Crafting Mithril Shields

Post by Thralik »

I was speaking yesterday to one of the few expert crafters still left in Dasaria and was told that enchantments cannot be added to Mithril Shields, eg to make them +3. Is this true and why is this? Enchantments can be added to Mithril armour so why should shields be different?

You cannot enchant Mithril shields with anything. Apparently the -Arcane Spell failure and weight reduction both count as your enchantments.

Is that hard coded from NWN2? Why is mithril armour different - it also has weight reduction and - arcane failure.

In the NWN2 campaign when crafting from what Ive read its not supposed to use up any of the enchantment slots (There are 3 in the OC) In Das though Im not sure how they made the system.

I can confirm that Mithril shields can't be further enchanted. This must be a new issue, since I have a number of mithril shields from a year ago that Amnon enchanted just fine. The weight reduction and ASF were not on those older shields. I think these properties must be new (i.e., added by Das admin or by NWN2 engine).

It should be noted that with the material identification scripting functions in the upcoming 1.23, it will be possible to overcome this obstacle (ie allow a higher max of enchantments for materials like mithral or adamantine).

Whether to do this at all and how to do this, is, of course, up to the staff.

Is it possible to make mithral shields which yield 0% arcane failure??

That should be the default for a mithril light shield. All others will end up with some spell failure as what mithril does is subtract 10% of a armor's spell failure rate.

A mithral heavy shield has 5% ASF; Most arcane spells have some kind of somatic component (but not all). The Still Spell feat is another way to go if you want to arcane cast w/o risking ASF.

As a caster who wears a mithral chain shirt, the 10% spell failure isn't that bad in reality. It's annoying when you roll it multiple times in a row, but at the same time, I've gone hours without once getting hit by the spell failure.

The trick is to remember not to wear the armor that gives spell failure when buffing. During combat, if one spell failure makes the difference between victory and defeat, well, you were doing something wrong from the get go.

Might be a good idea to memorize Still versions of any high-level spell you just can't do without in combat. ANd the removal of mithral while buffing is always a smart way to go.

Besides the RP aspect, what was your reason for having a Mithril shield if they didn't have ASF and weight reduction?
Just curious.

wait - I thought mithril shields had 0% spell failure - has this changed?

If it has, a caster would be better off using a light shield (which is what my warlock uses)

All shields have a small amount of spell failure. All mithral does is lower it by 10%. So using a mithral light shield has no spell failure while a regular lightshield has a bit (5% if I remember right). If you don't mind that 5% from your light shield, then a mithral heavy shield could be helpful to you, as it should lower the spellfailure to 5% as well.
