Bug with Bugbears?

I'm not quite sure how this worked as it was pretty late when we were adventuring but this is how I remember what happened...

Logged in and partied with two other people, one of them ran off for a bit. I looked at my chatbox and noticed it said I had gained 1000xp and I asked the person what they did. They said they just handed in the quest item to the captain for the bugbear quest. But the journals for me and the other person didn't change so we were both able to hand it in for another 2000xp. After that all three of our journals were blank again.

Normally when one person hands it in all journals update right?

p.s. I only handed in the quest item I had on me (from a pre-crash jaunt) to see if it would give us XP when it shouldn't have so I could report it...
