it to create gaming tracks for clients).

Thanks for the fun!

Agreed. But even better than original content for me is a Krynn server, so fun. :D

I tried Skullport and , for me , the biggest problem was that there're no players. As you wrote, if you meet 5-6 chars - it's your lucky day.
