While I understand that the original post had a patrotic tone (that I, for one, do sympathize with, and support), perhaps this thread should be locked to prevent a sensitive discussion from going further out of control?

I don't think this thread should be locked. I think that minds should be opened.

Apparantly there's a need to talk about this. Some people are saying that it -should- be discussed, lest we forget. Others simply think they must place a post so that the rest of the world may understand and remember too what horrors are going on in the world. And I think both those things are okay because heh.. We shouldn't forget and yes there -are- still a lot of shitty things going on that we have no clue about.

This day doesn't mean the same to us Europeans and other Worldians as what it means to you New Yorkers and Americans. Of course it doesn't. Does anybody of you still remember the flood that killed so many in 1953 in Holland? More important; do you care? Probably not. Why not? Because it's not in your own backyard.

And that's -okay-. Because our own pains are always the pains that hurt most. That's where understanding and empathy comes into play.

Salt in wounds is never a good thing, heh. But unfortunately, salt gets spilled sometimes. And it's not fun to have salt all over your skirt but neither is it fun to find out that your clumsiness has just spoiled a wonderful new dress.. Please, have a little patience for the sake of humanity.

If anything we should open our arms to hear people's opinions and perhaps experiences. Because it would only lead us to a bigger, broader understanding.

Well, i might live in Germany but my cousin lives in NY and worked about 2 blocks away from the WTC at that time. I have talked to her about this so think i have at least an idea how people felt there and still feel about it. Nobody is saying you should forget that day and remember those who have died. Nobody should forget that day.

The people that died that day were innocent. As innocent as most of those that died in the coming war. Nobody must think that they feel more pain or suffer more. Never think that your children cry more when their parents are killed by somebody they have never done any harm. Never think that you are innocent and the others are guilty. The truth is always somewhere in between. You might not undestand the others. But the same is true for them. They see how your soldiers kill their parents, children, friends. How your bombs destroy their houses. How do you think they feel about you? Never think that you are better than they are.

As i have written before: replace a few words in the original post and what you get is the same propagande that Bin Laden would use. And from his point of view he would be as right as you think that you are right.

Remeber 9/11. It is a day that must not be forgotten. But also try thinking about why there are people out there that hate you that much to commit such a crime.
