Prologue
The dagger penetrated deep into Obsidian’s cold black heart, cracking ribs and ripping his insides and finally with another thrust coming out the other side pinning him to the bed. Wide eyed Obsidian gasped his final breath as blood bubbled out of his mouth. His body only slightly trembled now, his grip around Shasta’s neck loosed his hands dropped. The struggle had been quick. Picking herself up off the bed Shasta rasped, “Now who got done?” slowly she walked over to the rags that had been her clothes before Obsidian had ripped them off her. She fell to her knees and began to cry. Time passed her by without her caring. She had been desecrated by a man she had always held high.
A knock was heard at the door. “Sir, 6: oo am time for the rounds.”
Shasta stood and glided behind the door as it opened. Looking through a crack in the door she looked at the man who entered. Marcus, Obsidian’s first commander. He was tall and muscular, he wore a hard boiled leather jacket with metal studs that protruded from the shoulder, he carried a club at his side and small shield on his back. Leather skirt with metal plating covered his loins and metal grieves on his legs.
He just stood there looking at the bloody mess on the bed that use to be Shasta’s father. Marcus’s hand moved slowly to his club. He was a young man who Shasta had been in love with since she had first seen him and now she was going to have to kill him. He turned now with club in hand to the door and moved slowly towards it.
“I know you’re in here,” he said “come out now!”
He walked slowly towards the door. “Almost,” she whispered, “almost...” She whipped the door closed clashing with Marcus’s head knocking him back. She leaped past Marcus onto the bed and wrenched the knife from her father’s chest. Marcus was bleeding from the eye after the door had taken him in the face; he swung wildly smashing the body of his captain and the bed. Shasta sprung from the bed taking the Marcus in his stomach. Her hand reached up grabbing his shoulder she pulled him onto her dagger pushing it through his armour.
He dropped his club and looked down at the naked figure of his captain’s daughter. Marcus had always loved her starting from the moment he had seen her but he had known that his captain would not have approved. “Shasta?” the last words he spoke before he dropped to the floor and closed his eyes for the last time.
The two men Shasta had loved now lay dead on the floor by her hand, yells where heard from down the hall way. Wrenching the dagger from Marcus’s chest she ran and leapt out of the window and plummeted towards the alleyway below, landing on her leg which snapped at a right angle. She screamed loud and long but knowing she couldn’t stay there or she would die she hobbled out of the alleyway, across the street and to the nearest house. She fell against the door. As she slipped form conscience the door opened and their stood a man dressed in armour.

Re: Prolgue and tales of Shasta 'n' Co
Three weeks earlier
Everybody was dancing and having a good time. Shasta’s sixteenth birthday was in full swing. But Shasta had never been a good dancer. Her father had tried to instruct her in how to be a gentlemen’s daughter but she could never meet his expectations. She was always too rigid, or to relaxed, not poised enough, to fast, or to slow. It seemed her life was destined to be a parade of her brother’s successions and her failures, every family had to have a failure.
The Diastis across the road kept their youngest son locked in the cellar afraid that his deformed looks would taint the families’ reputation of good looks and fashion. The Mandres kept their eldest daughter in the shop and insist she is only a second cousin that is visiting for a time. Her downfall is an accident at birth that crippled her brain. Shasta on the other hand had not missed out on beauty; in fact she was quite beautiful. Nor had she been refused a fully functioning brain.
Her curse was worst of all. Her birth had killed her mother. It had been a curse in the BineShade family for years brought down upon them from a witch from the east. The curse entailed that their offspring would be the downfall of the family. And ever since has the BineShades climb to power been disrupted by a child of the same blood.
When her brother was borne the curse was said to be lifted. He quickly rose in the ranks of the city guard to take a small government roll. Her father wished to celebrate such an achievement and it was during these celebrations that Shasta was conceived. She was bourn five months later and her mother died during the birth due to complications. Her fathers’ first words were that she was his littlest mistake ever. It would become her nickname.
She was premature and so she was always the smallest while growing up. Her father always seemed to be pushing her waiting for her to crack, which she did more often then not. Her maid Mantilla was her only friend. But tho her father hated her so she loved him with all her innocent little heart.
The boy approached her. Sweat beads lined Shasta’s forehead. “Do not ask me to dance,” she whispered in Jarels’ direction. The boy stopped quite surprised that his attempted to ask her to dance had been foiled so quickly. See Shasta had been watching him for some time. He had stood three times already intending to ask her but had returned to his seat and to the jeers of his friends. The boy slumped his head in defeat and returned to his seat.
Shasta gasped for air. She hadn’t realized she had been holding it the whole time Jarel had made his advance across the dance floor. She removed her hidden handkerchief from her almost exposed cleaverage and began to wipe her forehead. The dress her father had made her wear made her feel ridiculously exposed.
A shadow passed over her and she held her breath once more. All her eyes could concentrate on was this shadow on her. The shape of a man in pure blackness, She fainted. she didnt know what else there was to do.
Darkness.
