Looks like for now, if you want good performance on NwN2, you'll have to stick with Windows XP. But dang, those photos of DirectX 10 possibilities look nice.

Just think, soon we won't even have pixels anymore, we'll just have our virtual icons floating in front of us for us to pick out.

Anyone buying a DX.10 Card or Windows Vista -right now- has too much money to spend, in my opinion(unless of course this is a long due upgrade).

I'll be waiting for a year or two before I make my upgrade, considering I have a fairly new system. Not only to wait for price drops, but to wait for Radeon to jump in on the competition for DX.10 and for better hardware to come out, of course. It's probably going to be over a year before DX.10 even becomes the norm for games anyway, and well over two or three years before DX.9 is ruled out entirely.

Well DX10 games area meant to hit the market Q1 2007. The last report I read said MS will not release DX10 for XP, so if you want to play any new games you will eventually have to buy vista.

The rule of thumb is to only run vista on new hardware with no less than 1GB RAM.

If I recall correctly, DX 9 won't become obsolete for another 2-3 years.

DX9 life cycle will depend on the speed of Vista sales to home users. Considering XP was released what 4/5 years ago alot of people are due for a hardware upgrade.

Hardware advancements are also moving rather quickly for video cards. I think you'll see DX10 only games within 12 months and a faze out of DX9 with in 6 to 12 months after that.

Vista on it's own is hardly worth the money at the moment, since there are no DX10 games out. There's only one DX10 graphics card out at the moment, and it costs silly money. I definitely won't be buying nVidia again anyway, after the serious crashing issues I've been plagued with on my current card (7950GT). Waiting until the next-gen ATI cards are released seems more prudent, in my book, and also until the manufacturers have fully got to grips with the new technology.

In 6-12 months time, we will see some decent DX10 titles, cheaper, better DX10 cards, and hopefully a bit of a fall in the price of upgrading to vista. Until then, I'll be holding onto my precious pennies.

Same as Inz said, anyone who has enough money to shell out nearly $1000 on a graphics card and operating system, knowing that it won't allow them to do anything they couldn't already, has more money than sense.

Interesting article. I was just today tempted to buy Vista to see if there was any performance increase with DirectX 10 in a Direc X 9 game. On paper it sounds like there should. One thing that I noticed that I found odd was there test system, which is more powerful than mine, scored in the 10,000s on 3DMark06 @ 1280x1024 where as mine scores in the 13,000s. The relevant hardware from there test bed is:

I'm for thinking my rights as a PC owner are more important than DX10. I don't think I'll ever upgrade to Vista.
