Slowdive, a member of the NWN2 Community, has got it in his head to create an OPEN RPG toolkit from scratch; a toolkit which is freely available on github.
As a player of NWN2 you're probably aware that there's a lot of games out there, but virtually none that ship with a toolkit so you can create your own world anymore. There is still the ability to do customization/modding in some games (e.g., Skyrim), but not to walk the Road Less Traveled. It seems the future of commercial games is single-player modding or WoW-only for you. Sadly, NWN2 may have been the last game to ship with a toolkit to allow you to do something on the scale of a Persistent World like Dasaria.
In addition to creating, and providing this toolkit to the community, Slowdive has started a kickstarter project called Solentarr -- Solenttar is a story and party-based computer RPG set in an unique world called Chronicles of Charnia using the openForgeRPG engine.
I'd like to encourage all Dasarians to check out Slowdive's project out for themselves, and/or spreading these links to others who might interested in, and able to contribute to his kickstarter.
I think this is a pretty cool thing and an area of the gaming world that "big gaming" has abandoned in favor of "elephant hunting." Increasingly, gaming distributors are behaving more and more like movie distributors, and only the potential giant hits/flops and sequels of those can seem to get financing anymore. Often multi-player, and usually customization fall by the wayside in merciless development cycles intended to exploit the latest hardware. The challengers to WoW fill a graveyard of failed commercial enterprises, and publishers have given up.
Anyway, I have not played the game, am not personally endorsing it, but this is a sound idea that merits serious attention, and what he has been able to accomplish so far is quite extraordinary. I urge you to check it out.
