A fresh idea!

Post by thedork »

Please read before voting on the poll:

Well I have an idea that I have been thinking about for a while (among other things), which fits in the category of possibility enhancing Dasaria... while I have an intermediate level with design and scripting, I am not sure how *possible* it would be, or how supported the idea is in the first place.

The problem some present: Meanwhile it's definitely not large enough for the builders to wast their time with, theres been people saying "where's the real RP at?", so....

Heres the idea:

A back room in Roggin's bar, that opens during a certain hour (eg. 7-8pm weekdays) - which will be an official "RP time" during that time. That way the newbies and oldies alike will know where the RP is, and if there is enough support, you can assume that during the time there will be a *DEFINITE* RP hour going on, and would save people logging on solely to wander around talking to people to only have them walk away without a word, when looking for RP.

So... tell me your thoughts :) If you all like the idea I will do my best to script/design it, and then submit it to the GM/designers for thought.

NB: the problem that might occur is not being able to script it to occur at RL time, but that can be changed to having it occur at a certain game time, or make do in another way.

It can't hurt. Especially if the room is very well designed...ie...lots of couches, chairs, tables, drinks, nice lighting, a few fireplaces, good music...like a tavern but more welcoming. Does sound like it has potential.

There was something similar to this at my old NWN 1 server. Every saturday at 2pm everyone would gather at the Forest Grove and tell stories, read poetry, talk, and laugh. It was called story night and it was very successful. Lots of good memories, lots of laughs. This idea reminds me of that, and maybe with a little thought it could be successful.

Should this even be necessary? I would prefer the opposite: A little time set aside for grinding, with an emphasis on RP. :?

I would say... neea-possibly. Just because alot of characters don't associate with others, known criminals and the watch. Knights of good and necromancers.

Eh. I'd suggest just starting up a RP hour where alot of people just try and RP wherever they are. More so than usual to invite non RPers and people who aren't in a clique to join in.

There needs to be a place and there needs to be something to do for it to be successful. Just like in real life a party has to have a place and it has to have music, refreshments, and activities for it to be a good party. If not, no one will show up. Its the same scenario with NWN, since its an online game and there are many people playing/participating. I think a really nice area could either a beautiful grove, or a glamorously decorated room or tavern with lots of drinks and maybe a stage for bards/performers would work out well.

True True. But you wouldn't invite two people who hate one another to the same party. Because you know they will cause trouble. Anyway, I'm going to wait until the DM client is working before saying that there isn't enough RP going on.

Maybe you could just make a room in the inn that could be used for gatherings with the chairs and couches and such. Then people could set real life times to meet with friends there and RP. Just make the room off to the side with no NPC quests there, only PCs allowed. I have seen this work in other PWs. Some PC might even volunteer to be the host and sublet the room from the Barkeep.

Ideally you are roleplaying whenever you want to to begin with. Setting aside a specific time isn't really going to change that. I find the most compelling roleplaying occurs out in the field anyway amongst the action.

Stay in character, be your character, set an example, and more and more people will follow suit. Now if you want to schecule a performance or a drinking contest or other such stuff and various times that should be greatly encouraged.

But roleplay all fo the time, it doesnt always need to be heavy-duty but even a little quip as you smash a goblins brain in can do a lot to maintain the illusion.
I'm always right. I'm also a jerk. It's not my fault you can't get over the latter to see the former.

Hurray for Me!

Topic titles are like turn signals. They aren't for your benefit, but for the people around you.

Yea personally I think it would best serve that people go out and role play not everyone gather in one spot. That being said however there is a Caer/Das2 Roleplay Inn already listed in the Roleplay (Non-PW) section that if you wanted to try it out would work wonderfully for.

I mean that way if it's just going to be a social gathering it's not like you'll need all your equipment or levels and you could all gather there. Giving others who want to quest and such a chance to go out while you are having your inn party :)

To be honest, I don't see why this wouldn't be a good idea. Wheter you rp during or not the rp hours, wherever you are, that would be your own choice. I didn't see many people rping (including me) because there weren't many examples of how to do it... besides, such meetings could motivate those who are eager to learn to actually do something. It might also persuade those who only want to silent run to try it out.

Well I like the idea of 'RP hour', but I'm thinking we need to have a reason for characters to flock to a room together. Perhaps if RP hour consisted of some kind of posted event. That way we could gather for an in character reason and have something to do once we're together.

I'm thinking of some kind of tournament even though, so that we can draw some of the powergamer crowd into RPing. After all, it never hurts to make friends, even if it starts in a virtual fighting pit o.o;

I'm all for the rp in all its forms and this is just a thought on the flip side, but the devs put a hell of a lot of time into the world to make it an involving evolving place, to take a single room and jump in there to chatter, to me at least, does seem to take something away from it.
Get in to the world, get out on the quests and chatter the whole day through. If you want an RP hour go quest for an hour every day at a certain time. If you want more to be there create a post saying where and when:

*pinned to the inn door*

I've got the hump with blah, need group, loot to be had. meet here next eve at blah blah.

..done.

As has been said, events and contests have always been great and have involved the whole server and DMs and been a blast.
I don't feel any shame, I won't apologise

Urgh.. no thanks.. Tournaments just bring out the worst sorts..
only a few builds are viable and everyone else just ends up feeling somewhat useless.
