Koobface.

Post by Redleafe »

Well I apparently contracted a worm known as "Koobface" and it is severely mucking with my comp. It paused me while ingame just moments ago while I was playing with robertharris and lankycheese. Every so often a window will pop up telling me to type in two separate words within a 3:00 minute time period or it will shut down, which is entirely BS because I let the timer run off.

Its somehow connected to social network sites like Faceboo, MYSPACE, Twitter, etc...

Needless to say I need to get this figured out, I may be out of commission for a few days

Here is a link describing it. I'm super pissed.

Ouch that bites.

Here's a page that details how to manually get rid of it. I suggest only playing around in the registry if you're comfortable with such things. If you delete something you shouldn't you can make your computer un-bootable.

Instead you could try downloading Spy Bot Search and Destroy and then proceed to do a scan in safe mode. The scan must be done in safe mode to disable most of the components of the virus which actively re-installs itself.

I also found this removal tool, but I usually don't touch such things. It's better to stick with trusted virus and spy-ware removal tools.

I'm shamelessly in the best sense of the word a tool when it comes to the technical side of computers, sadly. I don't really want to do anything more to risk more trouble. This has come at the worst time from a gaming standpoint. Falcon, I do not know what I'm going to do as far as the C.E.A.R. is concerned tommorrow? The best I could do is have Roser look at it....Sunday?

This blows.

If only I could fly to your house and take a look. Why hasn't my teleportation device been invented yet. :(

Avast.com - Nails any virus to the wall that I've seen

Spybot - Search and Destroy

Get these two programs. I've found that with these two, I can handle nearly anything. I don't know about any other programs, but I've tried Norton and McAffee and I've found them to be HIGHLY unreliable.

Webroot is also good as far as antivirus and spyware goes.

Norton's and McAwful are .. just .. terrible.

No need to miss tonight. Do what Elrith said. It will work. Just make sure you update Spybot after installing it.

In case you didn't know, to get into safe mode with windows you'll need to push the F8 key before your computer starts loading windows but after it does the preliminary BIOS post check screen. The timing can be a bit tricky, but a menu should pop with various options like "Load last known good configuration". The one you want is just regular safe mode.
