A Noose for the Vicar, a Promise for Varana

Post by Novus Ordo Seclorum »

Dawn breaks evenly upon the rolling hills north of Cear, in this golden year of Marcus IV, 633. The sun winks from the rosy horizon, revealing a grotesque sight upon one of the innocent trees that pock the countryside. A corpse in holy man's robes, dangling from a noose. One of the city patrols sees it first, aghast. Onlookers approach slowly, realizing that the rope is not the reason for his leave from this world: stab wounds fleck his body, pouring divine blood onto the grass below. A sword, apparent cause of the brutality, stands point-down in the hill like a cross, as a continuing mockery of the priest.

And it is Lochwar's priest--those holy robes are red and black, their nocturnal color unchanged by the swaths of blood. A few gasps escape the weaker of heart, with the strong and devout to the King god remaining silent, eyes narrowing to hateful slits. After the shock subsides, a few approach the dead priest to cut him down. As they draw near, they see a carving in the tree, an amalgam of symbols that bring a shudder to any loyal Varanite on their own: A crude dragon wielding a flaming axe in one hand, and a net in the other. Confused whispers snake through the crowd, every one unsure of what to think. Below the strange carving, letters are almost hacked into the dew-laden bark, as if by a raging hand.

With the warrior's power we shall fight, with the dragon's fury we will kill, and with the crusader's light we will rebuild upon the ruins. The rightful King will take his throne upon a pile of bodies that shall reach the heavens; each one brought great doom for the greater good. This is but the first...prepare, Varana. Raise your golden bracer to the net, the flame, and the wicked claw: they come for you.

Torquil Lamond stood nearby, speaking in hushed tones with one of his Ensigns. Also in his company was a Constable, acting as his aide-de-camp on-scene. This Constable held a notebook and writing implement, taking down everything he heard or saw diligently and dutifully.

The Commodore was disgusted. This was another public display of butchery that nearly turned his stomach, if not for the previous sights he had seen while occupying his office. News of the slaying reached him only a few short moments ago, and he had been quick to dispatch Fleet-members to the scene—one, to secure the site, and two, to ensure that the dignitary of Lochwar was treated respectfully.

Several Constables dotted the area, combing the hills and knolls, or keeping interested citizens at bay. This was not a public spectacle; it was the scene of a crime.

"Ensign, please have the Priest covered so he is not bare as he is. Send word to Father Minuvas immediately." Torquil hoped the Father would be able to identify the Priest, and perhaps fill him in on the Lochwarian's general whereabouts and duties.

"Seize that weapon, Constable Kledran." The Commodore gestured, nodding to the blade that had been left behind, "I would like it examined by Lieutenants Drake and Snapwyre."

Marius was incredibly intelligent in any sphere, and Myriah knew her weapons. He needed his brother, Leyland, too. Those markings and that phrase concerned him—dragon? warrior? What did it mean?

"And dammit, Kledran, clear that riff-raff over there!" The Commodore ordered testily, pointing to the growing crowd, "We are not in a theatre!"

Minuvas passes the body, kicking down the sword in the ground just before the Fleet takes it. The Priests wounds are wrapped out of respect, and he is placed in proper position.

Minuvas couldn't help hide the small grin on his face at the sight of the almost sick Commodore. He approached him before Patting the commodore on the back "Come then Commodore! Today is not a time for sickness, our Brother gave his life - and his Crimson blood is sacrifice today for our Lord God. What better way to honor him than to become fiery, than to be ready to hoist our Lords banner. The body will be taken care of."

Unshaken, he takes the body. "Let there be honor amongst the dead" and with that, the Citizens without question hoist the body in the air - carrying it towards the temple. The small procession carries the body, but not a tear is dropped.

For it is not Fear which takes the Citizen, it is Sadness and Lochwar teaches his people of strength. Time would tell if it would become Anger.

For Heretics are nothing new to Dasaria, and Minuvas twirled his mace. Already the stains of blood had dried from his last Heretic....

And surely, this would be no different. He looked at the Neophytes, who smiled in return to their Priest.

"He who cringes upon our brother, does not deserve to stand amongst us. For a Crimson sacrifice in the name of our lord is no greater death. Even greater, is the promise this heretic challenges us. This is what you have been trained to do, not to write parchment and sit amongst the Church cleaning it. We are all trained to spill blood in the name of Lochwar.

Praise Lochwar!"

The Neophytes return with thunderous cheer "Praise Lochwar!"

"Brothers, stay behind and tend to the women and children of Varana who mourn the loss of one of our own. But remind them, Lochwar is strong - his followers are millions strong. A lowly heretic band and his uneducated marauders are nothing new here. Go with my praises"

Heresy does not shake, nor tremble those clothed in Red. It emboldens them, it rallies them - and when it rears it head, it arms them all. Minuvas places a helmet on his head - that he has never worn before, and looks to the closest Neophyte "Get me my Warmace and summon the Exemplars. This man tries to scare us as if we would cower like beasts, he must think the Dasarians still live here !"

The men laughed heartily at the comment.

"Who wants to make a body pile tonight!"

The men cheered. They would mostly likely not find their quarry that night, but their spirits were up, and their mood fiery, and they would end up killing an assortment of wild beasts to quench their thirst for the night.

Before his men left for the Hills he spoke to the Commodore "If we want find anything, we'll bring it back alive" he smiled. Not really caring if what he said was true. "I'll have the symbols studied, and I will get back to you on those matters. No doubt you'll be wishing to do an investigation, you have what you wish from me"

He grinned one more time as if in a "I told you so " manner. "Do you see the horrors of the Heresy in this province now, Commodore? Yes...I think I will arrange that sermon for your men soon" He strapped a Warmace into his hands before walking off into the hills.

Elvith stands quietly from afar, looking disgustedly at the scene. Probably some band of a few rebels with no real purpose other than to cause chaos for their precious half an hour of fame. The Elf leaves just as minuvas and his followers begin to carry away the body. Dragons, flaming swords, nets, almost sounds like something a half-witted sell-sword would think of, which is probably precisely what it is.

No longer concerned with the murder, Elvith Tellithe retires to his room in the misty to crack open a few books on cultish behaviors to search the pages for any mentions of flaming sword wielding dragons.

The Commodore looked up, not amused at the Father's joviality. A Red Priest had been cut down and displayed in public—a blatant act of heresy and murder, one not seen in these parts since the Great War.

He resented the sickness comment, but did not allow his feelings to show—he was disgusted, yes, but not nauseated. If anything, he was morally rebuked and was disgusted at the depravity of the whole situation.

The destruction of the tree also irritated him, but did not ruffle his feathers enough for him to speak in spite—Minuvas had lost one of his own, and he knew how that felt.

"I would be most appreciative, Father, if you would leave such things intact for my officers to investigate—it may serve our cause in hunting down these heretics."

No matter; his aide-de-camp had copied down both the phrase, and the symbol, and he would have his Officers begin pursuing leads.

Any such heretical symbols or icon would be destroyed soon enough, and his Constables were doing an admirable job of keeping the common citizenry at bay—the last thing the people needed were symbols and icons.

"I will allow you this 'eve to bury your fallen, Father. You have my condolences. I will need to speak to you at a later date regarding this incident, however." He would undoubtedly attend the Priest's funeral service, if permitted.

He turned back to his Ensign, nodding as the Fleet-member filled him in on a particular subject. His mind drifted to the Red Priest's remarks, and hoped that such a "body pile" wouldn't make trouble for the Fleet, or his investigation.

Leyland approached the scene with a raised brow, his flaming hair ruffled in the wind and his helmet under his arm. His giant war mace rested on his shoulder as his cool emerald eyes watched Minuvas and his followers attempt to take control of the situation by removing the body. He took note of his brother and moved to stand by his side, observing the situation. Leaning towards Torquil he whispered something in a hushed tone that only he could hear.

"Perhaps we should consult the Talon about this, because if I am not mistaken, this is just as much our jurisdiction as it is his—If not more so. That is evidence he is walking away with. " His stomach turned slightly as his gaze was directed once more to the priest and his followers toting the dead body around while singing Lochwar's praises. Leyland spoke again, his voice resuming it's original tone.

"Praise Lochwar, give us strength in this time of loss and bless the priest who's life was lost"

He bowed his head slightly and whispered a few more prayers, his hands folded over the handle of his mace.

Upon hearing the commotion Rhode had wandered up to see what might be about. Minuvas's rallying of the crowd was little surprise to him along with the appearance of the Fleet but the symbol engraved on the tree caught his interest.

Snaking his way through the crowd and around the Fleet-men trying to herd the crowd away from the scene Rhode made his way to the tree and leaned forward to study the image. His gaze found within the image the sign of the flaming axe.

At first he took several paces backwards, his face whitened in fear and his hands began to shake. He tightened his muscles almost as if in spasms and bit his lip drawing blood; his fear having mixed with anger.

"Nos! Yous nots box mes ups again. Kill mes dis time? Wes sees bouts dat. Is rip fer throat out wit mes teeth!" He screamed drawing his mace and attacking the symbol on the tree.

Bits of bark and tree fibers few as Rhodes mace pounded the engraving on the tree. He paused to study his work when he realized that many eyes were now turned in his direction and Fleet-men were scurrying towards him.

"Errr...Opps"

Rhode quickly concealed his mace back under his cloak and one hand worked at a pouch on his belt as the other waved various gestures in the air while he mumbled to himself.

Flicking the contents of the pouch in the air the area around the tree descended into darkness. Once light returned to the crime scene Rhode was gone.

Commander Allers and his two officers marched into the temple at Thrall's Gate , the thunderous expression on his face sending the acolytes scurrying. He marched straight into Minuvas' office, noting the almost smug expression on the priest face. He did not stand on ceremony, ripping into the priest in a tone of voice that booked no argument.

"Priest, once again you overstep yourself and now you try my patience. The next time you presume to destroy a crime scene before MY men have finished with it, you will find yourself in a cell for interfering in TALON business."

"Two, it is not for you to decide who shall be the spiritual leader to the Fleet, it is MINE! And as an Imperial battle priest of Tharon, I know you do not doubt my qualifications."

"And three, if the rumors I hear of you crying poverty due to the formation of the Fleet continue, I will place you under arrest. The funds for the Fleet came from the Talon budget, not yours. If your funds were cut, you can look to other sources. "

The Commander's face is cold hard and resolute.

"I do not care what your agenda is, nor what you are seeking to accomplish. But if you wish a war with me and the Talon, rest assured you will lose. Keep involving yourself in my business, you will find yourself either packed back to the Capitol in disgrace or in a cell. You may be a representative of your Church, I however am the arm of the Emperor. Learn the distinction."
" But, being this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya punk? - Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood)

Zadrithurn stood at Father Minuvas' side, arms folded and eyes locked on the body as the priest spoke to the masses. He showed no sign of vitality save for the flick of his hand to order two fledgling Exemplar to lead the procession that took the body away from the crowd. As the crowd cheered at the Father's jests and exclamations, he leaned over, muttering a few orders to his runner. The young soldier turned on his heal with a click and ran off towards Cear just as Minuvas bound off into the hills impressively. As the voices began to settle and the crowd divided itself between the ecstatic and the shocked, the Lieutenant straightened, pounded one fist to his chest and bellowed out, "Death before Dishonor, Praise Lochwar!"

With that he turned the direction of Thralls Gate and strode off, two Exemplar in tow. Passing the Commodore, he dropped a heavy gauntlet on his shoulder and gave him a reassuring nod.

Mixing in with the commoners and adventurers hailing from inside the
gates leading to North Cear, Faen sat under a nearby tree, using the
shadows provided to her advantage. At her feet a tiny black spider sat
with multi-colored green spots on its back. A bit of silent communcation
seemed evident between the sorceress and familiar, and the spider began
to rush towards the gates leading to the Trades and Commons.

He takes the law into his own hands, Faen thinks to herself. It isn't
as though I haven't done the same myself, given the right
circumstances. But bending the laws are far different than breaking them
outright.

She sighed quietly. I hope Fuzzy makes it to Draco in time. He will
need to be apprised of this.
A smile flicked across her lips, Who do
you follow? Your Master, or the law?

Even as she asked, a tight, icy feeling gripped the back of her mind. To
her, the answer was obvious: you follow both, any way you are allowed.

Nicholas, although not officially assigned the task, remained positioned on a rugged hill about fifty feet from the tree. After cutting down a runaway slave charged with murder, he set his eyes on the scene. Showing no emotion as he did so, he sketched it roughly in a blue book that all too often was opened in his line of work. Spotting a dark clothed figure snaking away from the scene, he flinched, almost ready to pursue, as a predator would chase its prey. However, his stomach rolled over as the sight recalled another in the farthest corner of his mind, and his feet remained planted to the spot. He did, however, record the incident.

The newly promoted Corporal looked far north, observing the speck that was Thrall's Gate. It appeared at this distance that nothing unusual was occurring there, but Nicholas knew his observations could not be trusted at such a length. He wished only to remain at this spot, and to continue observing, but with the recent rally the Lochwarian priest had caused, he knew it would be foolish not to check up on the encampment.

He approached the Commodore, saluting as he came within five metres..

"Commodore, I request permission to check in at Thrall's Gate, and report back, if necessary."

*looks up at the Commander, his resolve unshaken by his anger*

"Destroying the crime scene? I merely took the body and have placed it away. One of the servants of the Church of Lochwar has been slain by heretics - and you come here to scold me ?

Have some tea Commander. Your words are harsh, and for whatever reason you come to the house of the Lord of God's with anger and accusations against his own followers.

I have made no attempt to place spiritual leadership in your Fleet, your own Commodore invited me to give a sermon to his men."

Minuvas seems calm and relaxed in the face of the commander, who looks to have let anger get the best of him.

"Now let us talk about this as Civilized Varanites. I am sure the Talon does not wish to come into the Church of Lochwar after the death of one its own men, and then threaten to thrown its own followers into the Gaols?

I know for fact that you are a far better man than to presume rumors or allegations against anyone to be true without investigation."

Minuvas motions to the seat in front of him. "Now than I am sure you understand between your men's audit, and now having to suddenly prepare for a funeral we are at all ends busy tonight. I welcome you to stay, and as always you are welcome to browse the files of this Church. I have already give your men and the Fleet full access to the body, to which is properly being taken care of us as we speak.

We will not interfere, and attempt to assist in this investigation fully. This is a murder of one our own, our brothers. Above all, this Church is more interested in finding the criminal than anyone else commander. We would wish never to impede this any further.

I am quite put off you would ever think this Church wishes to pit itself against the Talon. These are the words of anger commander, you know rationally that we are on the same side here"

Minuvas smiled, as one of the Neophytes brings in the glass of tea "Come than drink. We are more reasonable men than this"

"I am already in the process of obtaining this man's personal information from his dispatched Priest Executioner and will have that to you shortly"

Commander Allers slams his hand on the priest's desk.

"Do you think I am so stupid , priest? Do you think my men do not report to me? Do you honestly think the words you preach in the streets do not reach my ears? I have heard numerous reports of what you preach on the streets. So if you wish to play games, I suggest you play them elsewhere."

"You have already interfered time and time again and this is your last warning. Next time, you will be jailed. You are not an Inquistor, nor are you a Bishop, you are a parish priest, and you are overstepping yourself. You will not remove bodies from a crime scene until my men give you leave to. You will not incite people into committing vigilante justice. Continue to do so and you will be reprimanded. And never presume to dismiss me. You and your men are not the law here."

The Commander is obviously not backing down as he stares down Minuvas. His own officers flank him, no expression on their faces.

"I am telling you now Minuvas, time and time again you have taken on authority that is not yours. It stops here and now or I will have you jailed for treason against the Empire. And don't think I cannot do it. Now you owe me, my men and Commodore Torquil an apology for your actions. You will cease in your attempts to undermine the Fleet and therefore the Talon. Failure to comply will result in your own incarceration."

In secret, a self-righteous warrior kneels before the wall to make peace with what he has done.

"Fiery Father, I beg repentance for my acts, righteous though they may be. Even if for the cleansing of this land, I have killed a man--slain him on a peaceful walk between villages. I cut him down with my blade, and left it under his body, as it is no longer fit to do Your work. It is sullied, as are my hands--but I pray you make them clean again, that I may continue to purge this corrupt world for the sake of you and the rest of your brethren that the Tyrant god have wronged. That I may topple him from his very throne of power, and that the rightful King may ascend to it. That Varana may die...so the Three may reign again."

He looks up, and seeming satisfied, he smiles to himself.
