Inside the Shadows...

Post by Vahene »

Author's Note: I'm blaming PvtZombi for this, because ever since he made a comment to me about the planes being thin right now... and had I thought about bring a certain character's child to Cear, I've not been able to get this out of my head. I haven't made a decision on actually doing an application for this character yet. I'm almost half sure that the DM's would run screaming in terror if I tried. But, comments, public or private, would be welcome either way.

For those that are unaware, there is currently a rift centered in the village of Daris. It is drawing the Plane of Shadows into our realm. That is the premise for this short snippet. It might or might not be continued, based on comments.

And although Stormknife no longer plays, I know he probably visits the boards occasionally - and Haxley belongs to him. He's welcome to add, if he wishes to. ;) Everyone else is mine.

- - -

"No."

"But grandma--"

"No, and that's my final word on the subject. We are not investigating that rift."

The snow crunched against my feet, and I inwardly suppressed a sigh. My cousin, Vana, was determined to draw my grandmother into a confrontation. That was never a good idea, not even at the best of times. Vana was the daughter of Ish, who had been half-named for one of my grandfather's favorite dieties. Both mother and daughter took after their grandmother, headstrong, stubborn, sanity slightly questioned, and powerful. Sorcerers.

Thank Ki that I took after grandfather and not those nit-wits. I actually thought things through. Which is why I started to move away as Vana continued to pester my grandmother about that rift that appeared just the other day.

My grandfather and I exchanged a look. As we passed one another, he palmed a dagger into my hands. I hid.

As expected, my grandmother lashed out, delivering a mild but painful spell to my cousin. Shockwaves of electricity sent my cousin flailing to the ground comedically. She appeared as if she was swimming in the snow.

I hid a giggle and a grin, the latter only once my grandfather glared at me.

"Anyone else questioning my better judgment?" My grandmother asked.

"Sure," my grandfather replied.

My grandmother's eyes narrowed. I could see her contemplating. She knew she could never permanently hurt her husband, even though from what I understood, the other way around wasn't as promising. My grandfather could, would, and had hurt her permanently on more than one occasion. Well, okay, he had never killed her or anything like that - there was always a cleric nearby to assist if he did - but throttling her had been tempting on more than one occasion. And although I loved my grandmother, I understood my grandfather's aggravation. She was a real pain sometimes.

It wasn't his decision to be trapped on the Plane of Shadows to begin with. That was my grandmother's fault. She kept too many secrets, and it nearly got the both of them sent to Nergal. They became unwilling planar adventurers instead, after filling up a book that my grandmother kept hidden. To her credit, she didn't exactly know at first that the book was cursed. By the time she figured it out, it was almost full and she had done several, unmentionable things to the authorities in Daris. She tried to kill the Redboot Captain, and did kill another Redboot. Someone named Dante.

Grandfather had been extremely upset about that when he heard, or so my father, Ash, told me. Not as upset as when he heard about the invasion of Daris by the Varanians, but pretty close.

My grandfather moved around to my grandmother's other side. She couldn't see him without magical help. Even then, she could just barely detect him. He had two daggers out. Her eyes looked wild again. I inwardly sighed. That wasn't a good sign. She was slipping into the past again. As she aged, the psychosis increased. Daddy called it dementia. But she had her fits. They came and went. She would think my grandfather was someone named "Kell". That usually sent him into a rage of his own, which was always quietly controlled. The quieter my grandfather was, the angrier.

"Haxley..." my grandmother warned.

My grandfather stopped and appeared, nearby, leaning against a pile of snow. "Yes?"

"Don't make me hurt you."

"You're welcome to try."

Try was the correct word. Grandfather, despite his age, was pretty fast with those daggers of his. He had started to teach me, but I wasn't nearly as talented. Not yet, I promised silently, not yet.

The two squared off against one another, and as the power started to gather in my grandmother's hands, my grandfather disappeared. My grandmother screamed in frustration. I had to put a hand over my mouth.

This time, I did giggle.

OOC: Probably a few months in the past, yes. Considering, the rift isn't new anymore - but a few months ago it was. :)

That had been sixteen years ago, just before my seventh birthday. In that time, a lot had changed.

When I turned twenty, Aunt Ish met with an accident with a shadow mastiff - an interrupted spell wildly backfiring. My cousin, Vana, had been inconsolable and perished trying to find that same mastiff. The gnawing on her bones indicated she probably had been successful.

When I turned sixteen, I met a strange human, who disappeared after I barely heard the first few syllables of his name.

When I turned fourteen, my grandmother died.

But none of that mattered.

I stopped caring about little else after my seventh birthday. That was the day my grandfather disappeared. I still don't know what happened. No one would tell me. All that had been left behind was a dagger. My grandmother gave it to me. It was plain - no ornamentation or enchantment. I tucked it in my belt and it had stayed there ever since.

I think that my grandmother made it pretty long without him, but ultimately, after seven years, she gave in to her sickness. My daddy tried to tell me that it was her time - that she was old. But she was my grandmother. Vana told me that grandfather finally poisoned her, to put her out of her misery.

I slammed my fist into her face.

Her words did serve a purpose though, other than severely irritating me. Something in me died that day. Something in me realized what my grandfather had been trying to teach me all of these years – that someday, I would only have myself to depend on.

I trained hard. I managed to steal some books on magic, and after a few attempts, I could light the tip of my finger longer than a couple of seconds. And when a few of daddy’s short swords went missing, he didn’t say a word. I found a cleaning kit on my bedroll that night.

All of that work came in handy the day that Imogene came into my life.

Boy, was she a piece of work.

But I had a lot to thank her for. If it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Figuratively and literally. I stand taller, knowing that I finally managed something that my grandmother failed to do in her lengthy life.

I killed a Shadowmage.

More importantly, I killed the Shadowmage that stupidly miscast a spell, bringing me back to the land of my grandparents birth. Instead of a shadow fiend, she got me.

Boy, wasn’t she surprised?

Re: Inside the Shadows...

The first thing that entered my mind was pain. One moment I was about to help a group of otherwise stranded persons, such as myself, battle a mass of shadows advancing on our campsite, and another, I was face down in plush grass. Every bone in my body felt as if it had been snapped against the ground all at once – and as far as I knew about magic, that’s what could have happened. My knowledge was mostly limited to making my finger glow and sending weak little bursts of fire towards enemies in order to make a hasty escape.

I heard a voice muttering in what I recognized to be Varanian. Silently I thanked my grandmother’s paranoia – and my mother’s insistence that I learn multiple languages.

“Oh, this isn’t right. This isn’t what should have happened at all!”

With considerable effort, I lifted my head.

Standing above me, wringing her hands, was a mage swaddled in dark colors. I could taste the power around her, and it nearly made me hurl. Darkness, like the Shadow Plane I had just been taken from, surrounded her. It was an acquired taste, to be part of something so dark for most of your life, but with devotions to Ishtar, I managed to not succumb to the temptations it offered. What I wanted to know, more importantly, was why was I here? And where, precisely here was.

“Who are you?” The mage asked, poking the top of a quarterstaff into my upper back.

I had the urge to break the wooden pole over my knee. Remembering the little my grandfather managed to teach me, I gave a one word answer. “Mera.”

True names were dangerous – and this one would suffice for the moment.

“Where did you come from? I didn’t summon another sailor from Cuhanna, did I?”

I blinked. From where?

“Name?” I asked her.

The mage blushed. “Oh, I’m Imogene. I’m a Shadowmage. I’m sorry about all of this. I’ll send you back. Just hold still…”

“Wait,” I interrupted. “Where am I?”

Imogene paused. “Where are you?”

“That is what I asked, yes.”

“You’re in Ravenswatch.”

My mind spun. Ravenswatch was in Dasaria – or what used to be Dasaria before the Varanites took it over. I had to remember that. I had to find a library as soon as possible – wait, I couldn’t stay here. What about daddy and the others?

“Well, just outside of Ravenswatch actually. Okay, technically, you’re outside of Cear.”

“Those are two different places,” I said.

Imogene blushed a deeper shade of pink. “Well, yes. I told my Mistress that I could summon something from the Shadow Plane, but she wouldn’t let me try. Said I wasn’t ready.”

I silently agreed with her Mistress’ conclusion.

“Well,” the mage continued, “I decided to do it anyway, so I went to this little clearing, just outside of the city gates. It’s near enough to Ravenswatch, I suppose. It’s on the way there. Anyway, I don’t know how you came out of the Shadow Plane instead. What were you doing there anyway?”

“I don’t remember,” I lied.

Imogene looked horrified. “I took away your memory! Oh, I’m so sorry, that’s horrible!”

She turned away, and I smirked.

“I’ll bring you to the Ministry – the Magnus will know what to— or the Claw--“

I palmed my dagger, and as soon as she said the word ‘Claw’, I shoved it into her back.

Time on the Shadow Plane isn’t good for much, unless you have Dasarians for relatives. Dasarians more than willing to tell stories of the fights against Varana. I knew what Claw were, and I wasn’t about to be sent to one against my will. I didn’t pay attention to most of the magic that my relatives did, but I knew that I didn’t have a hope in the hells of being returned to the Plane of Shadows if this incompetent nincompoop was any indication.

The mage fell, and tried to gather power in her hands.

She turned it towards me. I dodged.

It singed a nearby tree.

I took my dagger back and waited, cleaning it off against the grass as I kept staring at her body. Eventually she took one last breath, and died. I put the dagger back into my belt.

Hot tears threatened to spill against my cheeks. I would never see my family again. No, I promised myself, I would. If magic got me here, then I would study all I could to ensure that it brought me back to where I came from. Somehow, somewhere, there had to be a spell to help. Cear – she mentioned I was near Cear. Grandmother said they had a library. I could start my search there.

End. Comments welcome.

OOC: I like it. You draw an interesting picture of the protagonist as well as her family. Also this makes a good (although painful) comparison to my own scribbles, as reading this I notice a whole bunch of things I might have done differently. :)

To make an attempt at constructive criticism, I think sometimes you should have described a little more about the people and places, and I would have liked the story to develop at a slower pace. Then again, it's easy to get carried away there and make the story a heavy read.

You managed to surprise me as reader, which is a thing I like and it makes me want to read further to see how things turn out. You know how annoying it is if you read a book or watch a movie and you can guess correctly what is eventually going to happen after going through the first 10 pages/minutes?

So all in all, good work.

Seems more like she's trying to imitate the way I wrote when I posted Haxley stories back in Das1.

Huh. I guess I am. Didn't even realize I was doing that. I think that means we've known each other too long. :)

I was more going for 1st person POV, stream of consciousness. But thank you both for the comments.
