Re: Real Life Picture Post
Baby Break... The Intrepid steams past the Blackheart residence (South), on it's way back to pier 86 after refitting. First shot is just being occulted by Governor's Island, the second it's passing behind the Staten Island Ferry terminal at the edge of Manhattan with Jersey City in the background. Unfortunately I was on the phone between these two photos when it passed into the open water between the two, where I woulda had a clear shot of the carrier in front of the statue of liberty.

Lobster bake, Blackheart style.

Gotta love Halloween.
Can you tell its striper season? About 30 fishermen crowding up the beach and rocks.

Re: Real Life Picture Post
I took the family seal stalking this Sunday. We've been living by the seaside for several years now, but we've never really seen them before; They only visit us in the dead of winter, as it's otherwise too warm, the tide needs to be out and conditions need to be calm for them to bother sunning themselves, so it was a bit of a trick to make this happen this particular weekend.
We looked on Saturday, but it was far too windy and rough, but we finally caught them out at about 5pm Sunday, just as the sun was starting to set. It was surprisingly calm in the sound, given what was a fairly large swell on the ocean side. Since it was just before dark, it made the mile-long trek back through the dark woods with a 23-pound child in a baby-backpack a little interesting. Nonetheless, but we finally got 'em! I rescaled these so it wouldn't be so punishing to download at 4000 by whatever pixels, so you're welcome (unfortunately that means there isn't a higher-resolution photo to click through to, in case you're really interested in feathers).
Here is a family of Turkeys we ran into along the way. They're more shiny and iridescent-feathered than I'd noticed seeing these things from as close to they'll let me get on foot, but you can really see it in the telephoto shot. Check out the little tuft of long feathers on this guy's chest.

I've skipped my trail shots (not that interesting), but we as we cut down the final corner of the trail into the beach ecology, expecting to see nothing, I heard a distinct grunt! We cleared the top of the dune, and we did we see? Seals! I think we identified harbor, grey, harp, and ringed seals, but did not see any hooded seals, though honestly I can't tell one from another, now that I'm not staring at the information on our trailmap.

There's more, but basking seals down really move that much, so...
