Alone

Elysa sighed.

Getting up from her book-cluttered desk, she dropped down on to a small empty area on her equally book-cluttered bed. She sighed again.

Looking around the small, dimly lit Inn room, she felt her frustration grow. She glanced to the small curtain concealed window, and let her thoughts drift for a moment to what may be occuring outside. After a few moments of letting her thoughts drift, she looked down at her somewhat pale skin, and toppled a pile of books sitting on the bed out of irritation. How long had it been since she had been out there? she had thought to herself. Too long, she had seen or spoken to her friends in too, too long...

Her mind lingered on the word 'friends'. How many friends did she truely have? She had no friends before she made her first journey to Cear, that being a big part of her reasoning for making the journey in the first place. At least, no loiving friends. Her master and teacher from then was certainly nothing close to resembling a friend, and she tried to keep from thinking about or speaking of him.

There was her second teacher though, the Elf, Sion... who she had always regarded as very kind and generous. Elysa thought that the two of them had a lot in common in spite of their obvious differences. In fact, Elysa had found him somewhat attractive; and while their relationship was quite friendly, there was a relationship established already. A relationship that made it somewhat awkward to label him 'friend', and even more so someone she was attracted to.

And then there was Allarick, although the thought of him gave Elysa a strange feeling in the pit of her stomach now. Not quite the same same feeling as being stabbed in the stomach, as Elysa could attest to first hand. However, the feeling was almost equally as unpleasant, and as such, Elysa had tried to do her best to avoid Allarick, whether just in person, or even in thought.

There was Hagen and Tabrin, Elysa considered. Those are perhaps the closest to friends she had. Her memories with them were mostly pleasant, and the three of them seemed to get along well. But there was still a... closeness, with the two of them, that she seemed to be lacking. Even with them, she still felt somewhat... lonely.

Elysa found herself straightening the pile of books she had knocked over without havint realized she was doing it. After finishing, she stood up and made her way to the door in her room. For a moment she paused, her hand resting gently on the door knob, and she glanced behind her to the window again. She hesitated for a moment, standing there silently and still. After what seemed like minutes pass, Elysa sighed once more, and returned to her desk. She ran her finger down the page to see where to see where she had left off...

Allarick sat wrapped in a woolen blanket, shivering beneath the rain-pelted canvas canopy of his campsite in a quixotic struggle to remain warm and dry against the cold Cearian drizzle. In contrast to the foul weather, the warm, damp-furred bulk of this faithful friend Fiare lay curled about his stockinged feet, shielding them against the grey weather. The bear rumbled slightly with her slow-paced, sleep-laced heavy breathing.

Allarick stared into his sputtering campfire as if in a trance, dwelling on the one that was gone. Though he had walked the wildlands of Dasaria in complete solitude these past twenty years, never in his life had he ever felt so alone. Where is the one I’d found lost, he thought, the one who’d once cared for a wandering star?

The rain-buffeting wind suddenly crescendoed and he wrapped his blanket tighter in defense against its burgeoning, resigning himself to further cold and discomfort.
